When a brand new engine is started up for the very first time there will be some amount of blow by. It's inherent in the design of the piston and rings. This is why engines need a crankcase ventilation system and oil changes. Blow by is only a problem when it gets excessive and it begins to adversely affect the operation of the engine.
@johnniethepom7545
4 ай бұрын
A brand new engine should not have blow by . It only becomes blow when the engine is very worn . The oil breather is there to allow the slight rise in pressure that happens as an engine heats up to dissipate. As the engine cool air re-enters the through the engine breather . Oil fumes from a hot engine also vent from a hot engine through the breather pipe . EGR valves are prone to clogging up because the engine oil breather tube is fed into the iair induction system in order to burn off ( during the combustion cycle ) excess oil vapour . The oil vapour congeals in the EGR valve . All done for emissions .

You can also get crankcase pressure from worn valve stem guides. Usually from the exhaust valves. If the intake valve guides get worn they can leak turbo pressure out into the crankcase and oil into the cylinders.

Even on gasoline engines its the same thing. You have 2 compression rings and an oil ring. Each ring has a small gap from the factory as the engine ages and wears it gets wider and wider. Thats why its so important to change your oil regularly. Because even a brand new engine is going to have a slight amount of blowby. Which turns your oil acidic over time.

Blow by is normal past the ring, just not to an excessive amount. An older engine will have more blow by and it will start leaking gasses during all strokes. In both gasoline and diesel engines.

@bestavatar8986

@melvinhanson6389 simply if there is too much, then the engine will missfire one way or another. There will be too much of a loss of compression. There may even be a lot of exhausted smoke filling up in the crank case. It will exit out the oil fill cap.

Back in the late 1970's my dad still had a 1968 Australian Valiant with a 225 slant six he bought new. He used it everyday as a work car as well as being the family car. The original motor had to be pulled at 465,000 miles because of excessive blow by. Besides oil leaks, the oil dipstick itself would start lifting up out of the tube with increase of engine revs. Quite bizarre to watch. Fond memories of the old slant sixes.

A head gasket can't leak into the crank case, it will leak into the atmosphere, the coolant system,. If your head gasket is blown that bad, that it leaks into the oil channel that drains back into the oil pan, that cylinder won't even fire, there won't be any compression. The cylinder might push some air into the crank via the drain back valley, but that's not blow by, he's talking about spent gas (exhaust) leaking by the rings, that's blow by!

Wiggly ring make it easy for combustion pressure to leak BEHIND the ring. But no ring has zero wiggle so blowby always exists. There's a hurricane of oil mist in the crancase so the blowby pressure pushes mist out the breather and into the air cleaner then into the combustion chamber where it tries to burn during combustion but most of it exits the tailpipe as vaporized oil, aka oil steam. Blue "smoke", but really vaporized oil.

I have had several engines with huge blow by. On one gas engine the blow by would push the oil fill/ pcv air in filter cap all the way to the top of it's tube every couple hundred miles of continuous driving. It used very little oil and had plenty of power. I drove it everywhere. I retired it for a massive cubic inch engine. On another large gas engine that I drag raced at the local strips there was so much blow by that it would push oil out of that same oil fill/ breather cap, but it made enough power to push a 4,000 Lb car 12.25 ET @ 115 mph in 1/4 mile standing start. On a Diesel tractor my Dad had started on starting fluid and revved too high. Afterward it had no compression and would not start on the starter no matter how much starting fluid I sprayed it with. BUT I pull started it and it had plenty of power. But it had so much blow by the oil could not return to the oil pan. The blow by could only vent out of the rocker arm cover on top and it kept all the oil on top of the cylinder head until it starved the oil pick-up tube. That engine had broken it's compression ring lands on every piston yet it ran and made power. Just FYI something that happen to me.
