Been having this problem off and on. Instead of fixing it right, I chose to go with a higher amperage fuse, thinking it could get me by longer. Kept blowing fuses until all I had left was 20 Amp fuses. This is where I made a small problem worse. The 20 Amp fuse didn't blow, but it instead fried something. I believe it burned up an ignition relay. Buying the relay this morning. Hope it fixes it.

Holy bare wires mowman! Talk about a TOTAL crap design. Was about to pull out clutch to see if it needed replaced and BAM! 6 INCHES of bare wire. SUPER Easy fix. THANKS FOR THIS! Interesting though. There is a "built-in" diode in the mix? Um, ok. Its broke. Not sure what it does or how important. While i CAN repair the bare wires in ten minutes, my local dealer has this part number in stock for my Hustler Super Mini-Z 927285. Harness part number 791251. $27. I might as well do it right.

Thanks you may have just gave me the answer to my problem. I just replace the starter and after mowing half my 3 acre property and the clutch just stopped. I figured it was probably electrical and I remember thinking that wire is hanging down too much.

Had the same problem. pulled out this cable and found the bare wires. Had been rubbing on a pully. Not a good design. I don't understand why Hustler woulkd build the mower only to be let down by badly routed wirers? Fixed and rerouted the cable. All good now. Thankyou.

I wish mine was just some wires touching each other but it isn't. that was the problem with my new to me but old red craftsman i took its old clutch off cleaned it up good on top of it the two black wires were greasy dirty and the wires were touching each other on that clutch i cleaned that part separated the wires and the clutch works how it should then put it back on the shaft now have to hook a 42 inch deck up to it

On the craftsmen pto switch i had to cut 2 black wires from it they kept shutting the mower off when id pull the pto switch once i cut those it quit shutting off the mower and turns the clutch on and off Thats how this john deere sst18 w/48c should do but doesn't I'd like to to make this one a cable engagement instead of electrical

On my john deere sst18 the shitty 2013 Kohler courage sv725 doesn't go to the mower so i redone all the wiring the right way it needs a starter and i been trying to disengage the clutch whoever last had the mower left the clutch on and i need to spin the flywheel so i can clean the spray painted coils then brush off the painted flywheel. I have no battery hooked up yet i was trying to disengage the clutch with the battery charger it might be blowing the 20amp fuse then it might not be so after trying from the top i went to the bottom of the mower and unplugged the clutch wire toushed the red on the blue and black on black all that the clutch done was hummed but the belt is tight around it that might be why it only hummed instead of disengaging the belt maybe the engine had to be running for it to disengage I dont know yet im use to always using none electrical clutchs on mowers all my other mower don't use the electric clutch you just get on them push the lever up and start cutting none of this bullshit no blowing fuses with them but its got to be something sense the engine doesn't go to the mowers frame

whelp now I get to look at more wiring.......yay......after spend 5 hours today trying to figure out an issue on my dads mower that just stopped one day and was hard to spin the flywheel managed to get it started but now when I engage the PTO it blows the fuse, this might be my answer and if it is, I do roughly the same repair job until I can get a replacement cable...............................still need to replace a bearing though, damn it

@@Mike-su8si I found that the PTO was the problem. did a continuity test on the PTO and the meter was all over the place. Tested another PTO the same why and it was steady. So I just swapped them out, and the fuse no longer blew.

@StarKnight619

@@Mike-su8si not the switch the unit itself. Its basically a electro magnet and they can go bad without seeming they are. unplug the PTO and do a continuity test, if the numbers on your tester (im assuming you have a digital one) is bouncing around to all sorts of numbers, its bad or starting to go bad. I had a semi-used one on another mower that had a bad engine and tested that one, and the meter didnt bounce around. So I swapped out the PTO's and it worked like normal. it took me awhile to track it down. I had taken the mower almost completely apart and tested every part on the power line. The and narrowed it down to the PTO unit.

@@StarKnight619 so you mean the pulley clutch. I gave my tester away i don't have any now but i did test and see if the clutch would do anything by touching the battery charger red to the blue wire and the black to the black wire all that the pulley clutch done was hummed and the belt around it is engaged thats how i got the mower though the last guy said he was using the mower and it just shut off i need to disengage the belt so i can finish cleaning up other parts on the engine that the other people spray painted were the paint shouldn't be at and the Kohler courage sv725 doesn't go to the john deere sst18 w/48c mower that engines wiring was full blown half assed done how they did they had put a oil drain elbow on before mounting the engine but didn't tighten that onto the crankcase and i had to cut it off just to unscrew it off from the crankcase then i screwed in the regular oil drain pipe so who last done this engine I'd really be surprised if it even started up for them i don't believe what the guy told me that it just shut off while he was using it theres no way he was just using it last year from how it looked and the dry gas tank old dirty dry air filter i know its carburetor needs redone I'll get to that once i finish on the pto switch or pulley clutch problem and its yellow wire that keeps popping the fuse But you know this cheap engines wiring was a big mess i got most of that redone yesterday evening so its relays are good its carburetor bowl solenoid is good i was testing stuff out with my battery charger until i get a new starter for the Kohler because the one on it is shot
