That connecting rod design is called a "cracked cap" design. Yep they literally break the cap off after machining the rod. Fairly common nowadays, fairly revolutionly when the 8.1 Deere was being designed. It's a good system, works extremely well when used within design limits. Cummins has used it in the b series since 2003. Works well, will break when the power gets turned up, application specific.
@Blazer02LS

Common on many engines these days from weed whackers on up. The rod end is actually stronger and more accurate with the fractured area offering more surface area. Freaked me out though when I first did a few while building engines. Sort of makes you cringe when you're told to "just put it in the fixture and hit it with a hammer"

he's not out of the woods yet . That liner cracked for a reason even if i've seen that happens for no exact reasons a few times but that was on small tractors and that the tractor was very old and had a lot of hours on it and the liner was warned out . Tractors like this huge fellow are operated by booster components which whenthey fail can cause such kind of damages even on a not very old liner . To change a liner that failed is easy but to find what caused a farely new liner to fail thats much harder . At the dealer shop it wouldhave been way more expensive but they would have done a deep search on why the liner failed . There are may reasons why that piston and liner failed .

@@guytremblay1647 it looks someone hit the good ole ether button by accident when it was running. Plus it’s common for a 8.1 to crack an sleeve and melt the piston. They put aluminum pistons in them from factory and they are prone to fail. I’d Think if it was something major it would’ve cracked a couple other and melted a couple others

Do you imagine how much money that guy avoided spending by rebuilding that engin himself ? And he makes it look so easy to do which actually is . The hard part is not rebuilding the engin when you actually know the basics cause all engin blocks are particly the same beside the cylinder heads either its a gasoline engin or a diezel one with only minor differences that sets them appart but the basic of the engin blocks are pretty much the same aside from some little minor differences proper to the manifacturer . The first time i rebuilt a diezel engin i was so scared of goofing it up but when i looked at the price to rebuild one i couldn't in a speciallized shop it kind of motivated me to make sure that i wouldn't goof up and when i started to take the engin appart i said to myself this is to easy . The hard part at the end wasn't the actual rebuilding of the engin itself but rather taking the engin out of the machine and putting it back in . There are more parts to take out so you can take the engin out than there are in the engin itself and these are the ones you need to be carefull of setting back the right way that they are supposed to . Nice Job Wes ,but i wasn't surprised to see the engin run well at the end . What suprised me was how fast you did it .

its not new its a partially rebuilt engin . He only replaced one liner and one piston . To be brand new he would have needed to rebuild the entire thing all together cylinder head included and replace all liners and journals and rings and main berrings for all he knows he might melt down another piston and blow another liner along the road in the future since he didn,t take out the other pistons to inspect them for signs of weakness which he will probably do if ever this happens again on another cylinder of the same engin . In normal times thats what a qualified mécanic would do but for Wes he's more practical than that since taking out tractor engins is fairely easy for him and he only wanted to get it running again so he could finish the job in time so he can go home and finish his own jobs . Once he'll be there if he blows anotherliner he wont care to do an actual real overall cause there he has eough tractors to get the job done and he can let the tractor sleep in the garage untill he's done with all of his jobs and then he can concentrate on doing a complete overall of the engin . Thats how farmers think specially when they think about getting things done before winter

@@Blazer02LS Inhis case you're right that there was no real reasons since he can take a tractor appart as easely as he can cahnge a wheel berring but for the common mortal that doesn't have his mecanic skills and cannot afford to pay to get an engin of this kind taken appart a second time its not the kind of chances you will want to take .since you already have the engin on the table . If Wes didn't have the mecanic skills thatyhe has i'm pretty sure that he would have asked for the engin to be verify all over since coolant got inside and it doesn,t take much of it to ruin internal parts . I've seen engin where the piston journals were absolutly flawless after this kind of breakdown and the machanic said that by logic if the piston journals are ok then the ones for the crankshaft have to be also but the mécanic in chief said to dismental the main berrings anyway to make sure and thats when we saw that he was right to ask him to do that cause those journals had allready started to rip and turn bleu saving the owner lots of money in the process
