I've seen people interpret the colors of the banisters as the colors of a bruise. The banister is a bruise, which is blue at start, and when it's healing it turns gray and green. ofc it's most likely mental bruises and not physical bruises. So the sisters/friends help her heal from the bruises left from the man. Btw I love that Lana's songs offer so many interpretations. They're always more metaphorical than it seems.

omg, that's wild. i love that interpretation too, esp b/c a bruise is so physical, the fact that it could be representative of an emotional/mental pain reinforces the depth of pain...invisible pain (mental) portrayed as visible (bruise) 🥀 thank you for mentioning that! 😊 and same! i love how so many interpretations can fit one song! really shows how great the songwriting is

Yes it’s definitely about a bruise just pain she even said he’d come back in may if she paints the banister blue…she chooses not to allow the bruise/pain …and instead is choosing to heal as the green/grey is the bruise healing

49 people read that and thought enough to hit the thumbs up. Me too!! I can tell you the secrets of her songs. She is Juliette looking for her Romeo. She sings to him, hoping longing, to wake him. Then, she finally does, “I finally met a man who said he’d paint…..” and she dies. “Hole inside my heart, all my women try and heal, their doing a good job of convincing me that it’s not real.” Probably calling her crazy that “Romeo” is coming. Romeo, the classic lady and the tramp, that Love from a man who has nothing but will help her paint her banisters blue . She’s hoping that, "you and I will be the lucky ones this time.” She wants to find Romeo, live and love him. And make her life into a work of art in the process of finding each other. Do you think she’ll be mad at Romeo if he shows up after 18 years of her singing to him and him oblivious, substituting drugs for her love? Or is she going to be like oh baby finally? The best way to bond is to work side by side…. but…. How would he even go about getting a hold of her? Assuming he’s the traditional Romeo/Tramp, what if he heard her music, realized it was about him that she was singing about, her twin flame was lost like a “the candle in the wind”. Then he’s like here I am, but he can’t break into her world, and no one will listen? What then? Jump off the H? Lightning… twin flames…. Wildflower wildfire twin flames, Romeo + Juliet

Thank you so much for this brilliant analysis - you brought up some things I hadn't even thought about! I'm a filmmaker/director, and I wanted to share my interpretation of the music video: I interpret it that the man she is singing about is actually the man behind the camera in both the John Deere photo and the actual whole video itself (not literally, as in I don't think he literally directed the video, but in the context of the video, he's behind the camera looking in on her life and on what he has lost). It’s like she’s creating this memory for him, showing him what he’s lost/left behind etc and that she can move on without him. He’s the one viewing it through the grey filter - watching her life go on without him. The moments when she looks to camera are very specific and her expressions say so much. It's like she's saying "look, I’m getting on with my life and I’m not painting my banisters blue", but every now and then she has to remind him of the pain of his broken promises, and that’s when she looks at the camera in a melancholy way. She’s trying to heal and forget but he’s always there watching and when she looks at the camera she sees him and is reminded of her pain. (Or alternatively, wants to show him her pain). At 2.42, she looks at the camera briefly, but then it pans away, as if he's moving the camera because he doesn’t want to see her happiness without him. If you look at her expression at 4.27 and how she looks away, it's like she’s reminded he’s there - reminded of him and what he didn’t give to her. The look on her face when she looks round at the camera at the end of the video is like she knows it’s the last time, because she’s moving on, letting him go, and healing is coming to her finally. She turns away and goes back to painting her banisters green and grey with her women. I also think about the line "‘There’s a man that’s still right here” - he is there, behind the camera, haunting her. When she released the video she said ‘directed by no one’ which I find very interesting. I could be reading too much into this, but I think that could be an extension of the video itself. Perhaps she said it was directed by no one because in the context of the video it is directed by a ghost from her past. He’s the one behind the camera, and now, because he's left her, he’s 'no one'. Also just as a side note, when I was watching your analysis I also noticed for the first time that in the shot where it shifts from heat lightning to sunlight (great observation by the way, I hadn't noticed that before!), it's also a shift from the weathervane to the unpainted banisters in the same shot! Thanks again for the fantastic analysis!

This song reminds me of Mariners Apartment Complex. In that song she's this sort of metaphorical lighthouse and her boyfriend is this sailor that refuses to go towards it because he wants to be the man and find his way back to land on his own. But in Blue Banisters she's willingly going towards that lighthouse "He's real enough to touch in my darkest night, he's shining". But the lighthouse isn't there anymore. He doesn't want to be her lighthouse. He wants HER to paint her own banisters blue, and become her own support system and then he'll help her but thats difficult for her because she's very dependent on the people around her for support. Also you were very right on the theory of Lana being the banisters. In the NFR! title track she says that her boyfriend colours her blue, "It's just what you do. Your head in your hands as you colour me blue," In Sportscruiser, one of her poems, she talks about becoming a weathervane so she knows where the wind is coming from. The same way you say friends use key words for like "inside dialogue" is kinda like Lana and her own songs. But I really love your interpretation of the song, though 😭 This is the best thing about poems and lyrics.

i have always interpretated the "you can't be a muse and be happy too" line as lana being the muse for her lover? like in one of her other songs, the best american record (demo version) she says that her lover was obsessed with writing a record which kind of kept her on the side tracks, so maybe she is bringing that theme again. jenny is telling that you cant just be someone's muse, that wouldn't make you happy. you have to be with someone who treats you more than a muse? like an actual person who they have feelings for and not someone they love writing about. loving the analysis so far! thank you :)

i think that's a great way to interpret it too!! like she just wants to be treated like a person, like you said 😊 i kind of flipped it b/c for this particular love interest, he wasn't a musician (i don't think? Since May is that sad time, that’s why the friends “paint, paint”. It’s repeated twice to emphasise that it’s the worst time, but her “sisters” paint in the sadness with her, helping her to see grey. Grey, to me, is like when you’ve existed in the blue for so long that you sort of become numb, it’s bleak grey.

First of all, thank you so much for this analysis, it made the song so much more for me. When you pointed out that Lana chose the word ''don't'' instead of ''can't'' so the protagonist is choosing not to remember, I had a crisis, a good one, so thank you. Also, I have some different interpretations throughout the song, the first of all is about the idea of banisters, I don't think painting it was an actual promise the character had, it would be too convenient metaphorically because a banister is a support, something to support you through your 'journey', and the protagonist's banisters seem to be blue by default (which for me is an indication of a depressed state, not necessarily having depression tho). What I get from painting the blue banisters is like you said, existing with the protagonist with her sadness, but not reinforcing it, I think when she paints her blue banisters blue is when she's at her hardest moment (When someone else does, they are helping her endure). About the chorus, the man returning every May may be an indicative that the protagonist was having a long term relationship at distance? If so, this would explain a lot about how hard the feelings of the protagonist were when they broke up. I don't think that the protagonists painting the banisters blue is a condition for the man to come, I think he came every May no matter what just to be there, specially if she was feeling her lowest. About the weathervane, I think just like you is about her intuition but also I think it communicates with this 'depressed state' I assumed the protagonist is, when people are really down they see no perspective of a future, so the weathervane was broke, wasn't pointing any direction for her to go, she was not seeing light at the end of the tunnel, so the man was supposed to give her a purpose once again (which is like you said, a very vulnerable space). Even tho she mentions him being able to 'fix' the weathervane, I don't think she meant him to take her out of this sadness by himself, but act like medicine, take away the symptoms (give me children, take away my pain). About the hole in her heart, I personally thinks this imagery is trying to portrait denial. Because when something breaks, you have to admit it no longer works, there's no running away from the fact that it broke. Now a heart with a hole seems to me like the protagonist is still trying to move forward and denying that the pain and hurt still exists. In the second chorus "Now when weather turns to may", because she mentions weather here instead of just saying the month of May came, makes me believe her weathervane is working again (also in the video there's a shot of it spinning) so the protagonist might be getting out of the hardest part. Its said the sisters paint the banisters green, but the banisters are still blue (so the depressed state is still there), what I think it means the banisters being painted green is that she's happy when sharing moments with them, a thing people often think is that people in a depressed state necessarily NEED to be sad and demonstrate sadness all the time, and its not true. Now with the banisters being grey I don't think its about mixed feelings, I have this understanding that grey symbolizes a place of numbness, you're not at the bottom, but you don't see the world as colorful. This might be a way of moving forward, its just not a happy state yet (And this also could explain the choice of the low saturation in the music video, almost like a grey filter). The chickens running and baby coming I agree, here seems to be the protagonist marking the passage of time again, because at their worst people might lose the notion of time passing, which could also explain the juxtaposition of the seasons in the next verse. She experienced them passing as if they were kind of mixed, or if it happened in a blink of an eye, except for spring who was ruined by the man she once met. I'm so sorry for this looong WALL of text, I really liked your video and it kept me thinking a lot, so I needed to write down some of this thoughts. Thank you if you had the patience to read this far, your videos are very good.

i love what you said about the blueness of the banisters being a default state, that's true. it's like that's the protagonist's baseline super interesting to also think of the weathervane as showing that the protagonist herself does not have any direction or purpose, thanks for mentioning that! i LOVE what you said about the second chorus! about how the weather is mentioned, suggesting that her weathervane is working again. that's a great catch, and so beautiful in the context of this song. such a small detail but it changes so much✨ thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! i enjoyed reading them 😊✨

You explained everything so well and you covered all the bases, I really enjoyed listening to you ❣️ For me, "Diamonds, rust and rain" are like the steps in a relationship or a pattern. So it's shiny and new at first (diamond), then if issues arise or if there's a break-up it's like rust (which covers up the good parts) and at the end, when you start to heal the rain comes to wash it all away and brings sunshine afterwards❣️

This was amazing. I'm pretty sure Chucky is her sister IRL, and Tex and Mex are her dogs. Also, I interpret her sisters not being able to give her 'the diamonds, the rust and the rain' as them not being able to give her the things she really, deep down wants/needs i.e. diamonds = marriage, like he promised, rust = time to heal, as rust takes time to form (in combination with rain/moisture, often) and rain = literal rain to put out the fires, but also metaphorical rain, to wash away the pain, as she says in the next line. I think it means that her sisters can help her, but only to a certain point -- they cannot change things at an elemental level, like the things that diamonds/rust/rain could/will.

Great video! What I find interesting on Blue Bannisters and Arcadia is Lana's play on words and rhyming. In Arcadia she sing's “straight like an A“ -- and sings on "angel". That surprised me, as I thought of her meaning "straight A", as in in the grade A etc. In Blue Bannisters “Oh,“ and “Oklahoma“ seem to blend together into one sigh. This "attaching" of words after a first letter or word plays with the expectations of the listeners!

I agree in many ways with this analysis, and I think it's a testament to Lana's writing how on-point we are in interpreting things so similarly. The lyrics of “chickens running barefoot” isn’t the true lyric, but it’s been plastered everywhere. While I prefer chickens with their shoes on myself, she's actually referring to her brother Jake to further paint a familial image with both of her siblings and Chuck's baby alongside her friends. Sorry in advance if somebody else already cleared it up. Really love your videos!

Not done yet, I don't know if you mention this later (I'll edit or delete this if you do), but I like to think of the Russian poetry line as like her sort of coping mechanism/comfort to her. She has a song called "Lolita" on her first album, and she said she had a lot of inspiration from Vladimir Nabokov, at least early on in her career. So in a way, I interpret that as her kind of way of showing how some things never change; all these years later she's still blackening the pages with Russian poetry. Edit: I finished the video and I think it was fantastic!! You did an amazing job analyzing the lyrics and the meaning behind the song. Thank you!

The thing about bruises makes a lot of sense because if you analyze the covers of the 3 singles (text book, wildflower wildfire and blue bannisters) all of them have bruises in it, and the bruises are more healed in each one of the covers together with the colour palette being each time more warm, being the blue bannisters one the one that has the warmest colours and the bruises almost gone

i really like how you're viewing the russian poetry as a coping mechanism she's always had. it's interesting b/c the very thing she's using to help calm her ("blackening the pages...") is harming her in another aspect of her life...i feel like there's some subtle irony there and it's heartbreaking b/c she's just trying to cope :/ thank you for your kind words, i appreciate it! 😊 yes! another person commented something similar to this as well and i was ~shook~. i think that interpretation works really well, i haven't listened to "ultraviolence" yet (i need to "study" (lol) her previous work more ) so i would be inclined to view the bruises as emotional or psychological but given the context you're referring to in her previous albums it could suggest physical harm as well. i find that interpretation so so somber b/c the sort of abuse that causes bruising (physical or mental/emotional) is dark & heavy but it's juxtaposed by the act of painting which is a relatively calm and light sort of action. it's leisurely...the fact that that sort of action (painting) is a part of her healing after going thru things that have caused 'bruising' make me view the protagonist as both delicate and a strong warrior at the same time ahhh ty for your comment!! 😊

@@summersentiment A delicate, strong warrior perfectly describes Lana! She's said, "Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself; I am large- I contain multitudes." 🙂

The color theme is definitely about a bruise just metaphorical for pain she even said he’d come back in may if she paints the banister blue…the initial color of the bruise/trauma…if he comes back she knows it will just cause her pain and instead she chooses not to allow the bruise/pain again in may …and instead is chooses to heal as the green/grey is showing the bruise is healing

The more I listen to this the more I think it could directly be about her pain in connection to her fertility? Shes v direct about his giving her children taking away her pain. May is the lead up to her birthday …which is hard if you’re a woman wanting kids… lana is mid 30’s now so it’s “the years” where the clock is ticking. And we don’t know what’s happened in this area, maybe there’s even been a miscarriage / abortion. / who knows…..

i think that makes sense too! especially b/c she mentioned children specifically. thank you for sharing your thoughts😊 it's so beautiful that there are so many ways to view this song (and that they're all valid!✨)

In salamander she says “my life is my poetry, my love making is my legacy”- do you think she means legacy in that way here? I’m not sure how that’d fit in with the rest because I totally agree with your interpretation, but it gives some insight on how lana percieves her own legacy so it kinda confuses me

There’s no rain with heat lightning no water no cleansing no putting out the Santa Claria fires just something that creates fires! She’s a mess but keeping it to herself...causing an explosion (not the exact word I want to use but kind of close)

it would be really cool if you could listen to Weyes Blood's album Front Row Seat to Earth and analyze your favorite songs from it. It holds NFR status for me, very powerful.

with the can’t vs. don’t i love this interpretation but i’m hesitant to accept it as i find many people in typical every-day conversation use don’t when they mean can’t is this intentional, thoughtful diction, or just the way she talks?
@summersentiment
3 жыл бұрын
that's a good point!😊 it could be either tbh 🤷🏻♀️ i'm slightly more inclined to think it's intentional b/c lana writes poetry and i assume (based on nothing lol) that ppl who are used to being emotive thru words would intuitively pick a word w/ the right connotation.. but it could 100% just be unintentional like you mentioned!
