Hot weather, little oxygen in the water, presence of a parasite and stress on female blue crabs due to spawning. These are the possible causes under the lens of the scholars of the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute (Izs) of the Venice area who are analyzing some of the blue crab carcasses that arrived on the shores of the Po Delta beaches in July 2024. Far from being able to make a dent in the spread of these a pest species on the coasts, the death of blue crabs may also be linked to mucilage: "The mucilage was present for several weeks in the Italian seas and it is a deposit of a lot of organic substance, which arrived in the sea with heavy rain. When it decomposes it leads to a decrease in oxygen in the water which may have led to the death of fish for example in Orbetello and of blue crabs here" explains Giuseppe Arcangeli, director of the national reference center for fish, mollusc and crustacean diseases of the IZS Venice. Among the areas where blue crab carcasses are present is the Boccasette beach in Porto Tolle, in the Po delta. Despite an initial cleaning carried out by the fishermen of the cooperatives, many specimens still remain in the process of decomposing. The situation is occurring especially in free beach areas where maintenance is less.
