This is the 1st time I heard it is necessary to be with your Heeler 24 hrs./day. Are you serious?! I was considering a Rhodesian Ridgeback, then decided perhaps a medium-size dog would be easier. So am considering a Heeler. However, if I am working part time and away from home for 5-6 hours, is a Heeler not for me? Otherwise, I spend most of my time at home and live a very active lifestyle out on my large property, running, cycling, hiking, mountaineering that I figured the Heeler could participate in. If you think the Heeler is not a good fit, do you have any recommendations? I love and respect all animals. Wanted to be a veterinarian when I was young. Study a lot of animal psychology too. Have 4 cats now. Thanks!

@@ShikokuFoodForest You don’t have to be with any animal 24 hrs per day. That’s absurd. Does anyone say that we need to be with our toddlers 24 hrs per day or they won’t grow up to be happy/healthy? We had a Siberian husky who recently passed away. People told us we shouldn’t do it since I was in school and my husband worked. There were some days she was alone for way longer than we would have liked but 5 days a week we were going on long hikes, she was pulling us on our mountain bikes, we played frisbee in the field. She lived for 14.5 years and died happy. She was the best dog ever and we made it work because we loved her. If you think you can give this breed of dog a happy, loving home with lots of exercise, they will be just fine. Trust me 😉

All my kids are grown up now so he lives with my wife and I Every thing in the Vid is correct but they have to be socialized with people and especially children because they can become a bit nippy if not well monitored. They have been bred to herd cattle and they nip at the heels of anything that is not their family. Hence the name, also known as the Australian Cattle Dog. They also read people quickly and if you are up to no good watch out!!! Peter From Australia

An hour a day is definitely not enough. This is a breed that needs a job. Herding, Frisbee, agility... it doesn't matter. The only thing is that this is a breed that needs a mission. I think it would be an ideal candidate for a service breed. If you're considering this breed, absolutely be aware that an hour running around in the yard is not enough. They are an outstanding breed, but make sure you can keep it busy.

My father’s Australian cattle dog, Kaycee, sprang into action. She jumped in between Sarah and the pitbull and was attacked by the pit bull instead. We take her to the dog park they have all breeds but there is a husky trio, mum dad and son. Every dog no matter how big get scrutinized by the 3 huskies until our little nagger came on the scene. Puppy husky was the first to come and lay down the rules, Bonnie, our dog had her 2c worth do mum and dad came over, the four of them had a screamathon until it was agreed by all that Bonnie could out nag a husky.

We had one on the farm for years until the early 90s. We got a Blue Heeler because they're known as good cattle dogs but he never took to chasing or herding cattle for us. He did NOT like any other dogs and chased away any stray that wandered into our farm. And we couldn't have any cats while he was here as he would chase them away or kill them. A very territorial dog but he was very friendly and loved to be around people. The Blue Heeler we had prior to him was very good with the cattle and loved to help us herd them. Unfortunately we didn't have her for very long. She was acting very strange one afternoon and even lunged at me. It's scary when a really good dog growls and lunges at you. Anyway I waited about an hour and checked on her and she was dead by then. The next day my dad noticed that a corner of a bag of granular herbicide was torn and some of the contents were on the floor of the shed. BHs have a lot of energy and we think she was looking for something to do and chewed on that bag of herbicide.

Great dogs. I got a red heeler puppy in May, the first since the two mixes I had when I moved on my place 30 years ago. They have the most feral behavior of any "breed" I have ever handled, but beware. They are notorious "nippers". I know of one that bit through the sidewall of an expensive Michlen tire when a strange automobile came on the owner's property.
@66limelight

I laughed when you said they're "nippers". While the ones we had never bit any people they did like to bite on other things. My friend stopped by with his little Honda 80 when we were teenagers and "Max" had a hold of the back tire of his motorcycle and wouldn't let go! He didn't poke a hole in it but I think he just thought it was a toy and was having fun.

I believe that people take the pups too early (because they look so cute) If left with their litter for 12 weeks they fight, argue and play with the other pups and parents. This is where they learn to control their biting/ mouthing. They learn very quickly not to bite too hard. So pick your pup out of the litter but leave them there. The longer the better

Having raised 3 blue heelers, they really do not need to see you 24 hours a day. That said, they also aren't great at being left alone for hours a day without something to do. They are couch potatoes once they've gotten out their energy for the day, but if they don't get that, they will find things to do when you're not home that you may not be happy about. 😂 You also have to commit to training them and being the leader of the pack, or they will walk all over you. But given the right person and training, there is imho no better, smarter, more loyal, fun, or more loving companion. I only have my Abigail left now, and she's 12. When the time comes to get a puppy again, it will 100% be a blue heeler.
