Hi Michael. I'm interesting in getting a blue heeler after my jack russell passed away after 15 years together. I currently live in an apartment, but it's out in central pa where there's plenty of dog runs and outdoor trails. How often do you get yours out in a week to keep him happy?
@michaelcallaway6195
5 ай бұрын
@michaelsantoro170 We usually go to the dog park 3 times a week for about an hour at a time. He runs on the trails with me 4 times a week. I take him on walks about 4 times a day if not more. And we mix in fetch, tug-of-war and other games daily.
@michaelsantoro170
5 ай бұрын
@michaelcallaway6195 does that seem to tire him out? Even with a jack russell, it was roughly 3 walks a day, and maybe the dog park once or twice a week at most, and he was always happy (I was also living in a three story house with my family at the time, so there was a lot of room for a small dog). I'm just concerned about not doing the right thing as an owner if I end up getting one, so thankyou for letting me know how active your dog is.

"Like any other dog they are prone to various illnesses". You may as well change it to "dog breed". Those illnesses arise from the breed and lack of genetical variety. Mutt dogs are still dogs and they are healthier.

My partner and I have a border collie x kelpie and after a year, we decided to get him a friend (cattle dog x). We made the mistake of not looking at their history and needs… and take full responsibility for that. We got him from a rescue and he has scars all over his limbs and body so he has some sort of trauma happen. We’ve now had him for a year and it’s been a nightmare. We tried our best to train him the same way we trained our border collie but he quickly turned into a dominant bully. As you mentioned, he attacks his ankles all the time and asserts his dominance. Our border collie has turned into a completely different dog and just seems so depressed all the time. We take them both out twice a day for big runs/hitting the ball in a park with a tennis racket to burn their energy. We leave toys around the house and leave kongs and treats out but still he still is a terror and destroys our house/yard and come home to our border collie depressed from being bullied. He is also now lunging at kids on the lead and is getting aggressive towards other dogs. The other night he attacked our border collie too and ripped a bunch of hair out. We often come home to furniture and stuff around the house being destroyed. We have a tiny property with no room to run, so we always take them to a park but through out the day when we are working they stay inside because we don’t want them to dig holes in the backyard of our rental. Can you please suggest anything we can do? Is this trauma, dominance and behaviour something that can be trained? Or is it a good idea to find him a home on a farm? Again, I take full responsibility for the way he is and I wish I could go back and change the way I did things. Just trying to reach out for help! Thank you for reading.

Hi, how is this going if I may ask?
@rachkate76
11 ай бұрын
@@Lifeoftheotheheelerthey probably dumped them at a shelter like most Ameritards. The worst thing we ever did was let them get these dogs. They have no yards, then get cattle dogs and think a run here and there a day will suffice. Both of those dogs are suffering and because of dickheaded owners. Too many of them bought one because of Bluey- as if a tv show was ever going to be a good enough reason to buy a high needs dog.

I have a blue heeler pup, I treat her much more harshly, than any previous pup. She is almost 6 months old. If I treated my border collie like I do the pup, she would telephone the police herself. When my pup bites my wrist in a playfight, I reward her with an openhanded smack on her head, she gathers herself, then is slightly more gentle in her playfighting. I don't make it a big deal, I don't say anything, I just let her know, she has gone too far.

Heelers are very sensitive. Teach a good “no” command. A harsh toned NO and attention deficit will teach her it’s inappropriate. Don’t hit. Mine grew out of it around 1.5 years. They are mouthy dogs, hence the name. If he’s over excited he might but pulls back and never with any force.

@@MrBobbo18 Thank you for your reply. My dogs come to work with me, so they need to be under strict control off-leash. The pup is now approaching 8 months old, and her behaviour is outstanding. I recognise in this modern world, city folk think discipline is an antiquated concept. I had a horse trainer lady, who works with disabled children, staying at my property, she told me, it was too much, the pup wouldn't stop jumping on her. I gave her permission to strike the pup. After the lady followed through, the pup has never jumped on another person (particularly women). My dogs are very well adjusted, behave in a manner, that is appropriate for their breed. Happy go lucky ... but also follow directions.

My dog Darwin is not a cuddler. He likes to be scratched every so often, and he likes to be able to see me(in the same room when we're inside), but I would define our relationship more as "co-workers" than a more traditional person/dog relationship. That said, when we're around other people, they may as well not even exist to him. He is 100% focused on me, waiting to get to work, and isn't really interested in meeting new people or playing with other dogs. Most of them that I've met have a very similar mentality, but there are more than a few that I know that are pretty affectionate dogs. All of those are female; I'm not sure if that's related or just coincidence.
