AMERICAN FANFARE …............................ RICK KIRBY
American Fanfare takes the normally hymn-like strains of America (My Country 'Tis of Thee) and incorporates it into a fast and energetic fanfare.
OLD IRONSIDES……………………………………JOHN PHILLIP SOUSA
In 1926, patriotic citizens noted the deterioration of the historic old frigate Constitution, better known as “Old Ironsides,” and waged a vigorous campaign to have it restored. At a rally held in Madison Square Garden, enough money was raised to insure success of the movement. For that occasion, Sousa composed this march. He led the massed bands of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Army, but whether or not the new march was played is not certain. Oddly, the march was never published, and only a manuscript sketch is known to exist today.
KYIV, 2022…………………………………………………………BRIAN BALMAGES
With the tragic events unfolding in Ukraine, Brian Balmages has written a powerful sequel to his Moscow, 1941, this work changes the narrative, where the theme from Moscow now represents the aggressor, and the heroic people of Ukraine are represented by the Ukrainian National Anthem and the powerful song Prayer for Ukraine.
ON A HYMNSONG OF PHILIP BLISS…………DAVID HOLSINGER
The frantic tempos, the ebullient rhythms we associate with Holsinger are replaced with a restful, gentle, and reflective composition based on the 1876 Philip Bliss-Horatio Spafford hymn, It Is Well with My Soul.
THE FALLS…………………………………………… .ROSSANO GALLANTE
Highlighting a waterfall as it cascades over rocky terrain, sparkling wind and brass fanfares depict the water as it rushes forward before exploding over the edge. Sweeping melodic lines transport us into the mysterious and rapturous wilderness, evoking one of nature's most glorious spectacles.
HANDS ACROSS THE SEA……………………….JOHN PHILLIP SOUSA
The march was addressed to no particular nation, but to all of America’s friends abroad. It has been suggested that Sousa was inspired by an incident in the Spanish-American War, in which Captain Chichester of the British Navy came to the support of Admiral Dewey at Manila Bay. A second (and more likely) source is a line by Frere, which was printed on the front cover of the sheet music: “A sudden thought strikes me-let us swear an eternal friendship.”
WIND RACERS……………………………………………………JEREMY BELL
This fast and powerful work plays off a single motif that continues to build in energy to the very end. Soaring woodwinds trade off the motif while the warmth of the brass section creates a unique dynamic featuring intensely fast and bright flourishes.
WASHINGTON POST…………………………..JOHN PHILLIP SOUSA
Arguably Sousa's second most famous march, The march was created in 1889 to celebrate the first awards presented by the Washington Post Amateur Authors Association. 25,000 people gathered on the Smithsonian grounds to watch 11 students be awarded gold medals for winning the inaugural Amateur Authors essay contest.
OLYMPIADA………………..…….………………………………SAMUEL HAZO
Olympiada was written to capture the human conditions of intense glory and pain that only the Olympic Games can inspire, while musically tying themes with a historic Greek feel to modern chord changes and melodies. It opens with an Olympic style brass fanfare to set the tone, and quickly breaks into a variety of themes and settings representing athletic struggle before recapitulating the fanfare at the end.
