If you lose or break the clip go buy the bushings for the cables that can take a replacement . It comes with 2 bushings and a clip. Dorman 14104

That tiny clip you pushed out to separate the 2 cables , can that pop all the way out, or does it stop a certain point? I just didn't want to push on that tiny retaining clip & it pop all the way out & be screwed & not be able to get to back in.
@BlueLineGarage

It comes all the way out, but it's super fragile. Once removed, it tends to stay bent open a bit, and if force is closed to it original size, it sometimes breaks off. So be delicate when removing it and placing it back on. If breaks, then I would order the other cable that has it. Swap parts for that small little clip and then return it back to the store saying you ended up not using it, and thats how u get a replacement clip since they don't sell it separately.

why exactly was it you had to replace the whole wire?? this happened to my moms tahoe just today and when i pop the cable back on it will shift. tow guy said to just buy a new bushing to hold it on like the factory bushing it came with and it will be perfectly fine. Just curious as to how i would know if the whole thing needs to be changed?

If you do replace your cables, be sure to replace both sections of the cable. There is a metal connection point between the upper and lower cables that when removed will then be compromised and is not recommended to be reused. Per ASE procedures. 🤙🏻

Hey thank you for the video, i had a question i tried replacing mine but now the shift part won't reach the transmission shifter and i tried putting the original one back on but it won't reach either.

Make sure it's in park. When you move the shifter it changes the length
@d50erock1975

The cable is adjustable for this exact reason. You'll have to push in the new cable housing further after you have the transmission gear selector end on. Once you do that then install that large clip. You may need to push the adjust end in a little bit more when putting the clip in place to ensure you get Full range of motion.

Go to auto store and buy a new kit and carefully remove the pin amd package it back up and return it saying you decided not to use it. You get ur money back and a clip for free. That's what I had to do on two separate vehicles. Good luck and make sire you subscribe.

@@YoungGearHeads did you change the whole cable or bushing? The bushings never stay on but you also need to make sure you push it hard enough on that nipple on the gear shift tab. Your better off getting a new cable for around $20 bucks and then it clips on properly

dealer and rock auto are saying you need to replace the upper cable at the same time. No thanks. Also, avoid the bushing part #14104 from auto stores. It's useless and doesn't hold onto the nipple from the shift lever.

@@EF_DadLeftMe which part? The section the two cables connect to each other or to the transmission lever? From the lever it pops off with some force. To separate the two cables there is a white tab that needs to be pulled away but also a copper looking "U" clip that needs to be removed but be careful, it breaks easily. Once that clip is removed u can remove the cable.

@@EF_DadLeftMe the u clip is not engaged or missing. It's copper looking that snaps in the groove below the point of the cable.
