@KGBA32

SN7 pulse deserves more use! As for the FM drums, probably SSG-EG is what really makes the difference. The Pitch slide down effect helps a bit too, as it gives the percussion a bit of an extra punch. SN7 noise it's just there to smooth out the sound.

Was just thinking of the same question. I've not seen that much of realistic sounding synthesized drums usage as of yet and this one is one excellent example! Not to mention many of the other sounds in here as well. It also shows here that everything is put together in a way so that in conjuction it sounds as closely to the original studio recording as possible. I think I even listened to a "YM2612 remix" titled cover of this song by another homebrew musician before and obviously was not nearly as impressed.

The tools to get there just didn't exist back then. I programmed commercial games in that era and you pretty much typed numbers and prayed the 2612 sounded like something. (Yamaha's actual synths weren't any better, which is why every 80s song had DX-7 presets but no programmed sounds). Modern VSTs like Plogue's chipSynth MD have a much better interface for creating sounds.

Various sound drivers created by devs being the main problem. I am a HUGE fan of the sound driver from developer Opera House, but I ALSO love the GEMS sound driver from Western devs who worked on the Genesis. The Krysalis sound driver which composer Matt Furniss and programmer Shaun Hollingworth used is awesome. Then, you can't forget about the sound driver Yuzo Koshiro used when he composed The Revenge of Shinobi and Streets of Rage which happened to be amazing.

the lesson Sega learned too late is that it doesn't matter if the hardware is capable of amazing things if it's very hard and esoteric to get those amazing things to work. not every developer had the demoscene spirit or the budget to spend trying to squeeze the woah factor out of the Genesis (and the Saturn)
@aceshighdueceslow
