I watched an interview with him and he was talking about this song. He said that the song was about his battle with drug addiction. At the time, he did not mention anything about it being related to any kind of mental health problems. I know this is not a popular opinion but...my son had a drug problem starting at age 16 (when we moved to texas) until January of this year (he's now 25). I tried everything as a mom. I talked to him, screamed at him, we went to counseling and nothing helped. So in January, he and his wife split up. Because of his drug problem, he would not hold a job and he has 2 small children. She took the kids and moved back to her home state and my son moved in with me. I told him " this is it...either you want to do better or you'll always stay in the rabbit hole. I'm not going to talk to you anymore after this. It's time you realize you are an adult and YOU are responsible for your acitons and no one should have to pay for your decisions, but you. No one forced you to try drugs that first time...that's all on you. So, i don't feel sorry for you. You are not a victim of circumstance, you're a victim of your own stupidity. You got yourself into this mess and you'll find your way (if you really want out) or I'll end up burying you. I'm not going to support you. You will not do drugs or alcohol in my house. So you'll have to find another place to live. Maybe your drug friends will take you in and ya'll can just have one big party until one of you dies. Either way....You have decisions to make. Life is hard, but its harder when you make dumb decisions and you will not pull the rest of us into your drama of a life." After that, it took him about 3 weeks to straighten up. I guess he did a lot of soul searching and came to the decision that his mother was right. He is still getting a divorce, but he works a good job now, making 200 dollars a day (which is good money for the area we live in) and he hasn't drank or did drugs in months. He also goes to church and this morning before he left for church, he said "give me a hug" I hugged him and he said "I'm sorry for everything I've ever put you through and I love you with all my heart. Never stop being my rock." My heart guys.....

My mom died July, 2022. What hurts the most is I wasn’t there when she drifted away not having ask for her forgiveness. For years I was blaming her for all my fucked up life without understanding that no one force us to choose, we do that for ourselves. I know I have to forgive myself but it’s easy to be a coward than being happy. I need the courage to be happy and understand that my job now is to show my children that hate is baggage, I’m still alive and so are they and I have the blessing to teach my daughter I was so wrong with my family (specifically my mom since she inherited my hate towards them). I’m growing up every day and I’ll never stop to guide them to the right path. Love, Lu

This is one of the best songs ever written. I'm not honestly someone who can relate anything to this song - I'm fortunate enough to have never really struggled with drugs, alcohol, depression - nothing. I love this song though, and it makes me think about how much my mom cares about me. On a unrelated note, it's so hard to find reactors who genuinely feel emotion for music and aren't afraid to show it and be themselves, unapologetically. This is my first video from you and I just want to say: thank you very much for your genuine reaction and I so look forward to your future videos.

he choose suicide so his mom could rest assured peacefully, yes it was selfish of him but he did whatever he thought was best for his mom, in the video he is walking down the stairs and you see his mom holding him, he says with a side heart i say bye to you and waved, and hes walking out the door think of it he is going into the light when exiting the house, cause he thinks he fixed it and his mom says how can you do this to me, its really noticeable in the video. He wanted his mom to be happy. My assumption was that he fell back into his old ways cause of addiction. He just didn't want her seeing him struggle throughout it. Just piece the video visualize it first and tell me you see it how i do the song is so emotional but when he is singing it you can feel hes not only singing it but feeling it in emotions like its actually happened and this is his sorry to her through music video and how he truly actually feels. Just visualize it and listen to the real actual emotions in his voice seriously ❤😢 Also, the tape recorder he's holding through the video im assuming hes recording his reasons why he what he did and thats why at the end places it on his grave then you see it back inside what im assuming the families house, which leaves you to belive she heard it and thats where it'll stay thats what im assuming 😢😢

Beautiful reaction brother ! I fought the demon on addiction and my mom was this same way, never giving up on me when you should have so many times . She had a headache 3 weeks ago and went to the hospital , within 2 hours I got a call saying he had a sudden ma’am brain hemorage and they were removing her off life suport , I didn’t get there in time to say goodbye. Was 3 weeks ago Ajd this song hits me so hard becasue this was me and I feel his pain. When I was in my darkest places I Wanted her to move on and truly forget me and my shit and live rye happy life she deserves . Have been so upset she passed so suddenly and so young , that I have her so much heartache for so much of her life and it’s heartbreaking. His addiction was heroin and has some struggles with mental health and depression, it’s all real and I commend him for writing this song for her and for recording it when it’s really a painful song for himself. He’s taking full ownership and I jsut hope he can forgive himself soon. I saw an interview years ago about the song and he got emotional saying he doesn’t deserve to forgive himself for the pin he cause her and man, that’s tough.

He suffered from depression, ptsd, anxiety, delusions, etc., so he had relocated to Mn to be closer to his family since my parents got divorced(I'm from Ca). I felt like this was how my dad felt. Like just hate me, hate me for not being a father to you and for never being there Bc of my mental health issues. Correct. I imagine tho the music studio decided a music video around his mother would be more relatable perhaps? Music can be subjective, so this song can definitely be geared towards a significant other or a family member depending on the listener.

Sadly my parents haven’t been the greatest and disowned me wayyy back when but I still send letters to their house and tell them I love them. They don’t know it’s me cause I changed my name (being trans) but I hope they know. They always did like my handwriting

Hey BIRDMAN, just discovered a song by BRANTLEY GILBERT that's about abuse. It's damn good. It's called "bullet in a bonfire". But I will warm you, most of the things you see in it is VERY HARD TO WATCH. you might want to kind of pre-view it before.

“("Hi Justin, this is your mother, and it's 2:33 on Monday afternoon I was just calling to see how you were doing You sounded really uptight last night It made me a little nervous, and a l... and... well... it made me nervous, it sounded like you were nervous, too I just wanted to make sure you were really OK And wanted to see if you were checking in on your medication You know I love you, and Take care honey I know you're under a lot of pressure See ya. Bye bye") I have to block out thoughts of you so I don't lose my head They crawl in like a cockroach leaving babies in my bed Dropping little reels of tape to remind me that I'm alone Playing movies in my head that make a porno feel like home There's a burning in my pride, a nervous bleeding in my brain An ounce of peace is all I want for you. Will you never call again? And will you never say that you loved me, just to put it in my face? And will you never try to reach me? It is I that wanted space Hate me today Hate me tomorrow Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you Hate me in ways Yeah, ways hard to swallow Hate me so you can finally see what's good for you I'm sober now for three whole months it's one accomplishment that you helped me with The one thing that always tore us apart is the one thing I won't touch again In my sick way I want to thank you for holding my head up late at night While I was busy waging wars on myself, you were trying to stop the fight You never doubted my warped opinions on things like suicidal hate You made me compliment myself when it was way too hard to take So I'll drive so fucking far away that I never cross your mind And do whatever it takes in your heart to leave me behind Hate me today Hate me tomorrow Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you Hate me in ways Yeah, ways hard to swallow Hate me so you can finally see what's good for you And with a sad heart I say bye to you and wave Kicking shadows on the street for every mistake that I had made And like a baby boy I never was a man Until I saw your blue eyes cry and I held your face in my hand And then I fell down yelling, "Make it go away!" Just make a smile come back and shine just like it used to be And then she whispered, "How can you do this to me?" Hate me today Hate me tomorrow Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you Hate me in ways Yeah, ways hard to swallow Hate me so you can finally see what's good for you For you For you For you”
