Great movie. Very convincing study of a crumbling relationship that makes for uncomfortable viewing. I wouldn't want to watch it again anytime soon but I admire the power of it and how much it got into my head. That to me is a great movie. When it makes you stop and think and look at your own life in a certain way. Youncan't watch this and start to judge yourself and your own relationship and worry about the tiniest cracks. This is the nightmare scenario for every relationship. Not just falling out and hating each other which is easy to quantify and get over but slowly falling out of love. That hurts so much more. It's one of the most convicning depictions of a relationship on screen I've ever seen. Shame it's about it falling apart.

The reason why this film originally received the NC-17 rating is because of the cunnilingus scene, and because of this, Ryan Gosling complained about it and called the MPAA sexist, then the rating was changed to R.

He's downplaying the filmmaking too much. I will never forget the opening or closing shots. It's not like they just gave the camera to some person off the street. It's as much a great film surrounding great performances as The Wrestler was.

It's one of maybe 40 films I have lined up to watch. That it was named after an album by my hero, Tom Waits, was not a small matter in my deciding to buy it.

I don't think people should be dissuaded from listening to that clip alone. I thought the film was wonderful when I saw it.

Ok, going to comment again, because from the comments after mine, it's apparent that everyone thinks that this is some sort of hipster indie movie, which it most certainly IS NOT. For emphasis, this IS NOT HIPSTER INDIE. It is a tough and authentic film that is more about the failing marriage than the times that brought them together. Kermode is downplaying the filmmaking. Just because the director has chosen to not be the star of the film doesn't mean that it wasn't a choice.

@mrdavidjrush It isn't a bad review. In fact, it's made me more likely to watch it with my girlfriend this weekend instead of leaving her to watch it alone. He's just saying it's good but it's not amazing.
