Hello, Just an idea that I have tried in the past and appears to work with varying degrees of success. I applied a light spray of methylated spirit to the surface of the stain. I then allowed the methylated spirit to evaporate naturally. This leaves an interesting , mottled and interesting pattern. Also it is my belief that if you employ sanding sealer to the underside of the item, the colour will not penetrate; works for me but don't hold me to it. I am not insured...:-) Thanks for the entertainment. Frederick

Fantastic work, Stewart! What a spectacular interior. I've got a bowl on the go for my father in law. It's Toronto Blue Jays baseball team themed. The resin I used in the rim has sealed wood that I planned to dye light blue. I don't think I can recover it so I considered dying or painting the inside of the bowl, though I know how much he likes wood natural. So, I've got to decide to go with what I've got now or do the interior. I wasn't sure if the interior was even possible so thanks for giving me permission to do that through your video. :)

Many thanks, Tom! I love the lathe - solid, dependable and the shut-off thigh bar is something I really miss on other lathes! Without the tailstock swingaway it would be a bit irritating to take the tailstock off which needed to be done reasonably often before I got the swingaway. An extension bed might be enough to give you enough bed length

Good day Stewart, A question for you. I've got a 15-year-old block of walnut. 11.5" x 12" x 2.25" No cracks, no warpage. A pristine block of wood, that I bought years ago. I turn on a fixed income, so I don't want to waste it. Looking for a suggestion of what to turn, that would be outstanding? I'm posing this to several of my favorite turners. Thanks.
@stewartfurini
2 жыл бұрын
Hi John - sounds like a very nice block of wood! My thoughts are going towards a wide rimmed bowl, perhaps with a bead at the inner rim where it meets the bowl section. The bowl ideally will be slightly undercut to create a strong shadow line. I would probably go for no embellishment...or would use gold in some way, especially if the walnut is very dark. My preference would be for an ogee on the underside, but perhaps with a lip under the rim for the fingers to feel when it's picked up. Have fun deciding what to do with it! Cheers!!

I love you work but I’ve been told to only apply stains on BARE wood by you do your own thing But what about shellac and spray can ...what’s the difference. I’m easily confused. Any pointers please
@stewartfurini
2 жыл бұрын
Hi David - the general rule is indeed not to put sealer on before stain to allow the stain to soak into the wood. In this instance, I wanted to encourage the stain to sit on the surface a bit longer and 'puddle', though it wasn't ever put on in too great an amount. This was for a particular decorative look. It shouldn't be used if you are staining or dyeing a piece of wood to change colour. Chestnut Products have a great compatibility chart to help work out what you can put on what - chestnutproducts.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Chestnut-Products-Compatibility-Chart-Coloured.pdf Hope it's helpful! Cheers!!
