A Shark Diver Looks Back at two classic ocean films that came out more than 5 decades ago (1971 and 1966). There were things I didn't think twice about or at least thought very differently about when I first saw these films compared to when I watch them now. How about you? Have your perceptions changed?
As someone who has spent a good deal of time on the topic of shark culling, it's particularly interesting to me that I didn't think twice about the mention of the shark nets in Endless Summer nor the blatant correlation of whaling and shark activity on the Durban Coast mentioned in Blue Water White Death.
It's also interesting to consider speciesism in these films and how our feelings toward whaling may have changed, how using a harpooned mammal for a film shoot might be criticized today, and seeing these shark experts needlessly kill sharks with bang sticks.
