Bluebird Project twitter followers will know that we’ve been carrying out some work recently on Avro Vulcan XL319 at the North East Land, Sea & Air Museum in Sunderland.
After a few weeks preparatory work, this video shows the first time we attempted to light No.4 Rolls Royce Olympus engine.
Using the same off board starting air supply that we use for Bluebird, we were on limits for having enough energy to bring the engine to start speed but eventually the engine clears its throat and runs up to idle for the first time in 36 years.
(Editing makes the run appear longer than was actually the case. Footage- Mike Bull/Bill Smith)
