I put up a bluebird box and within a week a bluebird family had moved in. Bluebirds can take care of themselves. The male is often seen tussling with an acorn woodpecker outside his new house. I can't understand it because the hole is 1 9/16, too small for the woodpecker and is designed for the Western bluebird. I've got 4 of them spaced far apart on our horse corral fence.

Thanks so much Carol. Love this. I actually live in Charlotte. This is great!!! I have them here andthey are sooooooooo beautiful and have loved them since a child when dad built me a bluebird box and painted it a beautiful blue-green for me. ...I do have a problem maybe you can help me with. Last year, Easter morning I found pineneedles were sticking out about 1/3 of the entrance. By about 6pm at my return, it was 3/4 full of pineneedles. I will continue in next post.

The only way you can have bluebirds is not have any house sparrows around......and then.....do what she suggests.

Once you started putting out meal worms how long did it take for you to start seeing blue birds

I started noticing a few blue birds in my neighborhood last spring. By summer, and by using the worms, I had attracted a few to the outskirts of my yard. After hanging a box and continuing to put out worms, they were coming into the yard. Just today, I have noticed a pair hanging out around the box and even going in and out of it. I am so hopeful for a full-time tenant this spring! And babies!

Maybe you don’t mean earthworms , I do know from research that they don’t eat earthworms nor should they be fed earthworms . They are not equipped to do jest them properly and can become sick

@truthgha wrens are notorious for building on top of other nests in enclosures. There has even been evidence of dead birds beneath their nests due to the wrens being so persistent. Put a smaller hole( unsure of the diameter ) over the existing hole. This will stop the problem entirely.

I have bluebirds visiting for the first time, but the mealworms are attracting flocks of starlings and they're chasing away the bluebird!! How do I krep those starlings.from eating all the mealworms and chasing my bluebirds off.

How do you keep the squirrels and chipmunks away from the worm trays and house?

Feed them whole dried peanuts in the shell, away from the nest boxes.

I had bluebirds hanging around and putting mealworms out backfired. The starlings started eating them all and chased the bluebirds away from my boxes before they even found my mealworms. The rest cooked in the sun. How do you keep the starlings from taking over the worms?

@@uhill74 Check out the bluebird mealworm feeders that look like a regular hopper feeder but allow access only through an entrance hole. A 1-1/2" hole, like on a nest box, supposedly excludes starlings, which need at least 1-5/8" to enter. I"m going to use a hole that's a bit smaller and enlarge by a hair if necessary. I have yet to have starling problems here in the Florida panhandle, but who knows if that will last.

You are more likely to get them with live mealworms , healthier also . The baby bluebirds need the fluid from the live ones and can be a lifesaver (any live bug that bluebirds eat ) when it’s hot out and they need the fluid. Check out Marks backyard birds and search bluebirds. He has wildlife-science degree. Be careful getting answers from people who are not knowledgeable, even the bluebird society would be good . I have a second nesting pair but unfortunately they didn’t go after our mealworms but I haven’t tried enough probably

Thanks Carol I will be buying some meal worms. I have lived in Mid-Missouri for 5 years & this is my 1st year of bluebirds by MY house though perhaps they were at the neighbors(my sister that passed away last March). They have also nested here in a very unusual place, check out my video.....I am so hoping they are nesting here so I can help populate the breed.

I think a Cat or two, moved in your area, and The Pair of Bluebirds panicked. Remove cats, or you may not have Bluebrds at all. Cats ARE the most largest threat to all Birds. Best of luck this year to you!!

Someone told me a snake may have gotten in the box and messed up the nest to rob the eggs. Curiousity got the best of me and pulled the pineneedles out to find 4 beautiful eggs. What was going on? do you know? I had trouble with wrens putting sticks in the box to keep the bluebirds from building. I got rid of the wrens, reading to keep their nesting away. But could not figure this out.

I catch the house sparrows and use them as catfish bate. U hook them through the neck and they squirm around attracting the largest fish. Bluebirds like my yard.
