For those living in the middle of nowhere and facing a prospect of frequent blackouts (most of Europe this winter probably?), a cheaper solution for home back ups would be getting a huge truck battery, an inverter, and a small trickle charger to top it up when you have power. E.g. a 12v 240ah Bosch battery would cost you around $350. Add $50 for a charger and another $100 for a simple but decent 1-3 kW inverter. These $500 will get you almost 3 kWh of energy, 6 times larger than this device and you will be able to power many more devices simultaneously. On the negative side - it is going to be heavy. The battery alone would weigh 60kg+. You will not want to completely drain it either, as car (truck) batteries degrade in the extreme if drained below 10.5V. Realistic safe long term use would be in the region of 1.5 kWh, half of the maximum volume. But you "could" drain it completely in an emergency if you wanted (and instantly degrade it by up to 5%,, whereas safe operation would be in the region of

This is how I do it in South Africa. We have planned power outages of two hours for two or three times a day due to government incompetence and corruption. I got myself a 300 watt inverter, and I use my car's battery. This is just to power the TV, dish, phone and one light. Easily does this for two hours, and then my battery reads 11,6/11,9 volts. Haven't had any problems with the lead acid battery. I charge it immediately after use, and never discharge below 50 %. This whole setup cost about 50$ Aussie. And the inverter box has a built in charger as well. So, ten times cheaper than the bluetti, but gets you online. I could upgrade my battery to a bigger one, possibly a lithium ion one ☺

268Wh would be apx 22Ah @ 12V... And since you shouldn't use more than 50% of the capacity of a lead acid battery on a regular basis, this thing is a bit like having a 44Ah 12V SLA and inverter in a box that weighs a lot less. Cool device.

Can I charge my ebike 48V 20 ah lion battery off of one charge? My emountain board 12 s 5 p lion battery unknown voltage? Can I input my wind generator that has a usb C out put with an adapter? i.e. wind and solar at the same time? Jcar doesn't sell the bluetti solar panels but in Ideal conditions how long will any 200w solar panels take to charge it? I want to Ebikepack and Eskatepack out bush, charge either plus my phone and earbuds. I'll take a trailer on the bike to pull the battery, panels, eskate, lightweight wind generator and lightweight shelter. I am interested in a suitable water, fire and theft proof container for all of this that will fit on my bike trailer. Am I dreaming in LaLa land or is this doable? No car, no hotel charging. Completely off grid nomadic lifestyle. The Bluetti website help is A.I. bullshit. The people at Jcar are just sales assistants and know nothing. I know this is not your cup of tea so if you could send me to anywhere else that could answer any of these questions that would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to be under batteried or over batteried cause I can only afford to do this once with my long service payout.

First thought after plugging in... damn perfect. Bought to free camp, but still run a computer monitor and charge phone and a laptop. Impressed that the monitor only draws 27w and I'll get plenty of juice to keep that on for work all day, especially since I'll run 12v charge back in at the same time and the van battery gets topped up with solar too. Yeah, could have bought an inverter for half the cost, but ive just boosted my stored power and options for charging the gadgets up, plus i can pick it up and take it anywhere i need it. Hey, it is also way smaller than i thought... yep, super impressed, thanks John.

I bought mine about a month ago and I love it. It’s excellent for what I personally use it for. I’m an amateur astrophotographer and I needed a 12V power station that would power all of my astrophotography rig for an entire night of imaging. I’ve been to my favourite dark sky site out at Harden NSW for a weekend camping trip where I spend 2 nights imaging the night sky in some of the darkest skies in Australia. In the day I’ll just plug the eb3a into my 200W solar panel array and it fully charges in less than 2 hours and it’s ready for the next night of imaging. The eb3a would have been better if it had an expansion port for say a 500wh expansion battery to triple its output, just like the eb55 but smaller, cheaper and lighter. That’s my only gripe. I think that was a missed opportunity by BLUETTI.

I have an Ecoflow Delta Max running my camper, fantastic bit of kit despite the older battery tech. Considered the equivalent Bluetti with the Lifepo4 batteries but the Ecoflow worked better ergonomically for my use and they have a better reputation for reliability than Bluetti. Ecoflow are now slowly switching to Lifepo4 so I’ll upgrade at some point in the future. All these ‘all in one’ battery boxes have advantages over a built in vehicle system, they are convenient, easy to use, take up less space than a built in system, but their big con is if one small component breaks the whole thing is done. Far easier to MacGyver a work around on a built in system than on these sealed boxes( but it an be done)

I agree with something you said in a review of the ac200p and that it would be nice if these units included some capability for a jump starter. @@Matthias_Fischer Don't do it then. The idea was not a sole purpose suggestion, it would be good to have a lightweight separate source of power in the car, and I like the idea it can be taken out on occasion to charge it up separately without driving around.
@steaksbeers
2 жыл бұрын
@@Matthias_Fischer In this universe the cost of the unit is insignificant to me, much like these comments you care to make. Feel free to make your own decisions, but I like the product and generally have interest, so why do you care what I spend my money on. I have loads of disposable mortgage-free income that I typically spend on drinking and gambling, the rest of which is just wasted. This would be good in the car as a backup, if I’m home and the power goes out (my last outage was 12 hours), my car will be downstairs and I can bring the power station upstairs. If I’m out and about and I need to detach power from the car I can take the power station out. I see a purpose that it might be suitable to run my dashcam longer term than the power bank I’m currently using for the same reason, with exception of having access to the footage remotely. Also as seen on some other reviews this runs as UPS, which might be good for running my home security setup and 5G home internet so in the event of power outage I can still monitor and access footage, so who knows, I may even buy more than one and the cost won’t be an issue. Are you are jealous I can spend money on toys without any real concern of how much it costs?

@Slavery is Freedom, War is Peace I am not sure how do you approximate 600w to 20 to 30 minutes when 800w is 10 minutes. It does not work like that. If you 800w will boil (how much?) water in 10 minutes, the 600w will boil the same amount, not taking loses into account, in about 33% more so like 13 minutes. But that's not how it goes because I do not have a 800w comparison to make. The 12v kettle I can find takes 120w. 120w compared to 600w, it's a 5x jump, not to mention that I don't have to keep my engine running for that time and I can just enjoy the silence :) More than that, if there is a long blackout and my central heating UPS is discharged, I can power the central heater with this for a lot of time. It's a gas heater so it uses power just for electronics and a pump, that is about 30w when the pump is working and 10w when the pump is off. So yeah, it's not just a really expensive way to make some tea, it's a useful thing to have around the house and on the road. I'm just dissapointed in the lack of 12v car cable, I will most likely make one myself.

I purchased the EB55 after John's previous review, and I can attest that these Bluetti units are really excellent. Mine is ~537 watt hours of juice. My wife's daughter took it camping for a week where they didn't have any nearby power, and it kept her (and everybody else's) phones recharged for a week, and the light was helpful too: she loved it. Then last week during the crazy heatwave here in Southern California, an underground power cable blew up and we were without power for 9 hours in 100F (38C) temps, and it was no fun. Obviously not going to run the A/C on the Bluetti, but I was able to "top off" the refrigerator to keep it cold, and the inverter just hummed along doing its job. The LED panel on the back was super helpful: kept in the middle of the house so we could all see where we were going. I had a half-charged 12V car battery in my garage, and was able to use that to feed *into* the EB55 to keep the Bluetti topped off as well. The flexibility of input and output on the EB55 is just fantastic, and it comes with all the cables and accessories necessary: the power brick (of course), a 12v charging cable to top the Bluetti off from a cigarette lighter socket, several solar-panel related cables. All included. It's clear that it was designed with real-life in mind. Then at bedtime, hooked up both my CPAP machine plus a fan, and this was a lifesaver (not quite literally) to be able to get some sleep. It was hot and stuffy, and we'd never have been able to sleep without some moving air. Batteries all ran out at about 5:30 AM just as I was about to get up. There's a fair point about whether these are too expensive or not: I don't really know, but in my mind the build quality and usability are so good that it just takes a worry off, and I'm willing to pay for that quality than risk it on something cheaper that may not do the job. You'd hate to find out limitations when the power goes out. My experience with the EB55 is so good that I'm looking at one of Bluetti's higher end house backup units + the solar thing. I know there's another brand (Eco****) that's in the same space that's also well regarded, and Dave Jones at EEVBlog has done a teardown of that, but I'm sticking with Bluetti just because I know what I'm getting. Very, very highly recommended, and I'm grateful to John for the introduction.

It's a shame this product is such a half-baked prototype posing as production ready. In my experience, the AC inverter is hypersensitive to loads and will happily shut off, even if your load never hits anywhere near the rating of the inverter. The 1200W surge mode is disabled by default and when enabled, you lose the sine wave output. You're also highly discouraged by Bluetti from connecting anything other than resistive loads when that mode is active or risk damaging the device and/or inverter. I also found that the advertised "UPS Mode" where power is supposed to be passed from the AC input straight through to the outlets randomly shuts off, utterly defeating the "UPS" purpose. Overall, it's a neat concept but it needs some more QA before general use.

John, do you have an opinion on Bluetti's questionable marketing practices? They advertise on their Australian marketing material in USD, making their products look far more affordable than they are.

I have not the slightest interest in his ads for batteries, torches or whatever else he is pushing. His car posts I like. This I don't!!!

$19 for the cable. It’s also less efficient than using a solar panel so likely not worth having.

@@ihateexcessivelylongandpoi4490 I don't want to pay $20 more so you get yours, why make something 90% of people won't need included and increase the sell price for everyone? It's wasteful.
