@@gilly_axolotlgenuine question, how do we know that it is or isn't a hyperfixation
@gilly_axolotl
10 ай бұрын
@@OReily08080 so hyperfixation is similar in a way to special interests in the fact that the involve "obsession", but that's about it. Hyperfixation in ADHD is when someone is working on a specific project/task of theirs that they have an intense need to solve or finish, and will either forget or refuse to listen to body signals like hunger or needing to pee in order to get it done without any distraction. A lot of people refer to this as hyperfocus but hyperfixate is also a correct term that refers to that. Special interest is used for both autism and ADHD and indicates wanting to absorb everything about an external interest that provides great satisfaction. The interest tends to stay on the mind, meaning people with special interests will reference them at seemingly random times, but to the neurodivergent person, it just makes sense to reference it. A lot of times, people with adhd will have some special interests be in shorter bursts than those with autism, but both are considered special interests nonetheless, because of the intensity of the fascination. Source: I am incredibly researched in ADHD and the shared symptoms between ADHD and autism. I am currently self taught, psychology has been a special interest of mine for years and I soon plan on going into a masters degree program for a mental health field. :)

@@gilly_axolotl as someone with diagnosed adhd since childhood, you are 100% correct on the definitions! For me my special interests tend to come full circle, one month I’m completely invested in a cartoon, the next month or may be Abbott elementary, the next month it may be a KZitemr, and it usually goes on like that but I tend to gravitate back to the same special interests every few months, they just rotate in and out naturally.

Yes teachers do do this to try to encourage and engage students into the lesson plan… but look at the ages ofc this would work more so than not compared to older kids. When it comes to older kids this wouldn’t work as effectively. Even so with younger kids… this is a tv show… just bc it works one time or with a few kids doesn’t mean it works all the time or with every kid. This show has shown that so I don’t know why y’all are getting amped up over someone saying this this going to work all the time. Everyone is right on this topic. @@LiamSFG405 The teacher did the right thing. Rather than trying to punish the child he tried to encourage him to learn by introducing something he loves. It's a literal win win. The teacher is able to engage with the child, and the child stops being disruptive and starts to pay attention. Not everything should be a "My way or the Highway." I'd rather have a teacher who is able to work with children and help them succeed than a teacher who pushes them away. It's not about you and how you feel, it's about helping kids learn, and not all children are good with sitting still at lectures.
