One thing I just did to mine for guides was use a wing divider and mark out 1/8, 3 1/16, etc marks off needle centerpoint. Used a wing divider to initial mark and then went back over with a scratch awl to deepen the lines a bit so they were easier to see. I'm currently toying with ways to magnetically attach a physical guide that can be set to whatever edge distance. A neodymium magnet works well to guide the piece, but I was having problems with it lifting up the shuttle/bobbin even through the foot plate.... so something else will have to be come up with :P I think for now, just a 90 degree bracket h eld on with the magnet further back. PLace edge of bracket to desired line... etc.

Hi Bob, great video. I’m also here in Raleigh and have run into a problem with my machine while trying to stitch multiple overlayed layers of leather on a guitar strap. It’s about 7mm thick and it causes my needle to miss the hole in the arm as well as shortening my stitch length. What is the thickest leather you’ve been able to see with the shoe patcher? And if you’ve had success, what size need do you recommend? I’m using #69 bonded nylon thread. Thanks for any advice you might have.

This is a variation on a Bradbury patcher. You can also find those for sale, they are beautiful looking machines in some cases, and I know people who have them and find they sew better than the Singer. I have a good condition singer, but would buy a Bradbury if I could find one in my area. Important to use leather needles, as you know. They make the machine work a lot better. One might not think so since when you run the machine without thread, the regular or leather needles, both punch through the leather pretty well, but odly, the thread will not feed so well. Also remember guys, that if you run a machine with a 15 needle, there is a limit to how well that needle can tension your thread. The needle is drawing on the thread. you can have a machine that will punch but if the needle can't pull, you can't really handle the material as you would wish.

@deankay4434

If your stitch is sideways of slightly twisted on long stitches, check this out first before removing the pressor foot. First, place a folded plastic bag under the pressor foot, lower the foot. Do not rotate hand wheel, just tug on the plastic front & rear to create marks. Remove and look for a pattern of teeth marks. Mine was on the right side and not touching the left, so removed it and went to the bench vise. I placed in on the very edge of the jaws to allow a magnetic torpedo level on the vertical, locked it down. Now, move the level to the top, across the serrated feet of the pressor foot to check for level. Mine was high on the side that did not leave marks. Since you can flat file it to reduce markings, it is not hardened steel this means it will bend. I used a "Cresent" wrench or adjustable wrench to tightly grab both feet equally. I lifted the wrench a little (Remember the direction to go first / use a piece of masking tape on problem "Low" side) Re-check with level. Adjust again as needed but slightly. Once level and it had not moved in the vise, I put it back on the machine and tried it again. It sews straight now...YEH!!! This is how you DO it! A huh, a huh.

I sold this machine a long time ago...I was waiting for a 29-4 to get rehabed....used the 29-4 and then stumbled on to a vintage Adler 30-1 made pre-WWII...got it rehabed and now use it in my shop...awesome machine with a 16" arm.... The Chinese machines are very hard to keep in time unless you have experience with the patcher sewing mechanical design and how they sew....OR, you are wanting to teach yourself. As I said in the video, they are very rough when you first receive it...you must clean it, smooth up at the parts. keep it well oiled and most of all, learn how to adjust the upper and lower tensions along with winding tight bobbins. Good luck!

I will definitely keep that in mind but my machine seems to work quite well. I think they probably all differ a tiny bit from each other when they are manufactured. I modified my needle bar to use 135/34 type 180/24 leather needles and 207 thread. Works great but tension is tricky to arrive at and I cannot use the bobbin tension spring with this big thread. Simply bypassed the little spring. Largest needle I could use with the standard patcher, before mods, was the 15x1 140/22 and 138 thread. The needle bar mod is not too hard to do, from info on the Facebook patcher page. One issue is the bigger the thread, the less the bobbin holds.

@PKriger
8 жыл бұрын
These problems are due to incorrect threading. If it is "all loose on the bottom", then there is not enough tension from the top. Don't adjust tension knob until you check that the thread is routed correctly AND that the threading plates are pinching the thread and holding traction (very important). Loose tension can also make it difficult to pick up the bobbin thread.

Winston...I you are wanting what you are calling "heavy needles" for sewing with wax thread with a Chinese made shoe patch machine, you are "barking up the wrong tree". Regardless, of the sewing machine type, you can't machine sew with waxed thread. Waxed thread is for hand sewing. Go on to the Tandyleather.com website, or visit one of the stores and you'll find the needles. You can look on Ebay too. Have you every used a Speedy Stitcher? Good Luck!

It is a knock-off of an original American patented machine of the 1850's. I don't think it was a Singer, but Singer did make their own version. The patent has long expired, so they are making them in China. Theyare sold "in the rough" with zero finish work to keep the price low. Fun project, some say frustrating, and can be a very effective tool. Smoothing and polishing makes them a practical addition to any bench top for small projects.
