I was fourteen in 1980, and for the previous five years' time I had owned Queen 1, 2, Sheer Heart Attack, Night & Day, News Of The World, Jazz and The Game. And up here in Seattle i would lock myself up in my room with these vinyl albums (as well as my Zeppelin and Who LPs) and learn all that i could by ear - there was certainly no internet and not even tablature for Queen, Zeppelin or Who songs - and i wouldn't have utilized that rubbish even if it had been available because I'd learned the absolute pleasure of using my ear to tune my guitar to the LP i wanted to learn from, and then I'd "ear out" tunes like Tenement Funster, Ogre Battle, Keep Yourself Alive, Rock n Roll, Custard Pie, Ten Years Gone, and everything i could from Live At Leeds AND Deep Purple's Made In Japan - and so many others. Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield's East West album, Super Sessions, the Beano album... After seeing Queen in early '80 here at the old Seattle Center Coliseum ... Which was something I'd never, ever expected at all... Procession, then the lifting of the Pizza Oven lighting rig, opening with Dead On Time and Let Me Entertain You, etc... My young mind was blown. But even at that young age, i was ultra sensitive to songs like Lily Of The Valley, Love Of My Life, Good Company, etc... i just couldn't believe what i had just witnessed... my best friend, Mark Renstrum, and i were hanging out by the backstage door when John, Roger, and Freddie all ran out and jumped into their own limos and roared off. But a few minutes later Brian and a very large minder (you'd recognize him if you've looked closely at enough old Queen photo's), they both walked you to a small group of about six of us and Brian quietly said hello to every one and signed his name for us all (BRAD NEILINS, I WANT MY BRIAN MAY AUTOGRAPH BACK. You've had it for over forty five years now. It WASN'T a gift). Sorry... and i just couldn't believe that he, Brian, was standing there right next to me. Best night of my life. I went on as a teenager to have an utterly successful failure of a go at becoming a successful guitarist in many bands... at fifty seven i still play and it's the mainstay of my life... music. Queen. Thank you for listening.

Enjoy your new guitar.....i got one last year...i had a burns one it was ok i suppose...but let it go...the new Brian may ones are a big improvement on the burns...it has a Wilkinson trem...far better tremolo than the generic strat one found on the Burns....you can even dive bomb and it stays in tune....proper high quality authentic alloy volume and tone...and authentic look pickgaurd at bridge...the neck on these is flawless..lovely and fat...almost like a 50s les paul junior......that said the burns had a more jet black ebony board but I Don't mind the ever so slight streaks...let face it its purely cosmetic even high priced Taylor acoustics use ebony like this as an environmental management thing....im assuming it'll get nicer with each year of playing in.....i put a little bit of lemon oil on mine and it came up gorgeous....i personally think that its amazing such a high quality guitar be made available to the average player....so a massive thanks to Brian may....imagine if he'd let gibson USA get its greedy little hands on the project..itd cost 4 times as much and probably have quality control issues to boot..lol...its such a great guitar....the best bargain since the Mexico made baja telecaster ...it plays so easy and slinky that when I pick up my gibson les paul junior afterwards its like playing a acoustic ...that said I'm considering putting a set of 10s on as I like to work a bit...although that wouldn't probably fit in with the Brian may light string vibe...anyway you hit the nail on the head when you said "just buy one"....check out dave Simpsons glowing review of his...

Nice guitar! 1.- How do you feel the frets? 2. - Did you notice a big difference between a "normal" neck compared to the neck of this guitar ? 3.- Is it really lightweight ? 4.-Are you agree with the opinion that this guitar is a very high quality guitar at a low price? Sorry to make a lot of questions ( I really want to know more about this guitar before I can purchase it )
@awaywithpaul3423
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, thanks for watching, here are my answers: 1. The frets are no different to any other guitar in my experience, I found no areas of difficulty at all. 2. I was expecting the neck to be thinner and smaller but in fact it felt a little wider to me. I’d always assumed it was small for some reason (perhaps when I’ve watched Dr May play. It’s very comfortable and I have fat fingers too! 3. I wouldn’t say it’s lightweight but it’s certainly not heavy like a les Paul. It feels good and solid but the chambered body makes it very easy on the shoulder. 4. I would wholeheartedly agree it’s a very high quality guitar. I was lucky enough to receive a small gift from a dear friend who passed away and which enabled me to buy the guitar as I wouldn’t be able to afford it otherwise (hence I’ve named it Mabel) and I’d always wanted this guitar. One thing I would say to anyone though is don’t expect to sound like Brian May when you buy it. I was aware of this thankfully, but you really need to factor in the amp and booster pedal (and the sixpence) to really nail that sound. It is a beautiful guitar however and I’m really pleased with it. It feels lovely to play, is well made and of a very high quality. I would recommend it to anyone. Re: the “Brian sound” I have the AmpliTube app on iPad which not only gives the tones but also shows the various settings used to get the tones. I also referred to the Red special forums for a guide on which combinations are used for which sounds. Have fun Alex 👍

Please make a video playing the guitar! 1. Do you experience notes choking on bendings ? I've heard that happens on such round fretboards 2. Is it hard to fit the fingers in the high frets cause of the very short scale ? Thanks in advance
@awaywithpaul3423
4 жыл бұрын
Dee Kay hi Dee, I’ll try and do a video but in answer to your questions: 1. No choking that I’ve noticed, in fact the bends are really expressive possibly due to the slightly shorter scale 2. I do have fat fingers and yes I have noticed it’s a little harder, but certainly nothing to cause alarm. It’s not noticeably shorter but the slightly shortened scale makes bending much more expressive and I find it easier to get full bends in. Has taken time but the semitones bends are also impressive. The only area I’ve found difficult is when playing the We Are the Champions chorus and I try to hit the fourth fret on the second string (after he sings ...the end) I find I keep missing it as it’s not where it is on other guitars if that makes sense, but am finding it easier as I practice

How do you get on with playing it when sitting down? I find the 'space hopper' shape of the guitar body is not very ergonomic. The waist is too far forward, which pushes the guitar back and makes the neck feel even shorter. Playing standing up is no problem. That's why I prefer the telecaster body shape.

Hi Paul, I have only just recently come across this guitar. I was watching a tutorial on youtube of a song and noticed a guy playing it, I had no idea Brian had these guitars for sale. I’ve been tossing and turning on whether to buy one or not. I’m more of a rythem guitar player than a lead. Just wanting to know if it’d be worth me buying it. I’m a huge Queen fan and having a Brian May guitar to my collection would be absolute! My Dad has a Richie Sambora ESP SA2 which are rare now, and I want to add Brian’s to the household. How does it sound and what kind of pickup’s are used? Thanks, Lauren!
@awaywithpaul3423
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lauren, thanks for watching the video I really appreciate it 👍 I’m a little biased as I love the guitar so bear that in mind 😊. I think it’s a fabulous guitar for rhythm playing, mainly due to the beautiful build quality and gorgeous neck. It really plays a dream and is incredibly versatile as you have three pick ups which can be played in multiple combinations not normally available on guitars, add that to the ability to switch these in and out of phase and you get a fair few (13 I think) different pick up combinations. What I also like is the really stable tuning even when you use the tremolo which is so delicate.. you can have really subtle shimmers with the tremolo too it’s another unique feature which creates a lot of colour. One thing I will say is I have yet to achieve the Brian May sound ( I can with the AmpliTube bundle though) but that is not an issue as it can achieve everything from heavy Rock to jangly rhythms. Hope that is of some help, love to see your dads Richie Sambora guitar, do you have any footage of it online? I bet that is a dream to play too. I’ve also got a Steve Vai Jem Jr in yellow which I adore. Happy playing and let me know if you decide to buy.. ( check the Brian May guitar store too as they often have nice deals) 👍👍

It’s alright to biased as I get like that too when it’s something you really love. I had a little look on KZitem for the sounds the guitar has, and it sounds beautiful! Someone wasn’t playing any Queen songs on it, so it was good to hear what it sounds like naturally. I don’t have any videos of my Dad’s Richie on here yet, but hopefully one day I can ask him if I can get it out and have a little tinker with it and film it for KZitem 😊

Hey :) I’ve been playing the very same guitar for 1 1/2 years now- I use it for basically anything. It’s by far the best in my opinion. I also have a fender strat and a squier Tele, along my Yamaha acoustic guitar. I feel like the best sound is achieved by a vox ac 30. I’ve been using an old fender amp from 1968 but it sounded too clean. I used a Marshall and it was too noisy. But that guitar really is a dream to play with. The only downside might be that the neck is quite thick. I have pretty long fingers so it fits me quite well, fender is a little too slim for me, but if you don’t like thick necks it might not be the right guitar for you

Alexandros Roussos hi Alexandros! Lovely to hear from you, hope all is well in beautiful Greece.. what a wonderful country! Very happy to answer your questions: 1. The neck is as easy to play as a Fender for sure, absolutely no worries there my friend. 2. I’m going to be honest here and say no you can’t get the sounds of Brian May just like that I’m afraid. You do need extra (expensive) kit which I haven’t got. You will need a Vox AC30 amp, and a treble booster pedal (Brian May guitars sell one for about £200), and of course the infamous sixpence instead of a plectrum. You can get some great sounds from it so don’t worry about that, and I have an iPad with the AmpliTube app which has a Brian May bundle which gives the sounds perfectly, but I think it’s best to be truthful and say you are not going to sound like him with the guitar alone. Saying that you can get pretty near and the guitar is a beautiful instrument so I’d still recommend it. Thanks for watching the video and give my love to your wonderful country, I hope to get back there on holiday once this crazy virus is under control. 🙏

Hi! I don't know if you read this comment after 1 year, but: Do you think it's the best guitar for all genres? I'm searching a guitar for playing diffrent genres or bands (Beatles, AC/DC, Queen and other Hard Rock, Classic Rock etc. maybe Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix and many others). I think I'll buy the Fender Player Series HSS Strat OR the Red Special. What do you think is the best choice for me? @awaywithpaul3423

Hi Jason, that’s a really tough question to answer as the “best” guitar for you is the one you enjoy playing the most. It’s certainly versatile as you can have so many variations of pick up settings, and I personally find it hugely enjoyable to play. Having said that I do have other guitars that I enjoy playing too. If you have one nearby I’d recommend visiting a guitar shop and getting a feel for what type of guitar you enjoy playing.. necks feel different for example and the weight of the guitar will also matter if you are of small build. Would I recommend a red special? Hell yeah! It’s gorgeous to play, but is it the best? That depends on what works for you. One thing I would say is that there was a video on KZitem and on the BMG guitars site of a bloke playing all different styles on a red special and it’s really useful re: the sounds you can get which included all the ones you listed.
