Just came across this video, I had the same problem with condensation build up in headlight,got new bulb and ignitor first and still no light working, then followed your video,got the control unit and it works now, thanks for your very useful information, saved a bunch just before service and MOT time.

I have finally and slowly been able to work my way through your video and I bought the unit from amazon that you advised and it works!!! Three garages I have taken this to and they havent been able to solve it. Told the control unit would cost me over £700 and that I needed to replace both sealed unit headlights at about £1000 each. The MOT had expired so I couldnt even drive the car as I couldnt get it MOT'd. The light is now working so I can get it MOT'd and on the road again. You have saved me so much money and solved so many problems! I owe you many many pints!!!. I have also thanked you on Bimmerforums.

Your a Godsend, no way I would be able to tackle these issues without your thorough videos. I'm headed out the door to tackle the controller as you call it. Others call it the ballast. The starter/igniter and bulb have already been replaced and still no light.

So underrated is the e63 / e64 Bmw. Already a future classic in my opinion, when you see one you instantly know its a special BMW not like todays where they all look the same. Buy one of these now if you can keep them on the road, I can only see the price going upwards for these in the very near future. Great video as always Tim 👍

Perfect. When the bulb and ballast are not the problem this is the next step. Pulling the bumper out, but not off, allows for a faster repair. The wires inside the fixture were falling apart due to heat damage combined with cheap insulation. With the replacement of the control unit and new insulation on the wires everything is working perfectly again. For the rest of my comments please see 1981pablohoney below. THANK YOU!!!!!😊☺😁🤠🥳😎

Hi Timm. Thank you for this really useful video. Worth noting that your method also gives access to the PDC sensors in the front bumper. It enabled me to swap out my middle left sensor that was not working. Unfortunately, the sensor still does not work so I'm thinking it must be a wiring issue!... unless you have any other ideas?!

Hello Tim, I noticed you said the module was damaged by water. I had a similar situation on my e90. I got water in my trunk from a bad tail light seal. I had noticed because my sound system had shut off. I found my factory hi fi amp in a pool of water. So I removed it and opened it and used this product called CRC electronic connector cleaner. Connected it back and it started working again. Great product, even used on my phone that fell into a swimming pool, and it worked. Just a suggestion if you ever run into water issues with electronics. Great Video 👍 and Thank you for the good info on the 650i. Noticed there’s not a lot of information support on the 650i compared to other models.

The two 8mm bolts that hold bumper to wing don’t undo them. Just pull the bumper forward as it slides forward out of the clip. Then it refits with a push in from the side on refitting saves loads of time and your hands. The ballast boxes have a seal on them just around the connection bit. Always great and helpful information

Hi Tim, since you have a lot of knowledge on these cars and the lights, I would like to know if they are switchable between RHD to LHD and visa verse. I didn’t find any info on the BMW forums and whether the beam is flat like the US market or whether it lights up the side of the road. Can you help answer this question and if they are not is there a way to mod them without replacing them - thx

19:45 and 22:29 Just a side note. I belive after some wiggling with the whole lamp (turning it up and down during ballast replacement) we can see a particle of a dirt (??) that popped up from somewhere inside of the lamp to the front. Somewhere from the back of the lamp probably. Nothing really serious here as the topic of the video is different. But I am not sure how difficult it would be later to get rid of that dirt particle (a dead leaf or else) after the whole lamp went back on car. Great video anyway! I hate working with liners as you have to crawl down there alot :)

What where the symptoms of the ballast(control unit) being the cause and not the xenon light bulb? I have the main beam working, but it seams after it being on for a while it drops out and does not come on until the lot has cooled off or so and the next day it will work again at first and then drop out again. .... and so on
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
Жыл бұрын
That sounds more like the bulb or the igniter behind it rather than the control unit
@ralfstahlmann5331
Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your advice. That would be an much easier option than taking of the front number to change the control unit. But I am surprised about you mentioning the igniter. I would have thought that it’s needed only to start the xenon bulb and not to keep it going. Do you have a video on this igniter and xenon bulb?

Hi Tim hope your keeping well, thanks for another great video, I noticed though I could be wrong that the top of the headlamp you removed seems to be missing a rubber strip that fits flush across the front edge of the headlamp? I only noticed as one side of my e63 645, that rubber has virtually perished in the middle section and on the other side its all there. Would love to know if you had any thoughts my friend

@@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation hi Tim, thank you, I agree it is awful, I was told by bmw parts that the bit of rubber is part of the headlamp so would have to change the whole headlamp for silly money, I was going to glue strip of neoprene back in there but can't see how that would make difference to anything 😀
