Great video, Sadel. I believe there’s a Klixon thermostat inside the clutch (or a Klixon-type that’s smaller in size) but once the JBE sets the trouble code, the thermostat doesn’t reset until the code is cleared (and promptly trips once the AC is turned back on). The Klixon devices are quite popular in motors, pumps and compressors due to their efficiency and small size. There is no better BMW expert than you, brother.

What a great video Sadel! Really good information and it is very important to follow the procedure and to know what are the specs. of what you are testing. I like that you always go a little deeper in your diagnosis. I like to know why it failed. Different ways to test components with BMW ah? Look like they go 10 years ahead of the other brands. Thanks again brother! Take care!

Yes it's always a little more work to go that deep, but I feel it makes one better to understand how things failed and why codes come up for what they do. BMW has always been very ahead of the curve, usually. Thank you for watching

Excellent as always, could be that that wire had partial shorted to ground on path between computer and clutch in some casies

yes, that can certainly be a possibility and throw the same code,

I remember older Mercedes units that would run until they would Lock up from the dryer exploding internally. That would plug everything!! Could a fan failure cause clutch failure due to pressure rise? Or does it still have a high side pressure switch? or just a worn clutch at a extended position possibly from high speed engagements on a depleted freon system causing clutch burn out. I think in the early 90s Buick started using a module for their push button unit in which had a flashing light safety mode to prevent compressor damage. Instead of just a high side switch, in case the pressure valve were to fail.

There is a pressure switch in this system for sure, and I would assume that if psi got too high it would stop the clutch from engaging.

So since that amperage spike is on the pwm wire, would that mean that the solenoid valve and/or swash plate in the compressor has failed?
@DTEAuto
2 жыл бұрын
This one actually has both a variable valve and a clutch, hence the 3 wire connector... 2 are for power and ground for the pwm of the variable solenoid, and the 3rd is for the clutch which will ground through the case. The high amperage spike was on the clutch activation wire, the computer "saw" the high amp and so it pulsed it for a quick short time to see if amp would go down. And since it didn't then it stops the pulsing of the clutch and shuts off supply to it and logs a code. The solenoid keeps getting controlled via pwm and is ok. So the issue is the clutch is shorted to ground , once the new one was installed the clutch amp is constant and not pulsed since its now at a safe level. Hope this helps

I have the same code. AC blows cold air but when it's hot outside, it stops blowing cold air. Did you figure out the problem?
