I'm sorry if this video got confusing! If your light switch has both of those button extension pieces, this job is as simple as trimming the plastic tabs off. If it only has one button extension piece like mine, you will either need to order a second one, or simple buy the Euro version of the light switch.

In the European Union it’s been a legal requirement for all cars built since 1980 to have rear “high intensity” (fog) lamps on the rear, driver’s side of the car. You’re only supposed to use them if the visibility is 100 metres/100 yards(ish) or less. I find it amazing that the you’re physically stopped from using the rear fog lamps, especially when you’re allowed front fog lamps! I’m sure that in places like Michigan you’ll need those rear fogs fairly often in the winter.

The problem with rear fog lights in the uk is people forgetting to turn them off when the fog has gone. In rain they are really dazzling and a pain in the butt if you’re following a car with them on when it’s raining. 🙄
@mr.matiss
4 жыл бұрын
Here in EU we don't like people using them because most of the time the fog or the snow blizzard is not that big but drivers still turn on their rear fog lights on although that is not necessary. Then you stand behind them on a red light and your eyes are frying because of the bright red light. So remember to turn them off and always watch car in a front and how far you can see their red lights. If it is at least 70 meters (~220 feet) than you are probably good to go without rear fog lights.

Bear in mind that whilst the LCM (light control module) is plug and play in that it will function, you will get a mileage tamper dot show up on your dash if you fit an LCM from a different car. This is because the mileage of the car is recorded in different places, and if these numbers don’t match, the car thinks the mileage has been tampered with. This could negatively impact resale value. The new LCM can be coded to the car however.

I had a first-generation Hyundai Santa Fe (not exciting I know) that, like all of them, came with rear fog lights in the bumper but the sockets were blocked off. Long story short I went to the great trouble to source an OEM rear fog light switch from the UK, have a friend program an Arduino board to control it just like they would have from the factory and knocked out the plugs. Waaaay more involved than this but still so worth it. I miss that car....

I used legos and filed them down to recreate that little button for my rear fog lights. Works like a charm

Love your channel brother... I check back every week. Did this mod on my 2006 BMW 330i Premium Sport model and love it! Ordered it on eBay and it arrived at my house fast from Europe. Thanks for all of your tips... the "OEM Plus" projects all go smoothly thanks to you!

I'm afraid the rear fog lights affect the eyes of the driver following you in fine weather and must be used strictly as directed i.e. under foggy weather

Ahh so that's why Americans cant be trusted with them

In some countries of Europe, just the left rear fog light is legal. Putting 2 rear fog lights may make other drivers think u r stopping... But I think it is a pretty good safety feature it should be available everywhere!

Hey Justin. thanks for the video. I was wondering why you didn't put in the Euro switch you purchased but you explained at the end. I wouldn't want to trade out the auto lights for the fog lights either, especially if you can have both! Although, I don't have a newer BMW, I have a 1995 525i, I love watching BMW videos, there is a lot of hidden things not enabled on the BMW, interesting huh? Good luck with the garage and the new house.

Justin, WAY COOL! I had coded my 2010 128i to use the rear fog lights as brake lights and as part of the welcome home lights. My car was a little different than yours in getting the switch assembly out of the dash, but I had both white button extensions. I still had to take the switch all apart to remove the blank button so that I could cut the tabs off, but much to my surprise, the new button works! Now I can turn on/off rear fog lights at will. There’s even an indicator in the instrument cluster that lights up that I didn’t know was there. (It doesn’t light up in the power-up self-test.) The only bummer is that the button won’t illuminate like the the other buttons and knobs (even if I had a Euro button cover) because there is no LED installed in the light switch circuit board. But I’m excited about having rear fogs. My previous car (a Jag) had them and I used them in dense fog and heavy downpours. One question: for the Euro light switch assembly that you bought, what are the controls on the left for?

Mandatory in most eu countries; for obvious reasons.. And people using two (left and right) and/or during rain should be fined, it's dangerous! Only the one on the driver side should be turned on when visibility is less than ~100m due to fog or snow.

1) Why do people post instructional videos with CRAP "music" playing while we are trying to hear and pay attention to the instructions? 2) If you have to order the Euro switch to get just one part, why would anyone in their right mind not just install the Euro switch as a whole and be done with it rather than dick around with a razor knife and the rest of the loose parts?

Couldn’t one simply run to pull a part, take one of the extensions from there and it would work?

Yes but the one that I purchased didn't have the Auto headlight function, so I mixed parts from both switches

I kept wondering why Carly was talking about coding for rear fog lights. Now I know. I will hard pass tho, no point.

I want the orange (amber) parking lights with intermittent side blinkers. Standard in the US, not allowed over here. I find amber turn signals on the rear disgusting. I love the red turn signals. Just saw an S5 with red turn signals. Love 'em.

Great video, I too converted mine, I just didn’t replace the button with one that has the icon. It’s the simple things like this that makes your car different, but erks the hell out of me that BMW didn’t include this function in all their cars. There’s some places in the states that gets really foggy especially on the east & west coast near the ocean. Congrats on the house, nooooooow that you have the garage we expect to see HELLA videos 😂.
