Do NOT rip your vapour barrier like this! I know the butyl seal is tough, but ripping a vapour barrier WILL cause your doors to leak. If ripped like this I'd put another buyl seal bead under it and press the foam on while carefully heating it with a heat gun. Do not underestimate these foam panels just because they look disposable.

Gonna do my E36 now it been creaking for years. Iv used heat on your vapour seals to peel them off nicely, if engine is warm 5 mins on full heat with door card off does it.

Are the door brakes interchangeable or are they specific for left & right side

Nicely done squire, can use a heat gun or hair dryer on the butyl holding the vapour seal, it'll peel off cleanly. Soundproofing project would be good video series, plenty of improvement possible on a 1 series.

I'm so sick if changing these almost on a daily basis in the dealership I'm working in at the moment no issues with them on my e60 and im surprised George had this issue on the 1 series

Same on my 1 series - fronts are good are both rears are completely shagged. On top of that fronts cost 16Eur a piece while rears cost 35Eur each...

@@GeorgeAusters It is not fine. I had two cars leaking from the door trim to the floor everytime there was a heavy rain and I had to fix exactly what you did. Instead of ripping it you should have cut the glue with a thin box cutter or another flexible knife.

BMW calls them a door brake, not a check strap, which kind of makes sense because they are not a strap

@@GeorgeAustersI was taught in my early days by Ford technicians and many others who also call them check straps I was trained on rovers so I have always called them that as they check the door so it doesn’t put pressure on hinges and a strap can be made from any material
@james_delahunt

Door brake is also correct terminology cuz we at Renault dacia call them door brake and it check strap it does act as a brake cuz without it stopping the door while opening it would do damage to the hinges and possibly in worse case scenario snap door off door brake sound even more accurate tbf than check strap
