The SOLUTION for the multifunction indicator issues, should be available later this week. I was asked by the manufacturer to wait until the new UK / EU website has been finished which should be a couple of days more. Most of my riding friends now want these lights on their bikes, so I'm going to be very busy over winter. Carl

Hi Carl I have a question about Servicing the esa suspension. Normale shocks and rear damper need a service with new oil. What do you think. When should we get Servicing our esa with new oil. I know a suspension shop in Netherlands which is able to do a service on the esa suspension with new oil, bushings and so on. My though is after 20.000km it's time to change the dirty oil. What do you think. Kind Regards. Gruß ;)
@justthewayitis
5 ай бұрын
Hi Melvin, it’s up to you really, but 20k km is not a lot. If everything is working correctly I would leave it alone and would wait another 20k km. But having said that, a service including new oil and seals does something bring benefits and you could at the same time change the rear spring to one that matches your weight. That would give you a shock that works correctly within the mid-stroke of the damper. Which would give you a better ride quality. But I would probably wait a while longer if everything is working correctly. Carl

Hello, great video. Are you saying that the level of Road damping changes with the mode even though the suspension is set the same? In other words if I am in road mode and change the suspension to dynamic, that dynamic damping is different than if I am in Dynamic and have the suspension set to dynamic. In short, are there different levels of Dynamic damping depending on the mode?
@justthewayitis
2 жыл бұрын
Hi TDK. There are Three main suspension damping modes. Road, Dynamic, Enduro. These are further enhanced depending on the ride mode you choose. Is there are difference between Road + Dynamic and Dynamic + Dynamic... yes but it's small. Is there a difference between Dynamic + Dynamic and Dynamic Pro + Dynamic, again yes but it's all in the sensor system controls which take into account the way and speed you ride. I'll try to clarify this more in the next episode.

Great explanation. I have a 2016 R1200rs. When in DYNAMIC mode only, for and rider + pillion suspension mode and 2 up, while riding I get an error triangle come up and the suspension goes very hard. I heard it could be return spring closing the damping down. My question is the problem the ESA control unit module or or the actual shock? which one to replace?
@justthewayitis
10 ай бұрын
Hello When the error triangle comes up and suspension goes firm that’s the bike going into safe mode or limp home mode on the suspension . The only way to be sure is to get the error code read by bmw or using an GS911 code reader. It is however a reported fault by other owners, but it could be the control unit or the shock it self. I’m presuming that when the error message comes up… if you stop the bike and turn it off and restart the message goes away? Best thing to do is get the error codes checked to see which system or part is failing . It could be a PWM output fail from the controller but only a specialist could confirm this. Hope this helps Carl

I haven’t read every single comment, so excuse me if I’ve missed it.. with regards to the suspension feel when braking, Eco vs Rain, does the automatic linking of the brakes not have an effect? I’m imagining that in Rain Mode, a tad more rear brake is applied in order to keep the bike more balanced and to optimise stopping ability. Just a thought 🤔
@justthewayitis
Жыл бұрын
Hi, with regards to brake balance within each ride mode, there are some differences, but with regards to suspension feel when braking this is controlled by various integrated systems like the IMU which provides more compression support when adding brakes fast. Your thoughts are probably correct 👍

I have just got my BMW R1250 GSA and only ridden once so far, I am 6 foot tall 13.5 stone weight, in Road mode and auto on the left suspension control, I'm flat footing parked on my drive but once I get going and have to stop at junctions or in traffic I'm on tip toe and can barely reach the ground, if there was a pot hole or lose gravel I wouldn't be able to hold the bike weight, surely at 6 foot tall I shouldn't be struggling to reach the ground? I know I can change the left setting to min but that shouldn't be necessary for all riding?
@justthewayitis
Жыл бұрын
Hello Rockout and welcome to the channel, try moving the seat from high to low it makes a big difference. I'm also 6ft but 92kg (14.5 stone) I change my seat position fairly regularly, if I'm two up or ride on gravel then it's the lower setting, if it's a longer trip I prefer the higher position even though I then just have the balls of my feet on the ground. Let me now if this helps. Also I presume you dont have the sports suspension option installed as that is higher than the normal GS and GSA Best wishes Carl
@Rockout52
Жыл бұрын
@@justthewayitis Hi Carl, yes I already removed the seat and put it on the lower setting and that's me on tip toe, I'm not sure about the sports suspension, I bought it second hand from the Bristol BMW Motorrad showroom, it is a GSA Rallye TE with all options on and comfort pack. I have not tried the min option on the left hand controls yet, but it should be enough for normal one up no luggage road riding, then try auto when loaded up. It's been abysmal rain and wind every day since the bike arrived, I've only been out the once, I would prefer to get used to it in dry conditions at least to get it set up for longer any weather rides, supposed to improve after tomorrow for a few days so I will get out again and try the min setting and let you know how I get on, thanks for response, Brian.
@justthewayitis
Жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, well I wish you luck with the weather improving and getting some miles on your GSA, do check the suspension option with the supplying dealer or your paper work, as the sport is 20mm taller (I think) than the standard version which would account for the height difference you mention. Fyi, lots of owners do run their bikes in Preload MIN and it shouldn't be any issues. Have fun 👍Carl

Hi Carl, Thank you for your detailed explanation of the ESA system. I now feel confident making changes to the system when I'm out riding. I had a question. I ask this question here because a lot of peple on forums say that this issue is just part of the ESA making micro adjustments as I'm riding. I'm just not sure. The issue is the feeling of tapping in the footpegs. I don't feel it in the engine or frame, only when feet are on the footpegs. It happens on pavement with slight to moderate imperfections and on roads with tar snakes. On a new road with no imperfections, I hardly ever feel the tapping. Even though I see this complaint on forums from time to time, it still concerns me. I mentioned this to my dealer at my first service, They test rode the bike and said that they didn't notice anyhting, but I think the problem there is that all the rodes in that area are in very good shape with little or no imperfections. Have you heard of this and do you know what it imight be since many people think it's part of the ESA system? Thank, Kenneth
@justthewayitis
Жыл бұрын
Hi Kenneth good morning Yes I know exactly what sound you mean, but I have not been able to find the source of it. Mine has got better (less tapping) as the mileage has increased and also since I changed the tyres, but it’s still there. It feels like front suspension to me possibly from the telelever area. I hope you enjoy the series and have fun on your new bike… best wishes Carl

Is it safe to run full load on min suspension setting
@justthewayitis
3 ай бұрын
Hi Austin, if you mean loading the bike close to its max capacity, my personal opinion would be no you are better off running in Auto mode. Mainly due to poor load distribution (heavy rear bias) which will affect the handling and braking and stability. Have a good weekend Carl

Hi Carl, thanks for creating great contents and these nice videos on ESA. My bike has former ESA (it´s a 2009-R1200 RT) and I´m a bit confused. I´d like to know if it is possible to associate the three suspension modes (I think they are damping/rebound settings, right?) on my ESA (Comfort, Normal and Sporty) with the Road, Rain and Dynamic on the new ESA. Can you help me?

Exceptional job sir! I have been a Medevac and Rescue Helicopter pilot for over 34 years now and I am amazed at the similarity of the stability systems on my 2022 BMWR1250GSA and my Augusta 119 helicopter! Your explanation, physical demonstrations (stick and tennis balls) paint a vivid picture...you would make an excellent helicopter instructor! I have been trying to get my head rapped around the differences of my new GSA and my trusty old 2003 GS1150, and you again did a great job building that picture for me. Thank you.

Hello Carl. I just acquired a BMW R1250 GS Adventure 40th year edition back in June of 2022. Haven't even drilled down to much on the options available you've explained here as I've been fussing with 3 other bikes I've just added as I'm a new rider at 72 years playing "catch up" with riding here in the heartland of the USA. Now I see what those terms are about because as you've explained they used the same word to describe a setting at a different place! I'm now excited about experimenting with them as you being an excellent instructor having illumined me as to how they can be selected and for what purpose and effect. I better subscribe! Thanks mate!

I had the impression that within a mode the damping characteristics changed dynamically according to the conditions encountered?
@justthewayitis
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, yes that is absolutely correct. Each mode starts with either, Road, Dynamic or Enduro, as its base setting, then that is enhanced by the systems and sensors on the bike, in accordance with the way you ride and speed.

Great video! Very complete, very detailed. REQUEST: One thing I'd like to know more about is with the suspension settings in Dynamic/Auto, the difference between Dynamic and Dynamic Pro. Is there more performance with the Pro if all settings are left full on? I'm very curious! Thank you!

Agree with most of your comments. Last year we rode some of the passes in the French and Spanish Pyrenees. I was riding solo but fully loaded and wanted to get a bit of a wriggle on. The bike was in Auto DSA and Dynamic Pro riding mode. The suspension coming out of slow hairpins was ideal but the throttle response was too severe with the bike leant over at slow speed. I suppose I could have fiddled about in the ‘Pro’ setting of Dynamic and altered the throttle input but it was easier on the move to change the riding mode to Road and set the suspension control to Dynamic. It gave me the ideal setup for exiting those slow hairpins. Very clever stuff. Also agree about those indicators and await with interest your solution. I’ve supplemented mine with Denali T3’s front and rear controlled with a Hex Ezecan and am now happy that my indicators and brake lights can be seen clearly. Of course it doesn’t solve the issue some have had with the front DRL’s being confused as indicators, but to date I haven’t had anyone pull out on me.

Hi String, thank you for sharing your experience with settings, like you I found on our Norway tour with all the slow speed corners up and down the Fjords, Ride Mode : Road, Damping : Dynamic and preload: Auto. Worked best. Its actually very nice to be able to mix the settings depending on the roads. Yes, more to follow with regards to the indicators. Carl
