Am gearing up to do my own front wheel bearing replacement on my E30 and this is BY FAR the best and most complete tutorial I've watched. And I've watched A LOT OF THEM. I'm not a mechanic and haven't played one on tv either so I've been studying the crap out of these videos and this guy gave some amazing insights and reasoning behind everything. Please keep making more of these videos!!

I don't normally comment on videos, but this one is an exception. Thank you so much for a nice lengthy video describing in detail a lengthy process. I own a 2001 BMW Z3 and I changed out both front wheel bearings using your video as a guide. Exactly as shown, and since it was so thorough, I had everything I needed before starting. Thanks again for helping me out.

Great video dude. That looks like one happy car. It really is nice, and so clean! I have a 94 325i silver sedan with style 68's too! I mean the way you explained in detail everything step by step was very helpful. Including the helpful advice. I also appreciated how clearly you spoke. The lighting was also nice and bright. I can't get over how many great tools you kept whippin' out! Your craftsmanship, attention to detail, and neatness is outstanding. Very good video. I wish you could work on my car!

Great informative video! I have an E28 and I suspect that the process is pretty similar. Thanks for taking the extra time to explain the different ways of getting the job done especially the inner dust cap and the fit issue with aftermarket hubs.

Brilliant video, thank you for this. I would suggest replacing the dust shield every time the bearing is replaced as preventative maintenance. The area around the 3 little bolts corrodes and it’s a pain - either the bolts needs washers to clamp the shield solid or a new shield has to be cut to slide over the hub. In the UK, the shield is about £20 so well worth doing when the bearing is out. Again, thanks for the vid and the clear, careful explanation.

I seen a lot of these DIY videos and I must say - your videos are well prepared and well planned. I thought to myself before watching this video "I´ve seen and done wheel hubs, but maybe I´ll pick up some tricks from this guy"... After watching this video, I´ve picked up a lot of tricks and "best practice"-methods... You seem to go the extra mile by cleaning surfaces and marking positions. I like it! Looking forward to see more of your videos in the future! Hope you see this comment and that it might inspire you - this video inspired me though :-)

Thank you very much for this well made video. I decided to replace my bearing myself in order to save some money. I never imagined that the hardest part of doing this job would be finding a 40mm socket for the stub nut. I got everything in order including the pullers; I thought I'd swing by the tool store on my to my garage to quickly grab the socket; NOPE! I have gone everywhere with no luck.(Yes I went to Sear and Harbor Freight) I finally had to order one from the internet. The realities of getting things done. I still think I might save money when all is said and done though. So thanks again.

Great Videos. I just did the hubs in my 1996 318i based on your tutorial. very doable when you know what you are getting into after watching your vid. To note, the hubs came out without a puller, and went on with out a press which made it that much faster and easier. They were tight but easily slid off and the new ones on just with hand pressure. Same with the races that were left behind. weird eh? Anyway, thanks again.

All pro mechanics should have this kind of level in craft and workmanship. However, they rarely perform on such level. In fact every time I visited the dealer, I ended up having to rectify their sloppy work afterwards. Annoying things like stuck wheel lugs, oil filter caps torqued down way over their spec and just monkey wrench the job. This DIYer is a shining example of how the job should be done. Its not rocket science. In fact all it takes is some care and dedication. That's why after a dealership service, I ended up having to go through their entire procedure, finding all sorts of mishaps. I have a recall notice on a E90 with vanos bolt problem that require replacing. The bolts are alloy and tends to break causing the engine to stall. Why in the world BMW uses some aluminium bolts is beyond me. I always laugh when I hear people say the German cars are all over-engineered. Perhaps this was true in the older cars, but the new ones are a PITA to work on. They don't even come with a dipstick to check the engine oil. In fact, the fancy over-engineered creations result in a computer checking your oil level and is known to be very inaccurate. In fact, if the electronics went kaput, which happens a lot to German cars, you can kiss your engine good-bye for oil-starving. Anyway, my hats off to this gentleman for showing the correct way to maintain our BMWs and taking pride in his work.

The bearing was used for testing purposes on the drivers side because I was gearing up to make a video of wheel bearings; I found that not all bearings are created equally. I have had quiet rides with TImken, Koyo, SKF, and Fag...as far as I know Koyo bought out Timken so you may find a Timken bearing in a Koyo package. I don't even know what the other brand names were that I tested because there was no name on the box....just a part number with made in China under it. Not only did they make noise, they also did not fit properly. BMW seems to like SKF while Ford likes Koyo and Timken... Timken was also the supplier for the Ford GT500 inner pinion bearing which was able to handle more torque. All these companies seem good in my opinion....Just sayen

Great job and easy to watch! Quick question for you '95 E36 325is M50 I ran a compression test after changing valve cover gasket. My readings have me a little curious. I checked my tester on compressor up to 120 psi and worked good enough. The test came up dry 1-6 as follows 210, 213, 217, 216, 219, 216 and wet 219, 260, 245, 262, 244, 245. Does these numbers seem normal to you? This weekend I will be doing a leak down test. After test, car runs fine and I haven't noticed any oil leaks exceptaround the valve cover before, now it is clean. Any thoughts?

You should coat the stub shaft and the inside of the bearing races with anti-seize before you install it. Your future self will thank you down the road when you have to replace the bearing again and it comes off like butter. Also anti-seize on the axle nut threads. A thin coat of anti-seize on the inside of the rotor mounting face also keeps corrosion down. Anti-seize ALL THE THINGS

Nice video! I will be attempting this on a 2006 BMW Z4, I hope it is similar enough! You mentioned a distinct preference to steel wool over sandpaper for cleaning mating surfaces, could you briefly elaborate on why? I am guessing that leaving silicon grit behind might cause wear issues, but won't careful cleanup address that?

I'll be replacing the rear wheel bearings on my E36 so I'll be doing a video in the not-too-distant future. It needs to be road legal first which means passing an MoT (annual UK roadworthiness test similar to state inspections). Noisy wheel bearings aren't a failure unless there's too much play in the bearing.

A little tip is if you have the race without the lip, take a dremel tool and score a notch in the race that goes about halfway down through the race and then give it a good shock with a cold chisel. Should just crack the race and drop right out. Just be careful not to knick the stub shaft

Red loctite can sometimes be a pain to remove hardware. I like to use red loctite on differential ring gears, pinion nut, harmonic balancer crank bolt etc... Blue loctite is no slouch though, it holds very well for future fastener removal.

Hello. I recently changed these hubs at home, but unfortunately it wasn't so colorful at my place :( I also bought SKF, only mine did not have a groove and I did not pay attention to it and tightened what caused that the dust cover had nowhere to hide and the hub did not want to And here I have a question, if the hub has no groove, do you need to remove the dust cover before installing the hub?
