This video shows how a gas tank can implode (suck in) when a vent tube or charcoal canister becomes clogged or fails to operate properly. This vehicle happens to be a 1997 740iL, but the procedure applies to other years and other models of BMW as well.
The canister is located behind the wheel well liner of the rear driver side (us car). when replacing the canister the vent tube should be replaced with the updated one I show in the video. Once the vent hose is replaced it isn't necessary to do it again. The charcoal filter should probably be on some time of preventative maintenance replacement frequency (i.e. every 100k miles?).
The part numbers are: Charcoal cannister = 16-13-6-758-757, vent tube = 16-13-1-184-554; run about $100 for cannister and $25 for vent tube if you shop around. Note this is for 1997 740il; i think it fits '95 to mid '98, but verify your proper part numbers here: www.realoem.com
