Sounds like Vanos to me, although at that mileage i would not want to overlook timing chain guides and tensioners being exessively worn too. My 2001 540iA has the same noise at idle, but with a little throttle the noise seems to be far less noticeable, higher oil pressure at increased RPM'S seems to keep the Vanos happy or at best a bit quieter. Keep up the video's guys, they have been very helpful with respect to doing repairs and diagnostics, and most importantly, what I should be paying attention to in relation to regular servicing and maintanance. All the best Dale (Aus)........

This is also a good time to look for leaking valve cover seal leaks. This is a great engine well balanced. As for noise it seems like a vanos or worn cam lobes problem. A good aftermarket repair shop can check for deflection and pressurization using a BMW scan tool.

My 03' 540 sounds similar with just 80 miles on it. I had it looked at by a thoroughly knowledgeable bmw, Bentley, and Porsche mechanics instructor who happens to own an 01' 540i. He assured me that they have a noisy vanos system. Mine quiets a bit when warm but at idle both his and mine make noise too. It's common. He also said they like to go through sensors.... Lots of them.. cam position sensors, wheel speed sensors and ambient temp to name a few. Given love through these sleepers are well worth the repair costs, best bet is routine maintenance.

Hi eguys. E39 awesome video. Ive got a 01 e39 with 153k kms. Im the 2nd owner. Previous owners seemed like they did everything by the book at the dealership which is a good thing for me. I've started feeling a slight engine vibration at certain rpms only. On idle it will do this vibration at around 1000 to 1500 rpa and then beyond 2500 for a very short time. Rest of the spectrum runs smooth as butter. The engine has a typical slightl rattling noise. Yours is definitely a lot louder. For the vibrations I read up on forums. Easiest thing to check for is the fan being off balance. Mine is fine. Now im down to spark plugs, solenoids and the vanos sensor. The o2 sensors are also on the list. I got some errors for the camshaft positioning sensor a couple of months back when I went over 5k rpms gunning down some roads. It went away after I cleared the codes a few times. So I didn't bother changing the sensor. Right now im thinking of just changing all spark plugs. Im also thinking of cleaning all contacts on solenoids and the vanos sensors with contact cleaner and then compressed air. Any suggestions thoughts or comments are most welcome. Any awesome videos on solenoid diagnosis please send me a link. Thank you guys happy new year and happy driving. .

Take a look at your motor mounts... these cars are getting old and these are bound to start braking soon. If you don't currently have codes for misfires of CPS (mostly intake, sometimes exhaust) sensors, then it's probably not that. Fresh plugs are never a bad idea. Cleaning the VANOS systems is a good idea too, just be very careful. Andrew has some videos on this channel about the VANOS from his 2000 M5. Also make SURE it's not the fan or fan clutch, that's very possible too! Good luck, Ryan

Thanks. Yep got some good info on checking fan clutch. Will check it out today. I'm also going to get the tires re balanced as its been a couple of months but the vibration really feels like its from the engine or maybe an imbalance in the drive shaft however, I haven't found anyone else mentioning that issue. I will also try to look at the engine mounts but it all feels quite solid at startup etc. No sir, no engine lights or error codes on the obd2 reader so far. Your inputs are Much appreciated!

Yeah sounds like Vanos rattle like Ryan's M5 makes and could possibly be a lifter making noise along with the vanos. BMW uses high mileage oil change intervals and sometimes tiny particles of sludge can reduce the flow of oil to the lifters. The Rislone engine treatment smells very strong like it has a good cleaner I would buy some of that next time you have to replace a quart of oil. Then run it for a couple hundred miles change the oil and replace another quart when filling it.

I have had 4 BMW's in my life 72' 2002, 75' 2002, 83' 318 and 99' 535. They all had the old sowing machine sound though this doesn't mean all is ok. One thing I found out about my 535 is the injectors are very sensitive about fuel pressure. I can't remember tge specs but mine was just 2 lbs over spec"BMW's go by bar". After changing the regulator it ran smoother, better performance and MPG increase. Let me tell you though if the injectors loose prime you will have a time getting them primed. My advice is get a German made repair manual that cost over 100 US dollars and most everything is easily repaired.

I've just changed mine this afternoon. I've found there was no need to remove the top cover. Secondly, I decided NOT to remove the clips like you did at 0:55. Just unfasten and CAREFULLY remove the 2 little nuts holding the spark plug boot down, sweep the boot aside carefully, remove the old spark plug, put in the new one, move on to the next one, that's all.

Your vibration could be due to worn engine mounts. Get the 540 spec ones and don't go for the M5 Corteco ones. Take a screwdriver (one with the shaft that goes all the way through the handle) and put it on different parts of the engine. Put your ear on the other end of the handle. Listen to see where the noise is getting louder. You mention slapping, and that could be from chain slap by the timing chain covers. Chain tensioner could be right up your alley, and if you really want to, chain guides

And it seemed like the oil was getting into the engine. So what i did. Was change the oil. Amd the spark plugs and the coils. Bc all that got wet with the oil. and my car stop shaking after i changed those 3 things. Then the engine was completely balanced. Bc you said. There was a leak that u gad before. I hear the same noise on my 2000 540i E39. It only has 99k miles on it. I also notice sometimes when i start the engine, it makes a rather loud rattling noise that only last for a couple of seconds then it goes away. The car recently started misfiring pretty bad, so i'm getting ready to do spark plugs then hopefully not have to do the coils.
@e39source87

Sounds like you do need spark plugs for the misfires, but the rattling noise on startup is VANOS. That's normal for V8 BMWs from this time frame, and doesn't effect health or performance, just makes a little bit of noise. I wouldn't worry about that too much.
@Selfmade345

***** Thanks for the reply! Yes. I did the spark plugs, but Unfortunately, It still has the misfire. I went ahead and ordered a pack of six coils and will be throwing those on asap. The reason I bought six is because I remember i got the car scanned once due to my check engine light coming on and off and the scanner gave me 4 Cylinders misfiring. But it somehow stopped and never came back on until just recently. My brakes are also freezing up during extreme cold weather. I had the system flushed today at the shop. Its gotta be done at the first sign of trouble, because letting it run like that could allow it to jump timing, at which time the engine will possibly be beyond any economically reasonable means of repair. Not to mention, anyone harboring the belief that someone who's not at the very least, a decently experienced mechanic, Who has a strong understanding of what's happing under that aluminum bonnet, plus why it's happening, while in possession of a quality complete set of proper tools,for whom this trip into the engine room is not "their 1st rodeo", so they won't get scared, confused, or panic while in the middle of the job if this repair becomes the very definition of "a major engine repair", and has reliable, consistent access to a safe place where you can work on the car, distraction free, without deadlines, a risk of getting into some sort of trouble, trustpassing, loitering, or breaking any law, including ones against the storage of that vehicle while it's unable to move under its own power, yet believe they'll be+0+]*í9 getting a reliable, running car after 540i e÷rthey put their run thenis deep into a fantasy, that will certainly betray them, leaving the444 in a self inflicted nightmare. It will be headaches, hours on Google, KZitem, many mistakes, giving up, maybe or maybe not giving in, having to buy lots of new tools, finding people to ask for help, $$$ & more $$$, etc. especially if you're not talking "complete engine swapover, which will require much more than renting an engine hoist to get done properly, has signed up for at the least, an 89.9% chance of expensive mistakes. That alone could keep your car out of traffic for so long a time, that buying another car for the wait is the only other option when life doesn't stop for your needs. Though when you consider how little cash fairly decent 540i's go for these days, they seem all the more disposable. They will be rare one day, if just because so many will jump timing, or just end up with too long of a list of much needed repairs to fix, especially if you're not even a so-so, make-believe mechanic, and you'll need a tow truch to get you to the mechanic you'll be paying full price to for most of those repairs as well. That's a terminal illness for so many older BMW'S. A belief that it's all rocket science, and sorcery under the hood has been the signature on the death warrant for so many clean examples of this facinating sports sedan. Sad how often you'll see a car so elegant, in design, that's so well engineered, cost a fat fortune at a time that feels not that long ago, rolling off dealer lots already equipped to out performs many vehicles that will be sold new in 2021, and was built during an era commonly believed to be a historical high point for BMW's. A well delivered execution of "the sport sedan" concept that is still commonly referred to by so many who know what it takes to be a legendary drivers car. This car, during this time, is a driving experience worth savoring. There will never be another new car like the e39 in anyone's future lifetime. Better, worse, but never like this again.
