In all my years of viewing KZitem DIYs, you are definitely among the BEST when it comes to explaining a particular procedure. You tell the proper way and the reason of what and what not to do. Your succinct and informative manner is a welcome relief from some of the KZitemrs who feel it necessary to tell their life's story instead of just getting to the point. Keep up the great work!

a good advise for the future, is to loosen the filtercover before you drain the oil, because then the oil filter is turning upwards it will not drain all the oil in the filterhouse, until you loosen the filter,

79.99 must be non synthetic. Or, maybe labor only; ) Really, 80.00 seems way low, 200.00 way high. And hell if I'd go to any of my local dealers for that unless they were running a special, or I desperately needed them for something else (not likely!!). Unfortunately, the 2 relatively local BMW 'service centers' I've been to in the past 15 years, are both equally, overall, horrible to deal with. But, I digress. Wonderful video! Looking forward to my first oil change on a recently purchased lo mi 2002 330ci vert. What a great car. It's no wonder EAG is getting large$$$ for E46s. It's the one to own imho.

@ walter n - depends on what you want to do with the car. If you are using it for a daily driver and need it to last for as long as possible then I do NOT recommend a cold air intake that typically makes use of either an oiled cotton gauze, oiled foam or fine mesh screen. Why? Because in independent testing it has been proven over and over and over that higher flow filters do pass some degree of extra fine dirt into your motor. Silica levels in used engine oil analysis has proved that engines are dirtier with a high flow intake. If you're using your car for racing or you really want that extra pep then a high flow intake is definitely beneficial. Cold air intakes are great for helping generate more power but there are tradeoffs such as more dirt being ingested, potential for sucking in water which will literally destroy your motor since water is not compressible and they can be pricey and break if not installed properly. Don't get me wrong, I am not against K&N or CAI or performance products that do work - just remember there are ALWAYS trade offs. I run a AEM cold air intake on my CRX but I will refuse to put a K&N in my daily driver minivan. Why? My CRX is a car mean to be driven they way Honda designed it - peppy and fun to throw it into corners. I even tracked it once so I needed all the power I could get. Noticeable performance jump with a CAI on the CRX with stock motor especially on the low end torque. Minivan - using stock Honda cotton/paper hybrid filter element for maximum filtration to maximize the life of my family hauler. No speed or performance records to be broken so why bother with a high flow filter system? Hope that helps shed some light on your question.

some do and some don't. I know of a lot of mechanics that will re-use seals (I sometimes have to) but best practice is to always use new orings / washers / gaskets whenever possible. Why risk a leak when the part cost is so minimal and the added effort is next to nothing.

Excellent. Thank you very much. The only difference is I use the BMW spec 5w30 from the dealership which works out to be cheaper than the other stuff. Make sure your oil is euro spec 5w30, not U.S. spec 5w30. There IS a difference.
@piercedasian

+Tony Latigo I should have mentioned that.... yes I am using the euro spec'd oil. I'm sure there likely won't be any long term harm using the US spec'd oil (if you couldn't find german spec'd oil)under typical driving conditions. I would never use any other oil other than what the manufacturer's suggest if I were going to "track" my car.

I have changed my engine oil and filter on my 2004 325xi many times in the last 10 years but for the first time I am having the o-ring bulge and the oil leak around the oil filter o-ring. Over-tightening or even replacing with a NAPA-Platinum filter hasn't helped. Please advise any suggestions you might have to address this issue.Thanks in advance,Amol
@piercedasian

+Amol Barrage is the ring from BMW or is it from NAPA? I sometimes find that seals provided by 3rd party part suppliers don't always cut it and find that the genuine factory parts fit better and are generally made better. If you're using a NAPA seal consider going to BMW to purchase your next filter/oring assembly and see if that resolves your issue.

Put it this way... I would never own a German car. They're great when they work but when they break... OMG... My most recent new car is a 2017 Civic Type R and I went that route instead of buying myself an Audi S3 or a Mercedes C class car. I even considered the Golf R from VW but still went back to Honda for the sake of simplicity of servicing. I keep my cars forever and servicing is a HUGE consideration in my purchasing decision. So to answer your question German cars drive me crazy and Japanese cars for the most part follow common sense.

My previous car was a Type R build with the old school B series engine but this K motor with turbo is a different beast both in a good and bad way. It doesn't scream like the old B motors but it definitely churns out gobs of power that you would not normally expect from any Honda let alone a Civic!

you will end up saving money in the long run. Look for sales on oil. I buy the big jug (5qt) of oil at Walmart for @$25, sometimes they have them on sale for 22 bucks; get your filter. Buy two jugs since you need 7 qts., save that other 1/2 for the next oil change. Yes, the tools may cost you, but they're yours, and in the long run they will pay for themselves. Not to mention the satisfaction of doing something productive for yourself.

Great video. I am changing my oil tomorrow morning, after 2 days of research I have decided to use Mobile 1 0w-40, or Pennzoil platinum 5w-30. My friend recommended these 2. He also recommended Castrol 0w30 european formula but all I could find at parts store, there was a castrol 0w-40 european formula that I found. AS for a filter k & n racing filter $10 ok for synthetic or do I really have to get a Bosch filter. Please please respond to me, I would really appreciate it, oh ye I live in Northen CA car has 150k miles automatic. Thanks a million. Also I drive 100 miles a day 2k a month.
@piercedasian
9 жыл бұрын
+Kayvan Komari As long as the filter you use is made meets OE specs (which all filters sold in parts store do) you'll be fine. You can use a heavier weight oil but just remember that you will take a minor hit in fuel economy (you probably won't even notice it) and it will be harder to start in cold weather (which won't be a problem for you given that you're in CA). I can't remember all the specs out there but you should double check your owners manual to verify that 40 weight oil is okay to use in your engine. I believe it is but nobody will no your car better than the folks that built it. Wow 2k miles a month? I thought I drove lots but you take the record on that one...
@aim4success84

+piercedasian thanks alot. yea i ended up using the 0w-40 car feels lighter and runs smoother. only downside if I drive up a hill I can smell a slight oil smell burn. last time I added a stop leak and stop smoke and it fixed issue like magic what are your thoughts on an oil additive. yea Im an uber lyft driver, I drive alot.
@piercedasian
9 жыл бұрын
ah Uber driver.. that would explain it. If your oil is burning oil (b/c you're saying you smell it and its smoking) then 40 weight oil will help with oil consumption b/c it's thicker and doesn't blow past seals and rings quite as easily as a lighter weight oil would. I'm very against oil additives as a normally functioning engine that isn't worn out should never need it. Modern oils have enough detergents and anti wear agents that you don't need to add more. Additives only buy you time but the inevitable will eventually come around where your engine or transmission or whatever is on the way out the door will need to be either replaced or rebuilt. Stop leaks are especially bad but if you have no other viable option then there is no harm in trying the additive out.
@aim4success84

Amsoil oil is awesome. I like their transmission and differential oils. I've never used their engine oils before because I'm still leery on its longevity but I think I just need to try it and conduct a used oil analysis to really convince me. Tranny and diff oil I'm not as worried about since some folk NEVER replace it in their cars with no real ill effects (until of course the miles are SUPER high).

My car has been maintained with the Castrol you recommend except for the weight. (Virginia USA 5-30) but BMW has decided Pennzoil Platinum is their go to oil now. I don't foresee a problem changing brands as long as I stay with 5-30 and a good filter (K&N) What do you think?

Aren't you supposed to lube the new oil filter before you put it back in? Also shouldn't you use a torque wrench when you tighten up the housing at the end?

+dave lowe torque wrenches in certain applications are totally unnecessary. I use my better judgement (common sense) on tightening down fasteners and an oil filter housing isn't any different. once it's tightened down and "snug" there isn't a need to further tighten it. Unless I'm doing critical engine component assemblies I almost NEVER use a torque wrench b/c torque wrenches at very low torque values (lower than about 70 ft-lbs) are HIGHLY inaccurate and I've seen far too many folk strip their bolts b/c their torque wrenches failed them.

alawabidingcitizen I like using Castrol Syntec, Mobil 1 or Amsoil that meets the spec of your engine's requirements. To be honest almost any quality oil will do as long as it meets the engines requirements AND it is replaced at the required service intervals.

I live in Florida where its hot majorly throughout the year, what oil would you recommend ?
@piercedasian
3 жыл бұрын
I'd still stick with the factory recommended 40 weight oil. Just because its to doesn't mean the oil can't perform as designed. The only difference is that you wouldn't need to use 0w40 or 5w40 oil but can use 10w40 oil due to the fact you don't have a cold winter in Florida. What DOES remain the same across all of the above listed oil viscosities that they all are 40 weight oils when running at operating temperatures.

Hello Piercedasian, can you tell me how to reset the oil light ? Thanks!
@piercedasian
9 жыл бұрын
+Luis Ga sure thing. To the left your cluster you should see a button (by the fuel gauge). You're going to use this button to reset the indicator. 1. With the ignition off, press and hold the button for about 8-10 seconds. Odometer will illuminate. 2. With the button still depressed turn your ignition switch to the "run position" 3. Keep holding button. Cluster will cycle through the cluster test. 4. Keep holding until you see "reset" and the word "reset" is flashing. 5. Release the button for 1 second. 6. Press and hold button down. 7. Cluster will show "oil service" 8. Continue holding down button until "end" is displayed. Hope that helps!

Is there any benefit in cleaning the filter holder with brake-cleaner or similar? Does it collect oil-gunk?
@piercedasian
4 жыл бұрын
Sorry my response is quite late but in the grand scheme of things there is no harm in using brake clean to clean the holder but if it is visually clean then no point in wasting cleaner. The only time you'd see gunk buildup is if the motor oil was GROSSLY neglected but in this car's case oil changes were regularly done.
@bogdn47
9 жыл бұрын
was that oil looking bad and it needed change or you did it for the sake of the filter?
@piercedasian
9 жыл бұрын
nope the oil was not bad at all but the BMW is somewhat of a garage queen and engine oil over a long period of time does go bad especially on a car that isn't driven very much. Acids and sludge build up over time so it is a good idea to get it out of the engine as recommended by the manufacturer. Oil change automatically means new oil filter too.

I'm using 2001 318i e46. I have done 115000 kms and I live in Wellington, Nz. I have been using Castrol full synthetic 5w-40 so far, I live in fairly cold city, would you recommend any other oil ?
@piercedasian
9 жыл бұрын
+Sathya Narayanan Balakrishnan Nope, I live in Canada and I wouldn't recommend anything else than what you're using already. Full synthetic flows very well in cold temperatures so you're ready ahead of the game vs. those using conventional oil. We have temperatures here that dip to minus 35C and most cars can start without too much effort and they're running dino oil!

Hey, my friend's 2005 BMW 325xi manual lists 5w-40 and 5w-30 grade synthetic oil. Using either is fine?
@piercedasian

Yes, either is fine BUT you're best to use 5w40 weight oil in the warmer months or climate and the 30 weight oil in frigid temperatures.

In other Words, one of the round plastic caps from the oil filter is stuck inside & at the bottom of where the filter goes. The whole filter came apart while I was removing it. so I just wanna know if I can remove that plastic cap without damaging anything.
@piercedasian
9 жыл бұрын
Manny Alvarez you should be able to just use a pair of pliers and yank it out. If memory serves me correctly it is a friction fit on the oil filter housing stem. Look at your new filter and compare to your old filter and if there aren't any "threaded" portions of the filter end that is stuck in the housing then I don't see why you can pull it out. I doubt you'll do any damage as the filter end caps will likely break long before you break that sturdy aluminum oil filter housing.

hi again. got a 2004 e46 with 90k on it. question for oil change. some says 5w30 . some says 5w40. I read the label on Castro oil jug. 5w40 meet BMW longline spec but not the 5w30. I plan to put 0w40 European spec oil and also it meet BMW spec. what do you think. Is it bad idea or will hurt my motor?
@piercedasian
7 жыл бұрын
you can run 5w30 oil BUT I wouldn't run it for very long. Use it if you absolutely must as a stop gap if you had to top off oil b/c you were low but I would STRONGLY suggest you get the proper viscosity. 0w40 is acceptable as I've run that oil before with no ill effects.
@jongkeunlee

It is actually a range of acceptable oils. It can be 0w30, 0w40 or even 5w30 or 5w40 if you have no other option. I just by chance had 0w30 oil in my garage and the owners manual does show it as being acceptable to use.
