I can explain the strange exhaust path. It's to equalise the downpipe lengths before the exhausts merge. This is why the G80 sounds better than the F80, and why you can now buy "equal length midpipes" to make the F80 sing like it should.

The idea behind the different exhaust layout just after the downpipes is to get equal length exhaust for both banks (after each turbo). The reason the S55 has the distinctive sound is the unequal length exhaust tubing after each turbo. On the S58 they did the routing such that both sides get the same length. There is also aftermarket equal length exhaust for the F8x which changes the sound to a more «normal» straight six: store.activeautowerke.com/products/f8x-bmw-m3-m4-equal-length-mid-pipe

I'd always thought that the reason BMW tends to be modest about the power of M cars is more to do with the temperature than fuel quality. I live in Yorkshire in the UK and it's not very warm most of the time so the air is a lot more dense here than it would be say in UAE or Florida. All cars love cold air but turbocharged cars particularly appreciate it. Thanks for taking us along on the lap, Misha.

I will own one of these in the next few years. I just will. With a manual. And, to be honest, being a regular driver, I hope it’s a bit understeery the first times I go for a quick drive, and certainly when I take on the track for the first time(s)...
@BMWQC

That was a really great review! I have worked with BMW for over thirty five years, I have noticed that ever since the E-90 days or thereabouts BMW has been dialing in more understeer into the vehicles. Just look at the sway bar setup in most models, they have a large bar up front and practically a wire coat hanger in the back ha ha. They claim it’s for safety. The newer active sway bars are becoming more popular so they should be able to control the vehicle dynamics a bit better being able to control the sway bars.Hopefully they will have a mode or an adjustment so the driver could adjust the front and rear rates. But that would open up liability I suppose. Thank you for such a great review!

It'd be interesting to know where all that weight is. Chassis, suspension, engine, everything? Sounds like you'd get the same performance as a 1200kg car with 300bhp, but now with more expensive tyres, more brake wear, higher fuel consumption, but maybe better crash survivability? That thing's heavier than a 4wd Subaru! Maybe I'm wrong but where's the upside?

If it was understeering, it was likely because you put a more aggressive tire on the car than stock without changing the alignment. So the issue isn’t that the stock alignment is understeer-y, it’s that you didn’t change the alignment to match a new tire.

Went to a lot of trouble leveling those weighing stands! If you've gone that far, should have two flat metal plates between the tires and the load cells, tare'd out, with heavy oil or light grease between the plates. This nullifies side loads and binding. It's the method used when weighing light aircraft, too.

1:45 I am afraid that is not how physics work :D yes, you have more "tire friction" in heavier car with the same tires because friction force = μ*N where normal force N is direct proportional to car's weight BUT you need that grip to handle centrifugal force in turns and that force (F = m v² / r) is also directly proportional to cars weight so in reality heavier car is only going to make tires wear faster because greater force is being exerted on ground but grip stays the same (doesn't really because as the tire tread wears faster, the grip is also decreasing faster than on lighter car with the same tires)...Anyhow, I like that they still make manual option, thx for the review :)
