I honestly and truly enjoy your reviews. It's like a friend of mine telling me about a bike he's considering. Relaxed, friendly, informative, and fun. The estate in which these are filmed is beautiful. Yours are among my top 3 or 4 favorite motorcycle content makers. Thank you very much. (By the way, where's the kid been?) PS: Nice touch putting all the facts & figures on the screen at the end. This allows me to pause and actually read through them at my pace. Thanks again, well done.

Hi Guys, First of all, thank you very much for your good work and for sharing the results with us. To me this bike only looks "ok" - for a BMW. BMW is best known for making bikes that are technically ok but have an appearance that makes you feel nauseous. And now this somewhat embarrassing attempt to gain a foothold in the cruiser world. Without authenticity or history to relate to. No way I would trade my Harley for this explicit exhibit ... for God's sake, no. As a German, I've never ridden a BMW in my entire life and I will keep it that way. Of course, other people will like and adore this bike, it is a matter of taste. But for me, personally, it is just a piece of shit. Absolutely no alternative to Harley, Indian, Yamahas XV Family or Triumph

I managed to testdrive the BMW R18. And I have to say it was the best testride ever. As you describe very nicely, that engine is all a fantastic experience. Starting the engine alone is already an experience, the shaking of the boxer engine is great. I'm searching for a second bike to ride on a lazy Sunday and I have to say it sticks to my memory. Although I certainly don't want to pass up the Harley-Davidson Classic heritage. I hope I will be able to ride this one soon. Your channel is the best I can find here, it is always clear and no bullshit. Congratulations and thank you for all those nice moments I can dream away in these strange times. Using the BMW web site configurator the bike with first edition package, headlight pro, reverse, engine guards, and a windscreen with LED lights can out to $22,000USD. I would opt for a Sergeant seat and panniers which would add another $1,500 compared to H-D's Heritage Classic without headlight pro and reverse for $20,200USD. Given the pricing, I would lean toward the BMW.

Cheers Mate from across the pond in San Diego. Mr. Darcy, I had my first test ride on the R18 on Wednesday and I agree with you pretty mush 100%. I would just need a little pre-ride time adjusting the rear suspension a bit to my liking and it would be just fine. Torque for days! It just keeps on pullin' like a freight train. I'll be picking one up in a month or so, and then I have an '80 FXB freshly restored that will join the R18 in the garage. I like your style of critiquing and shooting from the hip! Good review, and BMW seems to be trying to avoid the same mistakes it made with their last 'Harley competitor', the ill-fated R1200C... namely that previously 'unconventional' styling, which also had plenty of low-end torque, but with only 62 ponies had little power left at the top end. And at nearly 800 lbs, one would hope this tracks straight ahead, though strange to go to all that trouble to expose the 'retro' drive shaft, and then cover it all up again (no doubt for 'safety' concerns), with such an unbelievably 'you-gly' and cheap-looking muffler?! But the uber-loyal Harley folks still ain't gonna buy it, though it might manage to attract a few affluent hipsters too lazy to strip down an older BMW airhead and make a lighter and better-performing 'custom' for a fraction of the cost.

Great review. I had a look at one yesterday at Barnstormer. It's a very impressive and beautifully made motorcycle. Hopefully, I will organise a ride next week, weather permitting. Only one thing that I didn't like, and this doesn't only effect this bike, but why do manufacturers put ridiculous scales on their speedos. If the bike has a top speed of 110mph, why put a 0 to 200mph speedo on it? That means that at least 40% of the display is redundant even when maximum speed is reached, and realistically who is going to be doing that speed on a bike like this with no wind protection? Why not just make the scale 0 to 120mph? That would give you a much more accurate scale to see for normal riding, as well as riders who want to max out on the unrestricted sections of the autobahn.

When I test rode this I was prepared for many things but not for the surprising and in so many ways admirable truth: BMW built a true heritage bike. Not a me-too copycat vehicle that does what others already do well or potentially better but a bike that’s true to BMWs own long standing history and heritage. This will displease some people because it makes the bike stand out. It rides rough. That engine is overwhelming on all levels. The ergonomics are odd, the mirrors don’t work, etc., etc. But, more than anything else, they took the sensation of the original R5 and other legendary models and built a heritage classic bike that breaks with tradition only to bring its personality back to life. And that’s what makes this bike special. Later versions of the bike may please more people, but the ones who buy this bike in its first edition will get the unbelievable pleasure to ride a time machine that is pure engineering excellence and fanatic attention to every detail. Love it, hate it, you can’t ignore the BMW R18. Oh and a jolly good review, too, almost forgot!!!

I am a bmw fan but that exhaust is hidious! It spoils an otherwise handsome cruiser. Great relaxed engine perfect for a cruiser. Doesn't make the lovely noise of the heritage softail which is my favourite Harley. I owned a few sporsters the last being a 2017 xl1200C but my experiences with those were negative. Nice engines spoiled by awful comfort and poor handling...should have bought the Heritage Classic! The price is simply unjustifiable. How on earth can such a simple stripped back bike cost as much as loaded GSA? £18000 is a heck of a lot of money for most pockets and would buy a good car! I have to say that the fit and finish on that bmw us peerless. It's one area where I do believe it betters the Harleys consiferably...the fit and finish on my sportsters was poor.

You should commission a painting . . . a portrait of yourself with this motorcycle. This vehicle and the way you look at this moment of your life is exceedingly striking. Your future kin will find their grandfather (great, g., g., etc.) quite a remarkable and wounderous looking character. Yes! This motorcycle and you visually seem the absolute, perfect fit.

Great Video, good to see a honest review from a real cruising experienced Harley guy! How would you compare the R18 to a Harley Road King or Indian Springfield which I proudly own? (as a German) :-)
@MrDarcy-OlMan
4 жыл бұрын
Björn Altmann Thank you! I’m still waiting to review the Indians but Road King I have ridden. R 18 has beautiful handling and the long wheelbase and rake/trail equal a stable yet good turning bike. The Road King has a more forward riding position and feels short in length by comparison and is less fun in the bends. Both have soal,

Again I enjoyed your review! It has a very nice sound I notice too. Im yet to see one in the flesh, although I don't think I would sell the fatboy for one. But if I was buying now, it would be a tempting thing. I love that motor, and overall style, however its just as expensive as a harley, so, well, just buy the harley!

It is definetly a good cruiser. However if you willing to spend that money i would go Harley. Because i don't like riding R18 and peoples think that it is a Harley. Get the original Harley. You can be happy with either the Softail or a good RoadKing.

It'll disappear in 3 yrs like the R1200C. Poeple in the U. S. A. Will not pay 23,500.00 for a BMW cruiser. You want be able to find a basic model. Because a dealer isn't gonna carry one. All they'll have is all the bells and whistles.. A Harley rider in the states will never give it a second look. Another thing, the engineer of the original boxer engine developed the boxer engine, for aircraft back in world war 1. The reason was to get air for cooling. What I'm trying to say is...if the same engineer was designing a motor for motorcyles using today's technology with water cooling and the materials at hand for making lighter and stronger engines. He would not be coming up with this engine. There is no point in having cylinders stick out like that in today's world of tech. Look at the H.D. V-Twin, the KTM, Ducati, Triumph parallel twins of 1700cc, Indian twins and all the Japanese twins. The BMW engineer I'm speaking of was MAX FRITZ.

That "kick to the left" you're describing sounds an awful lot the "torque effect", a left turning tendency, for example of a single prop air plane like the Cessna 172. Basically all that torque the engine produces is transferred into the camshaft. Camshafts typically rotate clockwise. Because of Newtons 3rd (every action has an equal and opposite reaction), the huge amount of torque rotating the camshaft clockwise (to the right) makes the bike jerk counter-clockwise (to the left). Here's a link to a very basic graphical explanation: lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/d2IVfRXz7zsnRDWM3FOr2GoU1GwUl5NOwWuHkjDk53lWn35Adm7nZKCzbjHQ2QpvDdhm3J-YcH3ejl-nokfPiyAfmHnWrKOewuARr3PFfg Cheers!
