Over here in the "colonies" I put over 155,000 miles on my 1978 BMW in 30 years. Crossed the US in both directions. Whether it was below sea level in the desert or 11,500 ft in Colorado it always ran great.

As I mentioned in your live vid. My dads got a 2013 TE 1200GS. It kept stalling while riding and locking the back wheel up he took it back to bmw Williams of Manchester. First 2 times they tried to fob him off but the 3rd time they did a proper check. It turned out it had scored pistons and the gearbox was shot and a few other problems. Even though the warranty was out bmw repaired the bike as a good will guesture at the cost of £4800 as the bike is low miles 11k and very good condition. My dad had to put in £600 towards the repair. 3 months they had it for and now it’s had a complete engine rebuild and a brand new gearbox

Great review! I plan to buy a new (ish) bike in the near future when I can release some pension funds, and I keep looking at things like street triples and MT09's etc.. Nice review again! Out of all the bikes I have owned, and I've owned a few (55 bikes and counting.....) I have found BMW to have the worse aftersales of all of them. That was not just one BMW dealer but several. They do make nice bikes though, you just have to hope they are reliable!

Great annual review. I have found the same thing with the GS, I got my first one in 2008 and replaced it with another in 2010 they are the leatherman of the motorcycle world. Love the GS TMF but had a 2015 GSA that put me over the edge. The fork issue was sorted out really quickly, in fact I received the official letter a few months after the rings were fitted! My issues were paint blisters on the cylinder head covers, the first was easy, replaced no problem, the second, reported at the same time as the first, was denied? So, after 12 months and many, many phone calls it was finally resolved. I had two water pumps, again warranty work but the dealership would not order the pump unless I left the bike with them, the first time the pump took two weeks to come in, so when that one went after only six months enough was enough. I had a duff battery in the middle of all that but I must say I did not have to pay a penny for any of the work, it was just the hassle of going back and forth. So, as the dealership also sells Triumphs, I went in with every intention of dropping BMW for Triumph and came out with an RT. That showed them eh! Anyway, what I’m trying to say, is that I agree, BMW have work to do, I’ve owned 3 GSA’s now and 3 RT’s and sadly have had issues with them all but for whatever reason, something keeps bringing me back, maybe a Triumph 1200 next time, or maybe the RT will have no issues, we’ll see......

The fork Stanchions were not handled well by BMW but they did come to the party at the end of the day.The biggest problem for BMW was being able to timeously supply the much needed parts and the tool to do a local installation.I was always aware of what was going on so I phoned my local BMW dealer in JHB from London last July 2017 and made the necessary arrangments and it was done promptly on my return.Parts did become an issue because of the demand.My bike(R1200 Adv LC) gets ridden plenty off road so I'm pleased to report that I survived the problem.Thks

I have just had my forks done and I waited just one month. It's purely down to the bushes being made and delivered thats all. Recalls are just standard procedure these days It just takes one issue like the bloke who had this accident to start one. They now crimp the fork stems in 4 positions instead of 2. It was only an issue if the bike was heavily abused. I am very happy with the bush fix it looks good to be honest and it gets done in 1 hour . Excellent

I am enjoying The Missenden Flyer videos very much, thank you, and especially the trip to Scotland on the GS. I rode the GS 1200 2010 with my wife in the back and luggage, through Europe 2 times and it is a great mashine. Comming from a Triumph Tiger 2011 it is quite different to handl, in fact, it rides as an atletic tank. In 2 years we wil go back to Europe, the Netherlands (living and wordkiing on Curacao) and I first would like to ride a R1200RT 2014, to see if that's my kind of ride. Otherwise it will be a R1200GS 2014. Maybe we''ll do Scotland :-)

Hi MF and greetings from Canada! I pay $600 a year from a $8,000 bike for insurance for a 5 month riding season, so you Brits are getting a smoking deal at 205. In your costs of maintenance, are you amortizing the costs or resetting of values annually? Spoke to a dealer here and it is recommended every 20,000 km or 12,000 m plus or minus which is shocking to me for the cost of the bike. In house quote was $800 every 20,000kms so I will assume more realistically, $1,000 to $1200 per year. Has anyone added electronics feature to their GS while still on warranty? Warranty void issues?

Thinking of trading in my Tiger 800, would love to buy the new R1250GS, but opinions are so divided in forums. A lot of riders say they really love their GS, but the other half had nothing but trouble (not exactly half/half, but you know what I'm talking about). I don't know what to think or what to do, I guess you really have to have a little bit of luck with your purchase, after all it's a serious investment... You may have covered this before but one thing that really annoys me with the GS is the amount of dirt and grime it throws up onto the rear of the bike and also the back of your legs and boots. It is probably the worse bike I've owned for doing this. I've fitted a Hugger which improved it slightly so I decided to look for a better solution,,,,,, I came across the MudSling, the problem with this is they want £140+ for a piece of molded plastic!! I decided to take a look on Ebay and found a copy made in China for less than £21. I ordered the item and it is brilliant, easy to fit and does a much better job of keeping the bike and my legs clean. Now I appreciate that this may not be ethical but MudSling only have themselves to blame for charging a ridiculous amount for this item......

I contacted my dealer several weeks before I got the recall letter. And it took about 4 months to get the parts in. BMW seemed to only be releasing them for unsold models, then models formally booked in for an actual maintenance service. I complained to BMW and logged a formal compliant, but never heard from them again. I eventually had mine done at the 6k service - like you say 'not good enough BMW' for what is by their own admission a "safety" recall.

Hi. MF. Have had the same problem with the fork recall on my 2016 GSA LC, with my local BMW dealers, letter in September 17 informing me of the recall. Booked bike in for 11000 mile service hopping to get the folks done at the same time, this was back in November 17. Was put on the pile at number 50 for work to be done. Was told would be in New Year. To date still no recall work done. But have to say had problem with Gear shift pro, ie; not changing up or down sometimes, the fitter took it for a test ride after the service and she informed the service manager that the shifter was crap and they changed it there and then. Now it works and feels a different bike. Keep up the good work .

WOW! that's an expensive insurance policy. I'm roughly the same profile as you. I have the 2016 R1200R Sport, probably a higher risk than the GS. 2 years NCD £165 Hastings Direct. Brand new KTM 390 Duke (which I got at the bargain price of £3099!).1 Year NCD £105, I agree with you, it is a great little bike. Triumph Street Twin £149. You can only ride one at a time! Not sure why you are paying so much, are you riding two at the same time? Multi bike policy haha, think about it? Surely pay for the bike with the most risk Why are the others an extra risk?
@TheMissendenFlyer
6 жыл бұрын
I was with Hastings direct before, they wouldn’t put all the bikes on one policy and the cost was about the same across two. Bear in mind the GS and the Street Triple are the mist nicked bikes in the country!
@MarkStraker
6 жыл бұрын
That is good if Principal will use your NCD on more than one bike, although 205 pounds each bike is still an awful lot! I guess if you ever wanted to change insurers you would only have NCD for one bike and that could be painful! Can you shed any light on the insurance situation for bikes when you go on a trip (say, like your Scottish one) and they are not kept in your garage overnight? I take it as read that they are not insured for theft? I'm keen to go touring, but that's pretty scary!

I hope your forks have been fixed. Interesting about the fork recall. The recall came out (July 2017 in the US) at the time I was purchasing the bike (about a day or two before the sale was finalized). For me it was easy. BMW USA banned the sell of new bikes until the fix was done. So the dealership had a lot of incentive to make the repair on my bike ASAP. My local dealership was aware of one local customer whose forks had started to fail. I wonder if there is a similar situation in the UK and they are focusing more on the bikes they are selling vs the bikes they have sold?
@TheMissendenFlyer

Maybe - or it could be that the US is more litigious than the UK....

Hi TMF I had a loan bike of the BMW R1200GS TE a few years ago and I really liked it. Thinking about getting a second hand one when funds allow... But I did find that on my test ride it had an annoying vibration at higher speeds like you found on your initial test ride. Now you have owned the bike for 4 years do you still feel that vibration?

@@TheMissendenFlyer Yes, yet for some reason BMW is absolutely horrible in this regard. How many clutch assemblies do you have to make until you get it "right" (at the customers expense)or air boxes until you figured out different types of plastics expand and contract at different rates(at the customers expense), or why fuel sensor strips and cruise control switches are constantly failing(at the customers expense), the list is endless. This is all at the cost of owning a $15,000-$30,000 of what I call their test kit/bike. Why does BMW feel as though they can skip FULL R&D and just send motorcycles out for the guinea pigs to test for them. Anyway, it just seems a little backwards. Japanese bikes, you just get on and go with standard maintenance. BMW is getting to be like owning a boat, every trip out costs $1,500.00. There is such a thing as over engineering.
