Personally, I thinks it’s how Critikal described. Not everyone is going to enjoy it as much as others. It’s also just not gonna be as relatable to others as well. It’s also not very funny besides a few quick jokes. Im not much of a fan of quick quirky relatable humor either. Never really busted out laughing at any point. Personally, I really like it. However, im not gonna say that it changed my life, that’d be pretty fucking dumb, and I’m pretty sure Bo Burnham would think that too. My mental health is also dope sauce, so nothing with depression or isolation really hit me. I just really liked the songs, editing, and cinematography. Like you said it’s really top notch. Anyway, it’s nice to listen to others people perspectives on movies and media like this. Your movie channel (really like the main channel too) is one of my favorites, because you simply state what you think, and you don’t pander at all. Especially with all of the people saying this an existential masterpiece. Just wanna say to keep doing what you’ve been doing dude. As a die hard Bo Burnham fan this special was kind of dissapointing to me and I hate to say that. I just felt as if Bo had put the more introspective theme's of the show (which used to be something he'd really only explicitly touch on in the finale) so center stage that it overshadows the comedy-aspect of the show. Like, getting into the sad stuff is fun, but you only get that same kick when you precede it with an hour of actual good comedy, which we know Bo is capable of. Idk man, it just made me really sad, and not for the reasons Bo intended to make me sad, it's not a masterpiece like everyone keeps saying, Make Happy is still his best work to date, and I hate to say this but I think Bo Burnham's comedy carreer would've been way more legendary if he'd ended it when he released Make Happy.

I have a way better appreciation for it if I don’t go into it expecting humor. I hated it the first time I watched it since I’ve been a fan of Bo for years and rewatched all his specials the day before in preparation and expected like his magnum opus of comedy, but it felt like there was a lot of low-hanging fruit being grabbed at. I went back a little later and focused mostly on cinematography and musicality and had a much more enjoyable time, and a couple jokes even got a little funnier when I wasn’t going “okay where’s the funny” every 3 seconds. It’s much less of a comedy special with drama and more so a dramatic one-man show with a couple comedic bits. In his older shows (especially make happy) he does a way better job balancing surface-level humor and deeper meaning, but it’s clear to tell he didn’t make this special to be easy to stomach.

I get what you're saying, man but at a certain point in the special, I stopped expecting something really hilarious and more looked at it like it was a documentary of some kind if that makes sense. I consider Inside a documentary tapping into Bo's psyche, rather than a traditional comedy special and I think that's why I loved it so much. It connected with me on a very deep level because of his unflinching honesty and his vulnerability. It was refreshing to see a celebrity just say it as it is in very creative ways, instead of sugar-coating things. The self-awareness worked for me because I could tell that he knew he was being self-aware so he never really felt that out of touch to me at least. He was willing to open up about his mental health by making a special where he simply tries to cope with his insecurities and loneliness while stuck inside. I don't think it's that deep or anything. I think at the end of the day, it's just a dude in his house trying his best to stay sane. That's at least how I look at it. I really do get where you're coming from though. I just think if you go into it, not expecting a comedy special, you'll get much more out of it.

however you chose to accept it, it IS a comedy special, that you gave up on while watching it. and also comedians are literally known for being the most bluntly honest people in the business, that is pretty much their whole thing. and if singing a song about your feelings isn't sugarcoating to some degree then I'm not sure what is. And he wasn't "stuck inside" he lives in a giant house with his wife, and the house the special was shot in is selling for 3.25 million dollars RIGHT NOW. So making an hour special based on how much his life sucks and how sad he comes off as whining. (IMO) But everyone ate it up so maybe I'm wrong. Visuals do not make a good Comedy special, However if it connected with you on a personal or creative level then I am not trying to discourage that at all, it just ain't that funny.

To me the song exposes the craziness of the Sockos in the world AND the hypocrisy of the powerful, spouting their talking points purely for the sake of virtue-signaling and promotion.

I get where you're coming from. I personally disagree and quite enjoyed it myself. It wasn't trying to be comedic for 95% of it with what I got out of it. The main purpose of it to me was a film about losing his mind during the lockdown, struggles with mental health, and having a mid-life crisis while trying to come to terms with it all and with everything happening in the world that's stressing everyone out. The skits and attempts at comedy are intentionally not as laugh-out-loud funny as his other material and are more trying to be perfect portrayals of what we've all desperately done at points in our lives in our minds or with stuff lying around with mixed results, either with our friends or alone, to try and cope with everything, to keep ourselves distracted instead of thinking about everything, and to pass the time while bored or sad. I thought it was creative and he did an amazing job with everything on a visual, technical, etc level. The entire thing isn't going to be 100% relatable to everyone, but I'm sure everyone will find at least a chunk of it that is. It's a very personal story for him and how he's grown throughout the years which you can really feel and appreciate if you've been following him this whole time. The bits that are the funniest are when he's actually trying to be super funny. I can't agree with you saying it's a different style or a lot weaker comedically than all of his other specials from years ago. His stand-up jokes and sections in those older specials have always been pretty similar to this and with them being more of messages about anxiety, depression, etc while going through life and experiences for younger people and himself than actual laugh-out-loud jokes from what I got out of them. They were more going for laughs than this, but it wasn't a crazy difference or a totally different style.

I haven't touched Bo Burnham's work; this might actually be the first video specially about stuff relating to him only that I've watched. I can't say I like him (for obvious reasons I just stated), I just think he looks pretty cool in that special with how the shots were taken. The way he sings was funny whenever I heard it, but that was my humor years ago. Yeah, quirky humor or quirky behavior isn't my ultimate favorite especially when trying to be relatable in a musical setting. People act like this dude is the second coming of Christ, or however that saying goes, but he just seems like a guy that appeals to the audience of today. You know, the "quirky im interested in things 'normal' people aren't" type people are quite prevalent. Not to be a cynical old-timer, but let's not be in denial. I know I'm not really talking about the special or his music, but a person's reputation, behavior, attitude, presence, and overall personality is enough for me to get a feel for them. I'm not even credible since I don't know shit about his life or presence on the internet, so take this with a grain of salt. Anyhow, I'm not saying Bo is a bad person or an unlikable person (or that he thinks he's quirky and not like everyone else), I'm just saying his music and lifestyle isn't as surprising and unique as people make it out to be.

It’d be better as a comedy/skit album because while the songs were catchy, the visuals added absolutely nothing for me. It’s cool he did it all by himself, but it felt like i was watching paint dry. There’s so many possibilities with his equipment like with what he did in his specials on stage but he made it so two dimensional. There’s a chance it was on purpose to emphasize some “artistic” bull crap about feeling 2D or artificial or lame, but damn it was such a missed opportunity to me. Unfortunately, Bo is too nihilistic and too political. Also, you can be deep and serious at times, but wallowing in dread and malaise and sharing it is dumb even if it’s satirical. You don’t need impressionable people seeing that crap. The ending being sort of a Truman Show reference but Bo inside his own head was amusing though. His next piece of work will probably be better.
@jakethebarcode
3 жыл бұрын
I was hoping he would include a message of, “Even though times are tough, things will get better eventually” but there was no upside, only dread, which I totally get, but it would be nice to try and lift our spirits with jokes or a bit of optimism (even towards the end) instead of just going, “Yah this sucks. Everything sucks.” I know he talked about how he doesn’t feel like joking at a time like this but I’d argue that humor is needed most in crappy situations. I think Bo did the best he could with the room he was given and the directing was pretty good but I can understand how visually it’s a bit boring. I mean I have a lot of the spinning lights he has. It would’ve been awesome if the songs were 2d animated instead or something, hell, why wasn’t “How the World Works” animated?

I honestly put it in one of my top spots. Did a great job helping me cope with depression in a time where it was worst. Honestly 100% understand why others don’t like it but it holds a special place in my heart.

I don't think that you should view this as a comedy special it's more of a documentary on Bo and his struggles of already having depression and then being hit with this pandemic and with how that affected him

I've been meaning to rewatch Inside. I saw it the day it came out and haven't revisited it since, beyond hearing a few individual songs on Spotify, here and there. I admit, it's very overrated. People are treating Bo like he's the second coming, and it's like, okay, let's calm down. He's human, like the rest of us. Nevertheless, Inside is easily his best work. It shows a level of maturity and grace that I don't really think I've really seen from him since he wrote "Art is Dead." Words Words Words and what. were still mostly just fun, then he tried to make some actual points with Make Happy. It was decent, but my least favorite special; I definitely got some sanctimonious, pretentious vibes, there, and it annoyed me when people took it so seriously. Inside, on the other hand, was Make Happy done right. It felt genuine and really showed his potential to continue to make great art in the future and get better and better.

I’m not gonna watch the video as listening to differing opinions really pisses me off, but I’ve found most people who didn’t like this are either mentally stable or wanted a comedy, which really in no way means the special is any worse, it’s just not intended for them.

This is actually one of my favorite reviews, an honest review that isn't just shitting on it. But criticizing it and how it's just good. They aren't mad about him being sad or making a film. I agree with many of there points as well and I loved it. So yeah nice on Diesel.

Well it wasn't much of a comedy special honestly some jokes here and there but nevertheless most of the songs have a serious tone to them which can relate to alot of people who struggle with certain things. For me I loved every song and loved the cinematography, but I can understand your opinion!
