Rode it several times northbound when it was a non-Amtrak, Southern Railway train. Always got a car that was the 13th of 15 cars. The last two cars must have been deadheads. They sat beyond the platform and no one boarded them. Those were big trains in the Summer; four E8 passenger diesels and 15 cars. They used to put a dome car on, southbound, for the run to Birmingham and New Orleans.

That's awesome!!! U read up a lot on it hack in those days, though never understood the domestic car there in that section. Not exactly what I'd call the most scenic, but. I bet it was still very nice!

@@THEFINALHAZARD I never got to ride in the dome because I never rode the train southbound, but it was originally used on the Wabash on their St. Louis/Detroit streamliner, The Bluebird.

I drive past this station all the time on the highway. I once an Amtrak sitting at this station with loco 199. The next day, I watched a KZitem video with 199 in it! I also saw another video of train-hopping where the train that the guy was riding passed right by here.

Why aren't the railcars Superliners, double-decked? Tony 59-year-old Black Air Force VET 🇺🇸

Because the Crescent travels up to New York Penn, and the Hudson River Tunnels as well as the tunnels at Baltimore are too small to allow for Superliner cars.

@@THEFINALHAZARD Ooh, ok. Now I see why. The same applies to Amtrak's "The Silver Star" and "The Silver Meteor". Those trains travel up the eastern coast as well, with single-leveled railcars. I suppose no double-stacked containers, on some CSX freight trains also. Thank you Nordic! 😀

why is there a line on the platform to board the train? Why do they only open one or two doors?

Why doesnt the train stop closer to the stairway vice making passengers walk the length of the train?......but then from my own experiences Amtrak was never customer friendly to begin with.

Well this is an old video, now the coaches are up near the front and its the sleeper passengers that have to walk further. But the train has to spot there because the engines would be off the platform otherwise not accessible for the engineer, also there is a spot for the amtrak baggage carts to turn around and that drive way crosses the tracks

I now I'm commenting late but, that's quite a long walk for a handicapped passenger. I noticed a golf cart staged by the train as you were walking to get to your coach car. Do you recall if Amtrak was using that golf cart to assist passengers? Also, is there an elevator which can be used instead of those stairs?
@THEFINALHAZARD

There is, yes. Also they do use those carts for handicapped passengers as well as the elderly if they so desire it

@@1stGeorgiaGirl not a problem! I recently took a trip from Temple TX to Lancaster PA on Amtrak. It was great. We were 6 hours late into Chicago, no Amtrak comp'd me free food on the train, taxi, food, and overnight hotel in Chicago(the Swissôtell, at that!), And ended up at the end of my trip refunding that portion of my trip

So passengers must wait for the train to fully pull into the platform before any passenger may set foot down onto it themselves?! With all you herded boarders milling by there, whereabouts within the tight space alongside their wagon may smokers puff or others breathe some fresh air? That canopy's the strangest-looking one I`ve spied crowning some platform..oh well.
@THEFINALHAZARD

It depends on the station, but in general yes, passengers must wait. Also, yes in extended stops such as Atlanta, Charlotte, Greensboro, and other ones where they are stopped for at least 10 minutes, then people may get a fresh air/smoke break. Also indeed, Atlanta's Peachtree Station is kind of, "unique" you can say. It was originally just a Regional type station back in the pre-Amtrak days, though they closed the main Atlanta station and Peachtree became the main and only Station in Atlanta.

trainrover Stations like New York, Philadelphia, Albany and several others don't allow passengers to permit onto the platform prior or during the arrival of the Amtrak train. Like he said, it depends on the station. Sometimes in philly, they'll let you prepare to board before the train arrives. I remember one in particular prior to boarding the Acela Express #2128.
@RailRide

Atlanta in particular holds boarding passengers till all the exiting riders have made their way up from the platform. There is simply no room for both groups of people to be on the platform at the same time.. The existing station was never intended to serve long-distance trains--it was originally just a commuter stop. And yes, everyone knows the current station is inadequate--there has been talk for _years_ of building a replacement station elsewhere. But nobody can agree on where to put it, and if they figure that part out, then there's the fact that no one wants to fund it.
