I do think that most line 4 Surfers know which board they are performing best on.... And probably they have ridden a Ton of Boards at this point. But line 3 and lower surfers do really benefit from this video series. However the content is still really really interesting.

@ombesurf I’d love to see a video that discusses the progression from line 3 to 4 specifically related to what to do for a nice drop in (how not to nose dive on a more hollow wave - sounds like the board needs enough rocker - but in terms of mind and body) and then also how to develop the bottom and top turn to ride more vertically.

I bought my first high performance surfboard, its getting made and ll be ready in 10 days, cant wait to try those tips. they are golden. if i could give a sugestion of videos. it would for sure wave selection, where to sit in the line up, knowing which place is the best spot by looking at it. probably thats my biggest bottleneck today. im like mentally doing a carve but when i get to the beach im always at the worse spot, seems like waves are always better where im not 😢

I thought I was line 3 until I saw my footage from the Wavepool. I am line 2 sometimes and on a good day or wave or turn I am line 3. My question is, is it a logical progression to go from 2 to 3 or should we be trying to skip straight to 4. Also, I think I have a line 2 board (fish) and a line 4 board (JS Raging Bull). May need to invest in a squash tail for line 3. Can never have too many boards LoL. Lastly, if I want to be coached by Clayton what is the next step? I thought it would be good to start with a retreat on the Gold Coast (I am in Melbourne) but there doesn't seem to be any planned until next year. Love the content. Cheers, Martin

Martin don’t skip lines. Each line is the journey and rite of passage. Enjoy learning what it has to offer. We are looking at shorter 3 day retreat options during summer.

Can I ask how body types affect board selection? For heavier set guys, above 100kg, how does the progression work?
@ombesurf

That’s more thickness distribution throughout the board. Your knowledge and skill needs to be taken into account

Yes the feedback is invaluable. Take a bad line and the board suck. Take a good line and you’re bulletproof

Great series. Problem is I’m not sure line 4 or the board will work in my crappy UK South Coast waves. I’m sure this is the same for a lot of people watching. Is it possible to get vertical when grovelling on wind-slop?
@ombesurf

You probably need a line 3 board for the slop
@peterarnold4006

Absolutely 💯 percent chappy UK waves, so yes a line 3 board. I favour the square tail for a bit of drive when catching the wave, also an intermediate between the fish and pointy round tail

I would get a RNF 96. Line 3 with the ability to be line 4 if you get your foot back and size the board right.

Got a few really good take aways from your series! As a surfer coming from skateboarding I see myself performing at all 4 stages quite often, probably most often in stage 3 with experience in each stage. It was also easier to assess my progression in skating having started much younger and conditions are not relevant in the same ad they to a surfer! How can I better assess where I am in my surfing progress? (Which is both kind of clear and not clear to me). Also do you have any thoughts on types of boards that might benefit x-skaters or people who have an unusual balance of competency? :)

Watch a video of yourself surf. Look at the wake trials off your board. Changer lateral lines to flowing top to bottom lines

What is the purpose of a round pin twin fin for small surf? This is one thing I don’t get. If a pin is for large powerful surf why put it on a board designed for small waves. I have been seeing this over the last few years.

It adds control in powerful hollower waves. It also allows smoother carves as water follows the outline. It does slow the board down in smaller waves as it doesn’t get as much lift as a wide swallow tail would.
