Great little engine the 4-108 PERKINS Diesel, had one in a Commer PB motor home year’s ago,because it was so slow and noisy I got a Overdrive gearbox out of a Humber Sceptre scrapper and converted it to mate up to the 108 engine. The difference it made was beyond my wildest Dream’s,it was now capable of 65 mph and 45 mpg and left the VW ones for dead on hills and inclines. Had some great times in that old bus,happy days.

Fantastic idea. I need to pull the MD7A on my CD30 to fix the shaft log and I think I’m going to go with this approach. Thank you!

Faced with a similar problem recently, lifting the Perkins 4-108 in my Hurley motor-sailor. It is under a hatch in the cockpit/wheelhouse floor, with a fixed roof, so I can't use an external crane. I built a timber frame inside the wheelhouse with 4 pulleys near the roof directly over the engine mounts and ran ropes up, over the pulleys and aft to a 2 tonne ATV electric winch lashed to the pushpit. Took a few days to design and build it though. This allowed me to lift the engine 2 metres (in 2 stages) close the hatch and place it on the wheelhouse floor for servicing. Also got it from there right outside through the rear canopy using the main halyard and boom.

we quite often had a 4108 in our kitchen, my mum hated it; when my dad brought his work home.

I've watched this before but had to watch it again because of your recent post on the CD Board. Nicely done!

Very impressive. I need to pull my prop shaft, and therefore my engine, (unexpectedly) and have duplicated your setup. It's perfect, and though amassing all the gear is a bit costly, it's less than a yard crane charge and can be done at my dock. It appears you gave significant thought to each piece, and I haven't really come up with anything which could improve on it.

I pulled the same engine, Perkins 4.108 out of my sailboat. I used a $65 aluminum stepladder & landscape timber from home Depot. A $42, 500lb chain hoist from Harbor freight. Some of those ratcheting straps. Chain hoist lift the engine... Ratchet strap about a foot away from the chain hoist on the landscape timber, tighten the ratchet strap and it swings the engine 6in... Then lower the chain hoist and it swings six more inches a total of a foot!...with the engine weight is now on the straps, slide the chain hoist up against the straps and lift the engine with the chain hoist... Slide the strap on the landscape timber another foot away!... Repeat the process and you inch the engine along the direction of the landscape!... It worked for me and that's how I installed it back onto the engine saddle!

Handy! My back is still mad at me for using brute force and just pulling the engine out of it's cubby hole. But I was young and foolish then. I'm no longer young...

I duplicated the setup, and was able to pull my Perkins, repair the shaft seal, and replace the engine in one day. If anyone in the SF Bay Area needs to do this, I'd be happy to rent the rig to you... and help offset the cost of amassing all the gear! How did you get it out the companionway from there? Good job!

I didn't. It sat there while I replaced the engine bed, then I put it back. Motor never left the cabin.

The trolley, and the hoist (both 1,000lb capacity) are both from Amazon. Transmission stand (2,000lb capacity) is from a local Harbor Freight (too big/heavy to ship) The aluminum I beam is 6x4x3/8 - 6' long) from Mcmaster.com. Also need some short lengths of 1/4" chain, shackles, and long (3') wood blocking to spread the load across the bridge deck. Be sure to drill matching holes in the beam and the stand, so you can bolt them together - really don't want the beam to fall off! Also, drill holes in the aft end of the beam to screw (wood screws) the aft end of the beam to the blocking. Be sure the blocking is wider than the companionway, to spread the load, and also so the beam can't be fall into the cabin if the rig shifts forward. Good Luck!

I think hallberg Rassy has an access panel in the cockpit sol to remove the engine and on a friend's Pacific Seacraft 40 has engine access in the cockpit that I believe you can pull the engine out. Doing engine inspections are a pain to crawl down though this hole

Hi, Thank you for posting an interesting set-up for removing an inboard engine. Is your "I beam" made of Aluminum?
@svTIARA

Yes, the I beam is aluminum, but steel would work fine if it fits the trolley.

About how long did this take?
@svTIARA

Most of the time is spent disconnecting fuel lines, electrical, motor mounts, shaft coupling, exhaust system etc; maybe 4 hours. Could be another hour if you have a water heater connected to the engine. Setting up the gantry, maybe another half hour. The lift itself then goes quickly, half hour tops. Like most boat things, all the time is in the set up. Good luck!

Now I replace the rusted engine bed, and put the motor back in. I also swapped in a new starter while access is easy. :)
