Things to consider? Ice or warming of heavy snowfall coating plastic covers are the two biggest failures of shrink wrap. Without insurance you can suffer expensive damages to windshields and control panel areas of your boats. There are criteria that professionals use to string up boats that are based off lengths which convert to stanchions and the amount of stringers needed to support spacial gaps in the plastic and angle of incline ( so wet snow will fall off and not turn into a block of ice). Covers are easy to install and worry free when you know the proper method, when in doubt add a stanchion and more banding, keep your center band height high enough so wet snow will fall from a dirty cover, don't leave large gaps of unsupported plastic.

Just came across this, so I don’t know much about you/your boat. Good job!! Question... not knowing if your boat is diesel or gas powered (looks like most of your stuff is diesel), have you considered any issues or concerns with gas fumes?? I would caution anyone who wants to do this themselves to consider the danger of gas fumes and open flame torches. Could spell disaster!!
@1UTUBEUSERNAME

It is a concern if you smell fuel. Fuel systems are NOT supposed to vent into the air. They are closed systems. if you smell fuel, fix the problem and of course, keep the flame away.

good chance it is 6 mil could possibly be seven or eight my shrink wrap I use is the blue 6 mil and I have reused it since 2010 2011 season this is a full 12 winters of the same shrink wrap just removing storing it and reinstalling it each year and only needed to tape seams on occasion and a new door once in a while. I store in my own yard Northeast Ohio Winters I also put in 10 Dr shrink vents. you only heat shrink it on the original install and from then on you just use it like you would any canvas to recover your boat using the same uprights in the same positions along with the same belly straps

At our marina, there is a building with an addition that is roughly 20 feet wide by 40 feet long. They used shrink wrap for the sides of that addition. They use it to store yard equipment in. They have also used it for a covered walkway. I saw a stand alone building, rough 40 x 60 that was metal frame that used shrink wrap for the roof and the sides. Some sort of storage area for equipment.

Is there an advantage to using the shrink wrap instead of just a big tarp?
@BellavistaPEI
2 жыл бұрын
Yes...shrink wrap is better for many reasons...#1- less "flap"...if installed properly, it will be tight and hopefully remain tight thus not flapping against a gel coat or paint job....#2- again, if installed correctly, with a nice steep slope, its more likely to have any snow load slide off as the temperature rises through the day....#3- if getting inside to work on it through the winter is something you would like to do, you can do so simply by having a zipper door installed. It doesn't take anything away from the structure itself and is easily installed. I could go on but this is 3 years later from when you asked and I'm sure you've already decided for yourself by now! LOL!! CHEERS!!

Very informative. I recently bought a boat and will try this. On the vent, when you cut a hole then cover the hole on three sides, leaving the lower open for air to escape, because the shrink material is taunt, it won't tear larger than where you cut?
@fitzsfixes
6 жыл бұрын
mark coffey yes, that's how it works. Don't worry at all about the material ripping. It won't. You'll see after you work with it. After you've heated it and it shrinks and cools down, it's incredibly strong. Good luck and thanks for watching

good video I too shrink wrap my own boat 30 ft by 9 1/2 beam overall Rinker Fiesta V since 2005. the first years I would do it every three or four years reusing the same wrap but since the winter of 2010-2011 here in Northeast Ohio I have reused the same shrink wrap every year. no you never do reheat it all I've had to do is retape some loose seams over the years and replaced a couple zipper doors about $15 a piece. all the framework and support straps are all kept in the same original position along with all the belly straps. remove it carefully in the spring roll it up in a big garbage bag and reinstall it on a nice windless warmer day in the late fall. retighten all your belly straps on the next warmer day and when it cools in the evening everything will be as tight as when you originally did it. I purchase all my shrink wrap tape and strapping and vents from Dr shrink.com. my torch is the best Harbor Freight $27 piezoelectric start torch. I do have a good shrink-fast gun that I purchase used on eBay for $75 but only use it on new shrink wrap around the perimeter and lower section when doing a new shrink wrap job. the nice thing about storing my boat at home is during a very heavy snow fall I can go out with a long handle brush and nudge all the heavy snow right off if the sun doesn't come out enough to warm it up. yes this is the 12th full winter I am using the same shrink wrap and it just may go another year after this. my total investment over the years was for 120 ft of 6 mil Blue by 24 ft shrink wrap good for three wraps 3/4 inch by 1500 ft roll of strapping several big rolls of 4-in and 2-in shrink wrap tape and a dozen stick on vents brought the total to about $600 which also included the price for the gun and strapping tightening tool and miscellaneous. that averages out for me to about 35 or $40 per year over the last 17 years.
