To answer your question, we don't do this step. You are absolutely correct about that being in the manual and it is the 'most correct' way to set your seawater pump up for storage. With you storing your impeller this way it will likely lengthen the life of it. We normally don't do that step because we want all of our winterized engines to have every hose, drain plug, valve, ect… reinstalled back on the engine so that it can be fired up in the spring with nothing left to be installed.

Good points you make here. Since the thermostat housing is one of the high points on the engine you will not lose all the antifreeze if you remove the impeller. However you will lose the antifreeze in the hose that runs from the raw water pump to the thermostat housing.

Winterization applies to more than simple freeze protection. While storing your boat indoors at a temperature above freezing will likely prevent freeze damage. However the manitenance aspects of teh winterization should not be eliminated.

Nice video but there problem is that there will be no antifreeze in the engine until the thermostat opens. You could always remove the thermostat and manually fill it.

+Robert Cuadro - Read the comments below...Removing the T-Stat is not necessary. Once the water is drained from the block, the entire engine will fill with antifreeze.

I know this is an old video but can someone tell me why drain it first? Why not just get the engine up to operating temp and then run antifreeze through it?

One more thing for the draining side of things. I do not run antifreeze through. (I learnt this the hard way) you guys do not show/have a hoses for the external heater under the dash, there are two hose that come to the back of the motor on the port side, one goes into the recirculating pump and the return come back in just under the intake manifold. They both need to come off and blown out, I use a compressor.

Thanks for the video. Just a quick question since you did not show what you did after the antifreeze started coming out of the exhaust. Do you turn the motor off when you see it coming out? Is that it? Do you just leave the antifreeze in there over the winter? Other question would be for when summer starts. Do you just back it in the lake and go? I also did not see you mention anything about the impeller. Do you guys prefer to change it with this winterization or when summer starts?

I could use some help on the transmission oil change. The manual says there is a filter and clean or change if needed and is there a drain plug?

Ironic this is mentioned as it was similar to a concern I had. I usually leave all the drain plugs out and pull the impeller like you mentioned. But I DO like the idea of filling with antifreeze to prevent corrosion. SO, if I do the process like in the video and then pull the impeller, will I lose all my RV antifreeze? I guess I am mostly concerned about the antifreeze being in the block and manifolds to help cut down in corrosion. Hindsight, I should probably just replace the impeller every year, but I'm cheap!

Just purchased a 2000 Malibu Response LX, and looking to winterized for -30c. I have seen several videos similar to this one where once the antifreeze is in the system they take the extra step of draining the antifreeze. I plan on removing the raw water pump impeller and replacing it next year. I understand the benefit of corrosion prevention with anti freeze, but at the temperatures my boat will be exposed to is it not better to drain and open everything? This way only small pockets of antifreeze will be left.....help.

Manual says to take out the water pump impeller coat it with Vaseline and keep in an airtight container, do you do this step?
@MegaZoomer

I question whether Vaseline is the best choice for this procedure. I know that Vaseline will degrade o-rings. Perhaps silicone o-ring grease is a better choice.

What about winterizing the heater core? Does this method do that as well?
@skibumpmc
9 жыл бұрын
+Layton Burkart - You probably already know this but, YES, the heater core is part of the cooling system, so the antifreeze will circulate through the entire system, including your heater core. FYI, my local Malibu dealer, Munson Marine, skipped this step (adding antifreeze) the first year that I had my heater installed. I figured this out the next spring when I turned the heater on and it started blowing hot steam, instead of air. Obviously, the core was cracked from frozen water left in the core. Without using antifreeze, as in the video, there might be some way to drain the core, but it would be tough to get at, as my core is installed under the dash pod. Since ruining my heater core, I've always used antifreeze for winterizing. Aside from the heater core, using antifreeze to prevent internal rust and keeping the cooling system seals/impeller from drying out is a really good idea. FYI, I never went back to that dealer again...They said it wasn't their fault, but after arguing with them, they gave me a replacement core which I installed myself.

+skibumpmc We usually drain the heater core by blowing compressed air through the lines to make sure all the water is removed. Then hook it back up so antifreeze will cycle through it.

what's the point in draining the water? why not just run it with the antifreeze until it flushes the system
@ericvonderlinden8938
5 жыл бұрын
The theory is two fold. 1. you drain any crap that may be in any of the hoses such as debris leaves etc.which in general isn't a bad thing to do annually 2. by removing the water the concentration level of the antifreeze is higher giving you greater protection. On this video it appears they did this on a cold engine. If you ran antifreeze through it before the thermostat opened up you may find there are pockets of water that are that don't mix with antifreeze. I guess I'm obnoxious, i run mine to make sure it's at normal operating temperature. Drain the blook quickly then run antifreeze through the system until it's flowing pink for a minute or two.
