To amplify... This footage is of Bob Dylan playing a surprise set with The Heartbreakers at Willie Nelson’s 2023 Farm Aid Festival on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Noblesville, Indiana. This was his first return to the annual charity event that he helped to create 38 years ago, on September 22, 1985. According to Rolling Stone magazine, Dylan came on stage with the Heartbreakers, unannounced and in the dark, at about 10:20 pm on the Saturday night. About 1 minute or so into the set, Dylan starts to sign "Maggie's Farm", the lights come up a little and the audience then realises who it is! They played three songs - ‘Maggie’s Farm’, ‘Positively 4th Street’ and ‘Ballad of a Thin Man’. Dylan played at the inaugural Farm Aid back in 1985 with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Marvellous, marvellous stuff...
@ArturArtist
9 ай бұрын
This was NOT Dylan's first return to Farm Aid since the original event in 1985, which he helped give rise to through his remarks at Live Aid a few months earlier, Dylan also appeared a second time, again with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, at Farm Aid II on July 4, 1986. The main event was held at Manor Downs Racetrack in Manor, TX that year. But Dylan, Petty & the Heartbreakers, as well as the Grateful Dead all joined the show via a live satellite feed from Rich Stadium in Buffalo, NY. I know because I'll never forget the first time I saw Dylan perform "Across the Borderline," a song written by Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, and Jim Dickinson, during the Farm Aid II broadcast. I'd never heard the song before and his performance was arresting. Someone included this mistake in an early article about Dylan's surprise appearance at Farm Aid 2023, and it keeps getting picked up and repeated every time anyone mentions Dylan's Farm Aid performance this year.

Saw this live. I had no idea what was happening after Neil Young apparently cut his set short. The monitors were turned off, I was too far back to get a good look at who was on stage, and the possibility that Bob Dylan would show up and play a surprise set didn't even register as a possibility. So when he started playing, I thought, "They're having a Bob Dylan tribute band introduce Willie?" That then became, "Hey, this guy even sounds like Bob Dylan. Pretty cool." Then like halfway through Positively 4th Street, and after noticing that more people had pulled their phones out to record this performance than literally anything else the entire day, I leaned over to my gf and said, "Holy shit that's actually Bob Dylan." Then I got home and read that not only was Bob Dylan, it was Bob Dylan AND the Heartbreakers. Absolutely wild night.

Everything about this is pure, unfiltered Bob. The weird descending guitar on Maggies, the incredible phrasing on Positively, and the "i'm not done" guitar solo after the clearly rehearsed ending on Thin Man. So good. And I love that Benmont plays those familiar organ licks fearlessly and with intent. God love them all.

Bob opened up doors of perception for the multitudes who were listening. The one thing about him I get the most is that he is telling people to just be yourself as he obviously was himself, shifting with the winds of change. As a Christian, I can tell you he was really onto something with what are recognized as his 3 Christian albums, but in many other songs as well, and in many other ways. But times pass, and in the days to come, the things of this world will be remembered no more.

Willy Nelson is 90, both Keith Richard’s and Mick Jagger are 80, Ronnie Woods is 79, Paul McCartney is 81, Ringo Starr is 83, to name a few that are up around there, and god willing they’ll be around for a while longer to keep entertaining us.

I actually liked the fact is just thrown together and they just have fun winging it. I think Bob likes it that way.

Another legend, Bob Dylan, an American treasure, 82 years old now and he sounded very clear and very Dylan singing Positively 4th Street, and Ballad of a Thin Man, from the Highway 61 Revisited period. 4th Street was released as a single only in Sept. 1965, and Highway 61 Revisited, released in Aug. 1965, one of his best albums, in the top 3, along with Blonde on Blonde and Bringing it all Home, all released within a short period 1965 and 1966. Possibly, one of his last concerts...

You are 82 and I’m 78. Took your advice all my life and was a winner. I heard what you didn’t say. I know how you think. I’m alone now but I love you Bob Dylan! Always will!
