I just love "Visions Of Johanna", so atmospheric and evocative - probably my favorite Dylan song.. Nice review as usual John.

Good review. What an amazing year 1966 was for music - three giant albums: Blonde on Blonde, Revolver and Pet Sounds - all three still have huge influence on musicians today plus 1966 was also the year that the American West Coast bands were starting to filter through to the UK. I was a teenager back in '66 and boy did all this music have an impact - you could sense that there was a change in what could be done in so-called 'pop music'.

Enjoyable. This is a difficult album to review, because it is so good that every track needs a review to do it justice. In passing, he did the Budokan version of I Want You at at least one of the Earls Court concerts in 78 and it was stunning. A perfect example of Dylan's habit of revisiting and transforming his back catalogue.

This album is absolute brilliance. Part of me does hope that it was released on 5/16/66 because you could argue that would've been pop music's finest hour with the release of two seminal classics on the same day. The lyrics to me on this album are why Dylan is regarded by so many as the finest songwriter of his generation in that they are abstract, obscure and yet somehow still resonate with listeners. It's very easy for a songwriter to get tied up in his prose where the words affect the ears in a positive manner but when broken down, you have no earthly idea what they are about. Dylan was one of the very few to be able to walk that line effortlessly. "One Of Us Must Know" to me hits home on so many levels as to say I've been in that situation, a few times in my life would be an understatement. I'm glad you brought out the fact that this was the first major double album in the history of pop music, something that I think continues to be recognized by Columbia to this day in their reissues of the album on compact disc where they offer the consumer a choice of whether to purchase a single disc or a double disc package. Additionally I know Dylan put out a massive box set on this record last year priced at something like $800 which I almost jumped on but was a tad bit out of my price range. Hopefully one day he'll put a more affordable version of that box set on the market with all of the music but without all the bells and whistles that priced the box set out of range of most fans. Cheers John!

Yes quite amazing that between 1965-66 Bob produced Bringing it all back home , Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde whilst between late 65 and early Summer 67 the Beatles produced Rubber Soul , Revolver and Pepper . Also 3 of the albums regularly in the top 10 of all time came out within 3 months Blonde on Blonde , Pet Sounds and Revolver. Also love the cover picture .. coolest Bob ever

Another great review, John. This record is definitely a landmark, as music and as cultural artifact. Digital media has made obsolete the notion of a "double album" I suppose, but I've always liked the idea of them. I'd definitely take this one to the proverbial desert island, along with Electric Ladyland, the White Album, Physical Graffiti, and Quadrophenia, which I prefer over Tommy. Oh, and almost forgot Exile On Main Street...but a Top 6? Might as well try for 10. Maybe later.

Great review, John. This was the first Dylan album I really 'got' (as in liked!) It's difficult to imagine where all that inspiration came from, although amphetamines were probably at least partly responsible. I've launched a new Beatles channel btw, in case you're wondering about the different pic and name. Cheers.

As great an album (double album) Blonde on Blonde is, imagine in what even greater esteem it would be held if the outtake “She’s Your Lover Now” had been included.

I like the album, but I always feel that the poetic angle to Bob's lyrics, works better when the music has a more pared down acoustic feel. There are some classics on this album, though, for sure, including "Visions Of Johanna" and "Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands". John Wesley Harding works better for me.
