Great review! I always got the sense that Dylan was slightly wary or unconvinced about working with Lanois - maybe not wanting 'the Lanois sound' to overshadow his songs. Either way, both of the albums the Canadian produced for Dylan are masterpieces (to my ears) and stand the test of time. Yes, the Lanois sound creates an incredible atmosphere to frame the songs, but Lanois' greatest contribution was simply inspiring Dylan to raise his game and deliver better material, and stop him getting complacent or (whisper it) lazy. Dylan's quality control had dropped slightly mid-career, but each time he worked with Lanois it inspired not just a classic album, but also a fresh period of creative inspiration subsequently.

This is a tremendous achievement by producer Lanois. He somehow managed to organize a large group, and do whatever was necessary to make it sound coherent and economical. All the while getting resistance from Dylan.

Nice episode, thanks. I can't agree more, for me this is also the most exciting (set of) record(s) I bought in even a few years. I've always loved Time Out Of Mind, but it somehow always depressed me. This new version I've listened to over and over, which doesn't happen anymore so often, and I just love it. The outtakes are brilliant, as is the live set. All in all great packaging, photography, and it sounds just excellent.

Nice, Mazzy. I absolutely love this box. It’s been a constant on my turntable since it arrived. The version of Not Dark Yet (version 1) that was released before the box is soooo good. The song positively bounces with positive energy; a completely different feel from the version on Time Out of Mind. One of his best vocal deliveries, EVER! And, as my friend Simon says, Dylan could release a whole album of different versions of I Can’t Wait. And so so much more good stuff. I’m really glad I went for the deluxe vinyl box. Already one of the prize pieces in my collection. Thanks for your feature review, Mazzy!

Nice overview. I like to think of the main album remix as the day mix. It sounds great during the day or on shuffle alongside any other ModBob releases. And the original as the night mix. It has a sound of its own that’s best experienced by itself well into the evening hours.

Great video and really thought provoking! For me, Time out of Mind was one of the early entry points and maybe the album that I connected with the most with the Dylan catalogue (Although I love every album of his, save for “knocked out loaded” which is below par in my opinion). Also, remembering back to 1995 when U2, Brian Eno and Lanois were king - and artists like Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash were being “reinvented” with the likes of Rick Ruban. It was a fresh take on Dylan from the direction Dylan was heading with albums like “Good as I Been to You” or “World Gone Wrong” and brought it a unique sound as if Dylan was dreaming up these emotional filled songs on the spot. Having someone like Bob Dylan collaborating with fellow Canadian Daniel Lanois again struck a chord in me. Now that this new box set came out basically erasing Daniel Lanois from the album it was both enlightening and a bit sad. After listening to the “new 2022 remix” and hearing this unique sounding album from Dylan’s catalogue stripped back making it sound like say “Modern Times” left me empty. This fresh listen to the 2022 remix really highlighted what both individuals contributed on the album and exposed the tension that must have been in the room at the time of making it. What I took away from listening to this new remix was how Lanois probably took liberties in the studio playing overtop of Dylan’s songs with his steel guitar and sound treatments. For me, giving Dylans songs a “dreamy/ otherworld” feel to these what are/were “traditional blues style” songs; playing overtop of Dylan like there was a dialogue between Dylan and Lanois throughout the album. If I had to guess, this probably rubbed Dylan the wrong way in that it veered Time out of mind in a different direction, took liberties with Dylan and his songs and made Dylans album a true collaboration with Lanois and Dylan - almost having equal parts. This added with Lanois wanting Dylan to do multiple takes in a certain way took power away from Dylan that I doubt he agreed to must be the reason why Frosty took back the steering wheel? I’m genuinely glad you enjoyed it (it sounds like you may be enjoyed it more than the original?) but for me it sounds like something akin to Roger Waters remixed “Dark side of the Moon” or “Wish you were here” and erased all of David Gilmore’s guitar parts or something. I really disliked discovering that an album that I love is hated so much by some of the people who made it. It would be sad but interesting to hear what Lanois's take is on this new box set is or if the two actually enjoyed each other, what Lanios would have added to all this extra material that is added to this new box set. Again, great video!

Thanks for your take on this. I think I enjoy both versions equally but the new version is a revelation to me right now. Clearing what Lanois added on and possibly bringing it back to Dylan’s original vision. The OG is a stunner though and Dylan needed a shot of love in a way. I loved he’s two blues folk records prior to TOOM, but it was time for him to shake things up. Great lyrics and a different production did just that.

Thanks Mazzy, looked forward to your take. I came away from your vid still unsure on dropping the $$ on this one. I’m pretty much a completist and have seen all his tours since the early 70’s. That said, it sounds a bit bloated as a package. Some very poor live stuff and inclusion of stuff already released on Bootlegs previous. WTF? I have been streaming it and yeah I’m sure I’ll buy it at some point. Not sure it has given me the Wow that I got from hearing the outtakes from Self Portrait and others.

i had intentions of having this the day it was released (as i'd been eyeing your dylan boxsets in previous videos) but it wasn't to be. you aren't a fan of making "unboxing" videos but this is a worthwhile exception to the rule. i thought "highlands" was going to have completely different lyrics. randy newman made joke about dylan and the dead making listeners sit through their sets in the summer sun eating snow cones. i'm more forgiving. thanks.

Great video, Mazzy. I can't wait to hear the remix of the album & a bunch of the outtakes. The captioning at the bottom of this video is hysterical. It's like a SNL skit with the way it tries to pronounce Lanois every time you say it. They had it as "And Wall" or "Lan NWA" & others. LOL. It's a little distracting, but the captioning is that bad on all videos I watch on here.

I was only going to get the 2 CD set for "Fragments". I liked the new remix and the bonus CD more than I thought I would. I found the new remix to be different, in a good way. Everything is clearer, without the "overproduction" of the original album. Not that it's bad to begin with. The new remix is just another way to listen to it. I liked the bonus CD a lot. And I was going to be done with it. But, Amazon US had the big box set on for an amazing deal. So, I ordered and received the 5 CD set. And I was wrong, the 5 CD or 10 LP set is worth your while, if you're a fan of the "Time Out Of Mind" album. I only had the 1 CD edition of "The Bootleg Series, Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs". So, the bonus 5th CD was worth it to me. I like just about all of the session tracks, but many of the audience sourced live tracks weren't good to me. But, I've never been a fan of those. I did enjoy the three soundboard live tracks, though.

The Dylan/Dead tour was one of the worst pieces of crap I’ve ever seen, and probably the last time i saw The Dead. The Dead had gotten too big, the scene changed to mostly what would become Phish fans(Ugg. Lol) and the end had been coming for a while, Touch of Grey had come out, and it was over for me. I had better music and shows to see at much smaller intimate venues. Maybe I saw them once at Shoreline in the 90s, but I may have just stayed in the parking lot. Not sure. Anyway, it sucked. So bad. He was better with Petty, which I also saw live.
