On March 3, 2000 Bob Jones III appeared on CNN's Larry King Live to discuss Bob Jones University's anti-miscegenation rule. During the interview, Jones stated that BJU had "dropped the rule." However, according to The New York Times, anti-miscegenation doctrine continued to be taught on BJU's campus after this interview aired. On March 6, 2000, Bob Jones III preached a chapel message during which he taught that "most people viewed interracial marriage as an unwise decision." In addition, The New York Times reported that Bob Jones University had indeed not dropped the rule. Instead, Bob Jones III stated that he would only provide an exemption to the anti-miscegenation rule if students' provided a note from their parents.
In this video, regarding the school's anti-miscegenistic beliefs, Jones claims, "students never hear it preached." However, a link has been provided below showing a strongly worded letter that Jones wrote to a student following a chapel message about BJU's anti-miscegenistic beliefs. This letter from 1995 clearly contradicts Jones's claim that "there have been four, five, six generations of students that graduated from there have never heard this preached in our chapel or taught in our school."
Finally, Jones states that "we can't point to a verse in the Bible that says you shouldn't date or marry interracial. . .no, we can't back it up with a verse from the Bible. . .we never have tried to. . .we have never tried to do that." In response, please see the links to the 1960 and 1986 brochures that BJU published. The 1960 publication is entitled "Is Segregation Scriptural," and the 1986 publication is entitled "Race Relations."
