This is right before he did his brilliant sit-com, The Bob Newhart Show. He' talking about filming the pilot for it. Amazingly, he's still alive 47 years later.

You'll notice Bob never really hits the punchline, he leaves it to the viewer. Takes a lot of confidence. Genius.

Bob was a HEAVY, HEAVY SMOKER. Back in the 80s he was rushed to the hospital, and was told to give up the cancer sticks or DIE.

Watching Cavett’s listless interview with Newhart makes me realize more than ever just how great Carson was.

I have nothing against newhart, but he was never that remarkable to me. Cavett was rude with the ashtray, he made a point of clanking it after Newhart dropped the ashes o the carpet.

Bob Newhart was a great comedic figure, with his wonderfully dry humor. And Dick Cavett was one of the most annoying and biggest blowhard assholes of that era. No wonder he only lasted 2 years on ABC.
