I was at that show - I'm broke and could only afford a lawn seat - and the crowd was ridiculous. A large chunk of them were drunk, and they were O&A fans and not fans of comedy. All those idiots wanted was a two-hour Jim Norton set, so they were gonna boo nearly anyone else who came out on stage. They booed Jimmy Schubert off the stage, and the poor guy basically had a nervous breakdown. Patrice Oneal got booed just because the Philly crowd wasn't as familiar with him, even though he had been on O&A's show for years and was on it nearly daily when they were SiriusXM-exclusive. And then they booed Burr, and a comedy legend was born.

@chubbyurma While it is a great moment, I wouldn't categorize it as "crowd control" in the same context as Burr's Philly rant. For Springsteen, the entire crowd is in awe and worship of him as an artist and celebrity, so they are already compliant the silence serves as a mirror to the tone of the artist transitioning from being loud (the music) to quiet (the speaking). Specifically what made the Burr rant so impressive was that it was a *hostile* crowd that *did not* favor the performers and Burr stormed the crowd like an angry Age of Empires priest; 15 Wololos later and half the enemy was converted.

Someone said that if Bob ever had anything bad to say about someone else he must have kept it to himself bc they never heard him speak ill of anyone. I wasn't raised that way, but there is no reason I can't be that way. It's an amazing concept that you can just keep your mouth shut instead of gossiping or complaining about other people. The Philly Rant actually took place at the PNC Bank Arts Center in NJ. I was there and it was the craziest live experience I've ever been a part of. The crowd boo'd every performer just for the sake of booing them, Bill stepped up and put the animals back in their cages.
@cooks37

Actually it didn't. He specifically said Dom Irrera was there and he was only at the show at Tweeter Center. Billy Burr also said that Jimmy Shubert went first and bombed horribly. Shubert was also only at the show at Tweeter Center. So I guess you weren't really there.

“I bring it up to him, and he doesn’t wanna talk about it”. That’s something I love about Burr. He is very humble and doesn’t like to hype himself up. Also he has stated how he really feels that what he did in Philly was unprofessional and doesn’t deserve the legend status it brought.

@Theomite; Philly (just like Boston) is a blue collar town with dreary winters. It makes people hard. We talk to older folks with respect but to each other, no such luck. Bill is a legend because he treated Philly like we treated him. NO RESPECT. In a weird way that’s how he earned respect. Complicated social constructs.

Had the privilege of seeing Bill Burr in Austin, Tx three weeks ago. He was telling a story about the day he found out about Bob's passing. For a very brief second, he got emotional. If you looked away, you might have missed it. He just bottled it up like he does and kept going, but it shows how close they really were.
@jnordne2

He's a lot more emotional than people give him credit for, but as you said, he bottles it up. I heard an interview where he talks about Charlie Murphy and how hard it was when he passed and he sounded like he was going to cry. He was really hurt by both Charlie and Patrice passing.

In his last special there is a part where you can see how having a kid changed him. Then he changes topic and rants about something else.
