I wouldn't even be born for nearly two decades when this was recorded, but I remember listening to a few Bob Seger albums on CD many times as a kid because he's my mom's all-time favorite musician. I can't listen to his music without thinking back to thousands of childhood memories of random evenings just after dinner when she would put some music on my dad's stereo system. Bob Seger, Guns n Roses, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the occasional Big & Rich song, and a mountain of others i can't evenbegin to list. They all remind me of simpler times and happy memories.

On a long and lonesome highway East of Omaha You can listen to the engine Moanin' out his one note song You can think about the woman Or the girl you knew the night before But your thoughts will soon be wandering The way they always do When you're ridin' sixteen hours And there's nothin' much to do And you don't feel much like ridin' You just wish the trip was through See here I am On the road again There I am Up on the stage Here I go Playin' star again There I go Turn the page Well you walk into a restaurant Strung out from the road And you feel the eyes upon you As you're shakin' off the cold You pretend it doesn't bother you But you just want to explode Most times you can't hear 'em talk Other times you can All the same old cliches "Is that a woman or a man?" And you always seem outnumbered You don't dare make a stand Here I am On the road again There I am Up on the stage Here I go Playin' star again There I go Turn the page Out there in the spotlight You're a million miles away Every ounce of energy You try to give away As the sweat pours out your body Like the music that you play Later in the evening As you lie awake in bed With the echoes from the amplifiers Ringin' in your head You smoke the day's last cigarette Rememberin' what she said Here I am On the road again There I am Up on the stage Here I go Playin' star again There I go Turn the page Here I am On the road again There I am Up on the stage Here I go Playin' star again There I go There I go Writer/s: Bob Seger

Studio versions for me, thanks. I don't like "live" recordings because so many times they are distorted and off-key as the performers take liberties with the material. Last night I listened to David Bowie's 1976 concert tour recording made at Uniondale, N.Y., March 23, 1976, and I thought it was pretty good, tolerating a slight amount of leeway that was taken with some songs, i.e. different intros; short, extra rifts, etc., until he and his band got to the final encore and they did Jean Genie, at least, I think it was Jean Genie. It was the lyrics to Jean Genie sung to a completely alien melody, it seemed. It was awful - off-key and out of synch throughout.

Generally I agree with you, however, with a song like this there is a very good chance that this studio version has never been heard by millions of people. But, everybody knows the song Turn The Page. In my 42 years on this rock I never heard this studio version until I met a complete Bob Seger freak - he owned a bar and he had the jukebox loaded with every Seger disc available - and he'd even play vinyl because Seger's catalog wasn't 100% transferred to CD.

Bob Seger's backing band in 1973 included Jamie Oldaker: drums, Sick Simms: keyboards, Marcy Levy, vocals, Sergio Pastora: percussion, TomCartmell: sax, and Seger himself on vocals and guitar. They backed him on Back In 72'. So it's likely Dick Simms on the piano. Seger didn't have these guys long. He only kept Tom Cartmell, who became Alto Reed. The rest were scooped up by Eric Clapton and became his backing band till 1980. Some of the tracks were recorded at Muscle Shoals. It's likely they played on some of the tracks. It's very confusing. Maybe if someone has an original copy of the album? I've seen the back cover of it posted on here before. I think it has a list of who played on the album. I do know that Pete Carr and Jimmy Johnson played guitar, Barry Beckett on piano, David Hood on bass, Roger Hawkins on drums, J.J. Cale made a guest appearance on guitar, on the song Seger covered, the Allman Brothers, Midnight Rider, which is also on the album, Early Seger Vol. 1. I own the CD version. It only has one song from Back In 72', the above mentioned one. Seger 1st started using Muscle Shoals on this album.
