I have a Christian Hedgewitshack drum as well and your style of playing really compliments the tone of this drum. He is an awesome drum maker. BASIC sometimes means better ❤️

After falling in love with the music of Scythian and We Banjo 3, I have decided to research how to play the bodhrán. Checking KZitem, I came across your videos first and have been mesmerized for the last 3 days! You are an excellent teacher with a sweet, helpful spirit and I am grateful to have found you! Knowing the brand of drum and tipper has helped in my research before purchasing, as I can hardly wait to do more than watch. What diameter is your Universal Coreline drum? 35, 38 or 40 cm? It is difficult to tell in the videos. Watching the videos on 'Christian' and 'Stevie' makes it easy to see why you love using their products and I want to make the most intelligent choices for my wish list. I just need to figure out HOW to order now, though I dread seeing what the euros will translate to in American currency! I hope you keep doing lots more videos because you are wonderfully engaging, a great player, AND an excellent teacher - a rare combination. Good health to you and I look forward to "playing along with you" soon!

Nicolle, thank you so much for your expert instructions. I recently bought a Waltons Tuneable Bodhran 16" Dark Mahogany which, not having it yet, I don't know if I did the right thing in getting this particular Bodhran. Just the same I look forward to following your great you tube instructions for some time to come. Again.......thanks!

Hi Allen, Thank you for your message! If you're starting, I think it's a good choice. Later on, you might want to move unto a higher quality bodhrán. I think you will know when you're ready tho! Thank you for your support. ^_^

Nicolle, most Bodhran’s I’ve seen have crossbars….mine came with cross straps (it was cheap). Do you recommend NOT to get crossbars? What is your feeling about them? I will eventually buy a better drum.

Hi Nicolle! I just started playing and I love your videos! I've been having trouble keeping my drum secure while I'm holding it. I can't move my hand on the back freely because the drum slips around if I don't hold it up a little with my hand. It's a kind of deep drum, which might be my problem, but I was wondering if you have any advice on how to hold it more securely.

Hi Anneke! Thank you for your question. So, that feel of the drum popping out from under you arm is normal! You are getting use to holding it and it can be very awkward at first! It's a little hard for me to help you because I can't see you holding the drum so I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. It could be that the drum is too deep, like you mentioned or It could other number of things: 1) The drum is not touching you side. You should be able to feel it pressing gently against your breast/ribs. 2) The drum might be touching your side but it may be placed too forwards. Make sure that the drum is snug back. It should not make you shoulder rise but it should be as far back as possible, while being comfortable. 3) Your drum is tilted too far out in a diagonal way, like 130 degrees. Make sure it's straight (better tilted inward than out tho). 4) You might not be putting enough pressure while holding it. If the pressure from your elbow against your ribs is too loose, it can make it difficult to have freedom of the arm and hand. 5) The placement of your drum on your leg might be too far out. Make sure your drum sits, more or less, in the middle of your thigh. I hope this helps! As I mentioned, it may be something else but it's hard to know without seeing you. Keep up the playing!!

thank you so much nicolle. your style of teaching is very easy to follow and i have learned a lot from your videos so far! I just recently got a bodhran and it has a wonderful sound. i like it a lot. it has a crossbar which makes it difficult to do the muting and stuff. I have searched youtube a bit for lesson on a bodhran with a crossbar but i cant find anything. still i love to play my lovely drum and i am getting better quickly! do you know of any teachers for the crossbar bodhran online, or can you recommend how to hold it to make the tonal sounds or the right method to play with the bar? thank you again sensei!! :D

Hello jsp jyc, thank you for your lovely message. If you love your drum, but the cross bar gets in the way, I recommend considering removing the crossbar. You can contact the maker of the drum and ask for tips on how to remove it. Some of my students have removed their crossbars without much difficulty. Of course, each drum is different so please be cautious if you do decide to remove it. Unfortunately I don't know any crossbar teachers. I hope this helped and I wish you good luck!

@@NicolleFigMusic thanks nicolle. I was just thinking about cutting it actually. I only thought about removing half of one bar, but i saw a vid of someone who removed a whole bar and just left one over the middle. I'll start with half and see how it goes :)

@@jspjyc7072 you can unscrew the screws as well so if you ever want to put them back, you can. Having one cross bar might still affect your tonal hand but it will definitely be a lot less! Good luck! :)

@@NicolleFigMusic they are stuck on with tiny nails, but never mind, i'll just go for it. the only reason i think i would want the crossbar is to make the circle remain round, and to keep her strong should she fall to the floor, but i will take extra care now! Thanks a bunch for the help. And thank you for your great videos. tikky tak boom bap! :D

Hola Nicolle!!!! (Is the dorsal spine centric in the playing surface? Can you compare the sounds between Corelines Universal and Bullet?). Gracias!!!!

Hola!
