They failed. Plain and simple. No leadership. However most officers aren’t trained in active shooter scenarios. Only specialized units and swat are. Most police officers if lucky receive one 4 hr training on active shooters. That’s it.. This is why a strong leader who knows what they’re doing & clear information is essential at these scenes. Police are taught to be part of a team & take orders from the senior officer on scene. There was failure on so many levels in this tragedy, but particularly from the top down. But it was NOT about cops protecting their own lives over kids. Arrodondo needs to be fired! And yes there needs to be change in this police department, with multi departmental training exercises. But although people are baying for their blood, most of these officers do not need to be fired, because they will NEVER let anything like this happen again. They now have the bitter experience of having been part of a catastrophic failure that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. But that is sadly, invaluable experience that, if they survive this, will make them better officers who will never let failure of a command structure, nor an incorrect classification of an active shooter situation ever happen again anywhere that they are. And many of these officers will also take that hard-earned experience & ensure it is spread across the country as well. Although I have no doubt every single officer wishes they could have this day over again to do it completely differently, what is more valuable? An officer who has read about something like this in a textbook or heard about it at training school, or someone who has lived through it? Both the hell of the day & the horrific aftermath.

Eventually some others arrived who did push in and take the shooter down. It could have been done much earlier, and especially after the second burst of gunfire. The first burst occurred either just before or just as officers entered the hallway where the gunman had the kids in two adjoining classrooms. Officers were in place and heard the second. That is why they were saying take cover and backing up in the hallway. There were also 911 calls coming from the kids still alive after the first burst -- and may be the second burst, too, -- asking for help. I understand that in the in-school video released of officers standing in the hallway, the techs erased the voices of the children screaming and we only hear the gunfire -- erased their voices because it would be too much for the parents to take. How could you stand there, not just as a police officer but as a human being, and not rush to open those doors? Perhaps not immediately but sometime into the waiting in the hallway, shields and and other equipment was brought that could have knocked down a door. The officers who finally took down the gunman just opened the door, no key or special equipment needed. The others during the more than an hour when the gunman had free rein may have excuses for why they did not rush in -- and even arrested one officer whose wife was a teacher in the room, and he wanted to go in. They took his gun. I think that happened outside and he did not actually get into the hallway. His wife died.

In this newly released report we now know that near 400 officers from over 20 different state and federal agencies responded to this active shooter incident, yet no one breached the classroom doors or windows to neutralize the suspect until after he had shot and killed dozens of children while they waited in the hallway for well over 1 hour. This is dereliction of duty on the largest scale ever seen in US history. The level of incompetence of leadership is mind-boggling, the height of cowardice is incomprehensible as the report states that officers put their safety above the lives of those they were sworn to protect, thus they contributed to the murders of these children and teachers.
