Andy Hammer, a name couldn't be more appropriate for the flight test manager!! Jokes apart, I have a tremendous respect and admiration for these people; their work is actually priceless; whenever I get on one of those flying machines I think about the huge amount of work, passion, challenges and commitment behind it. Personally I love both Boeing and Airbus but, to be honest, the sexiest, coolest and most iconic aircraft ever is and will always be the 747.

Noob question: would it be possible/practical/smart to have a runway set up with a way to flood it with a foot or two of water to assist in crash landings? Would it slow a plane down enough, or too much, or just complicate things?

@PangeaSpreads You're wrong A380 is new technology, a very quiet aircraft for ultra long range flights in economy configuration A380 can carry 800 plus passengers also A380 is more economical than the 747-8.

@6aNapoleon

+Snowy Pantha Using "ocean water" water may be better for the planet, but there are few worse things for an airframe than salt water. Can you spell "corrosion?"
@snowypantha
8 жыл бұрын
Corrosion ! Okay it's bad for a plane but this plane has been created for test, and i am sure that it doesn't fly after.
@6aNapoleon
8 жыл бұрын
That is not always the case. One or two airframes may be set aside for destructive testing, for example, to load a wing until it snaps. Those airframes are usually not intended for flight use at all. But some test aircraft are in fact delivered to customers and continue in service.

Okay, let's consider your logic... Lets take your analouge and make it represent all jet engines everywhere in the world. When you factor in the overall volume of the atmosphere for the entire planet, you are talking about something akin to heating an entire city with one hair dryer. The atmosphere dissipates the heat before any real thermal effect. Please inform yourself.

why is water not allowed in the engines as rain gets in the engines with usually no effect
@jetenginestar

kzitem.info/news/bejne/moKXuYZvcIyZm5gm8s In this 777 documentary, it says that "If water stayed in some of the crevices of the control surfaces, it could freeze and jam the controls."
@brandonl8039
9 жыл бұрын
Michael Flatman Likely because its ground water that has rocks dirt and all sort of crap in it that could cause real damage to the engine, now rain which is just pure water wont cause such issues.
@MichaelFlatman
9 жыл бұрын
jetenginestar oh yeah that A320 that had a frozen AOA sensor and the water wont do any good
@whousley
9 жыл бұрын
Michael Flatman It might also be and issue of quantity. Also, they probably have safety regs as to how much rainfall (and rain water in the engines) is unsafe at take-off but ok while in flight.
@Airbii
9 жыл бұрын
Michael Flatman I think they are also doing the aquaplaning tests. When an aircraft or even any other vehicle runs over a stream of standing water, the water forms a film around the tires, causing difficulties in ground control and loss of brake effectiveness. That is why runways have cut lines on them, so that water can spread through these lines without making a layer over the surface. Keep in mind one fact though, someone has to test whether the engines can handle water, right?
