What a horrible way to die, eyes burning from smoke, unable to see the controls, panic and anger setting in from the difficult communications. And still, the copilot almost managed to save the plane. Thanks again, for a superb job.
@michaelmoorrees3585

When you take a package to the post office, they'll ask if it contains lithium batteries, because most mail goes by air, inside commercial airliners. If it does have those batteries, it can only go by Parcel Select, which means by truck. Also there are two types of lithium batteries. Two completely different technologies. The safe ones are the coin cell types that are in your key fobs, such as the CR2025. These have low energy density, so when shorted, they die quickly, and barely heat up. The dangerous ones, are the main batteries in your cell phones and laptop computers. Those are lithium ion. The danger is due to their very high energy density. Close to the energy density of explosives. Short out the battery in your cell phone, and it will catch fire inside a minute, and its next to impossible to put out. There are youtube videos about this.

I hope that now cargo planes keep the emergency portable oxigen closer to the pilot's seat. and, In case of real fire emergency, pilots land that plane sooner, forget the airport, get the best spot near the farm or highway. fires do not wait.
@raylopez99
5 жыл бұрын
Not really. Notice pilot error in setting autopilot to 190 rather than 90 for the heading, and coming in too fast and high was the immediate cause of the crash. Further, manual control was lost due to the fire and that's why they crashed, they took the plane off autopilot. Trying to land in a farm or highway would have been disastrous.

@@raylopez99 Aren't the ATC suggested a closer airport at Doha when alerted about the fire emergency? If the captain go there instead of back to Dubai, when they land they may not have missed control for landing gears, there will probably be less blinding smoke in the cockpit, and the captain may not need to fetch the portable oxygen when they land. Now if the flight crews choose to fly south to somewhere near the coast and ditch in the water (somewhere less than 50 miles), they may still have full control of their instruments and actually survive.
@dheyes803

Since the flight was under 10K, couldn’t the side windscreens have been opened? This could have cleared the smoke on the flight deck and may not have let in enough oxygen to further feed the fire. (I’m not a pilot but sometimes answers to complex issues come from unexpected sources).

OK so I now realize my addiction to these mishap review and analysis capsule videos have taken their toll... Just returned from a short two day travel period for the Thanksgiving Holidays and let me tell you, flying to my destination and back my mind was racing, if not perseverating, upon all the things that could go wrong. Sitting stuck in the back of the craft with 135 completely unknowing, unaware, and aviation illiterate souls frightened the bejeezus out of me because there is nothing you can do, one is utterly helpless and has to wholly depend on the wellbeing, competence, and good will of total strangers from contractors, to potentially aggrieved union members, to possibly disgruntled supervisory staff, and to the ideally stone sober pilots. On can only sit and feel every subtle vibration, palpate every mechanical and electronic device within reach, listening to every cyclic, rotational, mechanical, and errant noise, smell every wafting odor wondering if it that was the trace early scent of an electrical fire, hydraulics leak, or fuel spill. Sometimes it really is possible to know too much...

I had tears in my eyes as I watched this because I figured these men had no chance. The first officer flying that plane, should have been awarded some kind of posthumous award for guiding that plane long enough so that it did not hit any populated areas! I feel very sorry for those poor men who died. I feel sorry for their families and friends. When I watched the simulation of this accident, and saw the possibility of them landing on the population--I say that these men were unsung heroes. It takes courage to continue to fly a craft under such outrageous conditions--suffering--knowing your co-worker and captain could be dead at your side--and to not give up. My prayers are for all pilots tonight who do their best despite everything--and things go wrong. Please God in heaven, bless those pilots who are hauling dangerous cargo unknown as they fly in Your skies tonight, and Your Guardian Angels watch over all those passengers and crew as well. Help those maintenance people, to do their best every day, every hour, let them not feel that anything they do is unimportant. Please bless those ATC personnel who watch their scopes and maintain those radios and radars--help them to be ever watchful, at their best keeping air traffic as safe as they can while they route those planes. God bless the many human angels in planes who assist those in need with relay communications and keep safe those first responders who have the hardest job when things go not as planned. Thank you Lord, Amen." RIP those who gave their lives to others easier here on earth.

They should not have turned back to dubai. That was their biggest mistake. If Bahrain airport was nearest and there was an emergency - they should've went there. Captain error. Sad tragedy.

It's like when you're driving on the interstate and have to poop really bad. Do you go to the closest gas station and risk it being gross? Or do you drive an extra exit to a gas station you know is nice and clean and you've been there many times?

@@MR-to8jn Lithium must be related chemically to Sodium and Potassium (all lethal metals to have in plane's cargo hold). See "Valujet/Everglades" for details of the DC9 crash caused by a fire in the hold that destroyed the plane's controls.

Yeah, those batteries burn super hot and explosively, that plane was getting gutted from the inside by what must have been a massive inferno. It's amazing it stayed in the air as long as it did.
@None-zc5vg

Metals like sodium and lithium are chemically-similar and are very reactive, even with water: since pilots are educated people, they'd be aware of the risk involved in carrying such materials as bulk cargo, so why wouldn't they either refuse to carry them or get someone on board who would be ready and able to deal with any emergency-situation that such hazardous, incendiary materials could create. In this case, UPS apparently wouldn't go to the expense of employing an extra crew-member to keep an eye on the cargo-hold.

This is so sad, two guys doing their job, tragically killed, one question which puzzles me is why the fire wasn’t contained when the first officer initiated the fire suppression and de pressurised the cargo area to stifle the flames, why did this not have the desired effect, instead of allowing the fire to spread eventually overwhelming the aircraft?.
@Killerpixel11

Have you seen what fire departments have to do in order to extinguish burning electric cars? They literally have to fully submerge them in water containers for the fire to go out and most importantly stay out. The fire system probably put it out very briefly and then it reignited, if it was ever fully out in the first place.

I wonder what the Captain's logic was in choosing to head back to Dubai instead of landing in nearby Doha? He tells the Bahrain controller there's an emergency and they have to get on the ground immediately, but then takes a longer route.
