Brian May said: “I didn’t know Mike Myers,” he says, “but he rang me up out of the blue and said, ‘We’ve done this amazing sequence in our new film-can we have your approval?’ ” At Myers’ request, May took the segment to singer Freddie Mercury, who was then near the end of his life. (Mercury died of pneumonia resulting from AIDS in 1991.) “I took it around to Freddie, who was not in a good state at that time,” May says. “He was..confined to his bed, but I took it round and played it to him and he loved it. “Strangely enough, the humor in it was quite close to our own. Because we did that kind of thing in the car, bouncing up and down to our own tracks!” The song’s appearance in the movie revived it and sent it on a second run into the music charts and helped Queen launch a comeback in the U.S. in the years following Mercury’s death. “There’s a huge irony there,” May says, “because there was a time when we completely owned America and we would tour there every year. It seemed like we couldn’t go wrong. And then we lost America for various reasons, which are now history. “Freddie had a very dark sense of humor. And he used to say, ‘I suppose I’ll have to die before we get America back.’ And, in a sense, that was what happened. And it was Wayne’s World-which came completely out of nowhere-that made it happen.” - from: www.guitarworld.com

@@wickedwitchoftheeast88 Listen. Do a little *fact checking* first. These are all the facts you'll ever need. 1. According to the Imdb the filming dates of Wayne's World was 2 August 1991 - 24 September 1991. The movie made its world premiere on the 14th of February 1992. The British premiere wasn't until the 22nd of May 1992. 2. Freddie Mercury died on the 24th of November 1991. But NOBODY except his closest friends knew he was dying from AIDS until the 23rd of November when it was revealed to the world. Please look it up and learn something. "it when Freddie Mercury was alive so they probs showed him to get his blessin" Wild speculation. No facts. Again, HOW did the movie makers know Freddie Mercury was DYING when NOBODY except his closest friends knew it the DAY before he DIED?? What's wrong with you? Any incredible story and you just ALL eat it up without any questions because it sounds good?? Idiots.

@@McLarenMercedes Yes that is true the Freddie's management didn't confirm his illness until the 22nd November, but the media had been reporting about his illness for years before he confirmed it. The media even published photo's of Aids doctor visiting him, plus with his last public appearance at the 11th Brit Awards in Feb 1990, it was all but confirmed he was fighting a bad illness. With you being so knowledgeable I presume you do know that Wayne's World started filming on 2 August 1991 and finished filming on 24 September 1991, almost two months before Freddie died? Brian May said Mike Myers sent him a clip of the headbanging scene to get the bands approval. Brian said he showed Freddie, who was basically on his death bed, and he gave his blessing. So I guess its your word against Brian's.
@wickedwitchoftheeast88

@@McLarenMercedesDo some fact checking yourself first. There's an interview with Brian May where he says that someone working on the film (I'm not sure who as interview was a while ago) phoned him and explained about the scene and sent him a copy. Brian May took it round to Freddie Mercury who thought it was funny and let them use it. In fact when Boheiman Rhapsody was re-released and clips of Wayne's World was added into the original music video Mike Myers was horrified and said "they've pissed on a Picasso!" He then wrote to Queen saying he had nothing to do with that and apologised and they replied with "Thank you for using our song" go look it up and do some actual fact checking there's interviews with both Brian May and Mike Myers saying as much. Or is their word not good enough for your superior knowledge of the "facts" 🙄 Secondly where did I say in my comment that the public knew Freddie Mercury was dying? I didn't say no such thing. So get the fuck down off your high horse and don't put words in my mouth that I never even said. And next time you want to try and be clever please read the fucking comment properly! And it was so funny because we were all on our way to Fantasy Convention, some of us in full LARP gear (among them a barbarian with a pelt around his shoulders). On top of that, since the driver is a gardener, he had some of his tools scattered around in the car, among them a hedge trimmer on the backlite shelf ... it must have been a very strange encounter for that family, they couldn't stop staring at us and their kid was jumping up and down in joy :) That was more than 20 years ago, sigh.

I watched Wayne's World for the first time a few weeks ago on Netflix. Freaked out when I saw that the Bohemian Rhapsody seen. They were driving around my old neighborhood. Must've shot that scene literally a few weeks after we moved in, when I was 5. Recognized everything in the background, from the old Woolworths, which is a Footlocker now, to the place where I sued to get my haircuts, to the Gap and Payless which I still frequent on occasion.

We had a great time that night and what I didn't know at the time was it was his idea to go see it so my sister could set up the house for my surprise birthday party later that night! This was also the first time I ever heard Bohemian Rhapsody we laughed so hard at this scene and the following Monday at school we sang it all day! Its been 24yrs since he has been gone and I miss his goofy laugh and his jokes but I will never forget the fun that was had on February 15th 1992.
